I've been reading the books, and I don't know if it's the translation, but they seem a lot less grimdark than the games do. They language and mannerisms of the characters is a bit more jolly I guess? The world they inhabit is much more naive fantasy than the grubby world of the games. Most of the stories in the first book are just Dandelion and Geralt fucking around and throwing insults about.

If Netflix were to do a departure from the games, it'd be cool to see them go for a more jolly sort of adventure fantasy with flashes of dark and horror to spice it up. I can't imagine the world needs another "Game of Thrones but..." series. And the old school fantasy is in the book's DNA.

The games kinda focus on what happens when shit gets out of hand- in the first one, you try to track a murderhobo wizard who stole all your special shit and wind up in the middle of a war between zealots and nonhumans, then in the second it's nations clashing before a what amounts to a world war kicks off, and in the third it's pretty much a world war.

There are still moments that are like the books- the Bloody Baron and the Crones would fit right in, Toussaint would minus the Night of Long Fangs, a lot of the village contracts could be straight out of a novella- but the backdrop is pretty different.

If you search the villager's huts, they're filled with pieces of finery that easily suggest they've got the gold (in fact do have it given what you can loot from them) to pay him. They tried to cheat a witcher while he was weakened after taking down what is arguably the most dangerous thing to inhabit a forest.

Also if you didn't know the game was released in 17 languages and every single one sounds unique trying to resemble their own accents and dialects. If you actually played the game in Polish the accents aren't Scottish/Irish/English at all. The translations also didn't make much sense at all. They all sound very Eastern European and use many terms that don't even exist in English.

Redania is painfully Polish and Novigrad has even copied famous buildings from famous Polish cities like the port crane "Żuraw".
I think the only truly Westernized place in Witcher 3 is Toussaint but that's French theme.

Blood and Wine is all over the place in terms of myths and legends. The setting is obviously French but things like Lady of the Lake or the fantasy land created by the mage that takes from so many different fairy tales obviously shows that guys at CDPR simply had fun with this one and went all over the place when it comes to references - I even found an Asterix and Obelix reference with the A38 permit.

That's a good point. Part of the appeal is (usually) serious main characters, but in a slightly surreal world, meeting occassionally bizarre people. I worry that is far too subtle for a tv producer.

My suspicion is that this is only getting made because Netflix wants a Game of Thrones of it's own, and cast about for an fantasy medieval IP that already had fans, which would of course lead to the Witcher. That said, other channels/production companies have had similar motives and produced at least half decent shows, like the History Channel with Vikings or the BBC with The Last Kingdom, so maybe they'll do fine with it.

But those shows both follow the GoT formula quite closely.
