It annoys me that injecting artificial diversity is higher on their priority list than making a good adaptation of the source material. But I can live with it, as long as the actor is a good match for the character aside from being the wrong ethnicity. Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin and Lawrence Fishburne as Perry White are good examples.

This Spider-Man movie just made up its own characters and then named them after characters from the comics that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

I guess it depends on how it's done. In Homecoming, an all-white cast doesn't make sense for a high school in Queens. The characters aren't really defined by their race. There's no character where it's like "he's the black one" or "he's the Asian one." They actually have personalities and roles that define them. I'd say Homecoming did a really good job with it.

I'm genuinely curious if "significant" diversity has a negative impact on a film's success.

I would guess people want to watch characters they can more easily identify with. Of course the annoying thing about "diversity" is that you have to take away white representation to increase non-white representation.

If the left concedes that a lack of representation is negative for non-whites, then they shouldn't have much issue acknowledging that decreased representation for whites could be perceived negatively by whites.

There are polls where people are asked how much of the population is gay and most people answered they believed about a quarter of the population was gay when in reality it's more like 1 or 3 percent.
