I have only watched the movie once perhaps, but I've listened to Bernstein's 1984 "operatic version" countless times so maybe that's coloring my perception. It is a masterpiece, and it's how he intended the music to be played, I think that if you listen to this your estimation of the music would go way up.

American and Cool are GOAT of course, but so are Maria and Tonight.

And the second tier is merely great songs like Jet Song, Something's Coming, Krupke (dropped from lots of productions for being nonessential), The Rumble.

If you are interested in hearing it at its best, listen to the recording I mentioned, plus you could watch a nice documentary about the making of it (there was some interesting friction between Bernstein and the performers, including the opera singers he got).
