>Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming is estimated to file $47.4M in weekend 2 which is lower than the industry expected, but its 60% slide is on par with the second weekend declines of Amazing Spider-Man 2 (-61%) and Spider-Man 3 (-62%).
http://deadline.com/2017/07/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes-spiderman-homecoming-box-office-weekend-1202128838/

>Make movie of Spider-Man, Marvel's most popular character.
>Add in RDJ, Marvel's biggest actor and only way MCU films can hit $1bil.
>Connect Spider-Man to the MCU, one of the world's biggest franchises.
>Have paid shills give your movie rave reviews and talk about it 24/7 weeks up to release.
>Open significantly lower than you hope.
>Suffer one of the biggest second week drops in MCU franchise history.
>Likely end lower than BvS and SS domestically, which you spent the better part of the year trashing but still made tons of money.

AHAHA Not even $50mil/movie RDJ can save this movie. "Easy $1bil" GotG2 can't even pass BvS worldwide and is going to get BTFOed by WW who will be Queen of the Summer. SM+IM is likely going to end below BvS and SS domestically. DC's probably going to win another Oscar with WW.

The MCU is dead. Bury it. Consider this mercy.

This movie has Spider-Man and Iron Man and opened $10mil over Wonder Woman. By the end of the second weekend it'll already be behind Wonder Woman. Holy shit. Who knew a solid +1 years of Mouseketeer shitposting would come back to bite them this hard. Karma is real.
>>
>>84979168

Mousecucks and critics. It literally at "93%" only slightly lower than War for the planet of the apes(yes I know the average rating is even lower).

Almost every one of the said the same thing "it's fun and exciting". Nothing about the visuals or editing or cinematography or score.

But watch as next when critics point out every minute flaw in Dunkirk or valerian and give it a negative rating for things they normally straight up ignore in Marvel crap. The audience seems to have less of a pleb taste than critics.
>>
How much is this money goes to Sony?
>>
>>84979813

Almost all of it.
>>
>>84979700
Valerian is literally candy CGI the movie. Dunkirk will get 100% guaranteed.
>>
I saw it, i liked it. On a different but related note, I was looking at some info about Homecoming, and IMDB mentioned that Wilson Fisk, Mister Hyde, and Frank Castle have all been mentioned in the MCU, but i must have missed these references, could someone help me out?
>>
>>84979945

And most MCU films don't even have that. The only thing I would give it an edge is in dialogue.

And Dunkirk will probably settle around high to low 80s because critics as of late have become experts at nitpicking his films.

>“The naysayers and dubious moviegoers reflect overtones of franchise fatigue and ‘what makes this one new?’ There are even bizarre references to racism and comparisons to today’s political and social spectrum,” points out Relish Mix. The social media monitor further adds, “Warhas a real problem with its cast. There really is no social star, although all credit to Andy Serkis for sharing on his Twitter feed and doing a massive amount of PR/interviews for the campaign. Woody Harrelson, the one name the film boasts, is not activated on his Facebook page. Steve Zahn is not activated. And the rest of the cast that is activated is minuscule (1.5M all in).”

critique when concerning other movies

Probably because of the terrible advertising that made the movie look, well, like a Sony movie. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Sony really was in charge of the advertising.

>>84980146
Deadline is obsessed with Social Media as the true face of advertising now. If it doesn't have social media presence among the cast, they use that as the reason a movie bombs each time.

>>84978796
I liked it but I don't think there was enough hype and good marketing. People glaze over a bit with spiderman because it's been done so many times and the trailers weren't 'epic' enough or 'hilariously quippy enough'. It was a tough sell.
It seemed closer to antman in it's vibe even though spiderman's such a big hitter. Better than antman though but didn't feel very big and not like the 'mustsee movie of the summer' like some of the other marvel films

His brand is also oversaturated. The only way people can make it more interesting is if they focused more on his villains but the MCU couldn't create a great villain to save it's life.

This is why Bats has remained quite powerful despite his ups and downs. If he becomes stale his villains can carry a film by themselves like in TDKR and to some extent TDK(even of it is shittily made like SS).

Let's be real, the entire MCU has been on a downward decline since Phase 2. People are getting really tired of all the interlinked movies. Hell, huge numbers of my personal Social Circle have given up on them because they're so interconnected.

People want an actual full movie. Not trailers for the future that detract from the main movie and leads to Amazing Spider-Man 2 clusterfucks.

Is anyone really surprised? It was marketed basically as Iron Man 4 with a guest cameo Peter Parker.

For a long time, Civil War had the same type of marketing. Where they played up RDJ even more than the main lead of the movie.

Once RDJ leaves after infinity War the MCU is going to tank. It'll survive but will be nowhere near what it's at.

I disagree. I legit like RDJ, but I also believe that he and Favreau are subtly sabotaging the MCU for being such massive sell-outs.

I freely admit this is headcanon, but it seems to me that they wanted to explore the whole "Demon in a bottle" aspect of Tony's character. There could be no one finer for that than RDJ, and it might even be cathartic for him, but Iron Man 2 appears to start down that path and then do a not-so-subtle 180 and it's never been mentioned since. Know what happened mid-production of Iron Man 2? The Disney deal was finalized.

If that's true, then RDJ has been slyly crippling the enterprise for being nutless wonders and holding their feet to the fire with the indisputable fact that "Hollywood Showman of the Year" Feige notwithstanding, it was RDJ that put wheels on the gravy train.

Iron Man 1 was a fluke they made basically ad libbing the script and telling the producers to fuck off between RDJ, Bridges and Favreu. The rest of the Phase 1 movies were shit and flopped. After that they just copied that plot structure and that character, both found by chance, into what has come to be known as "the formula".

This is not "superhero fatigue". This is MCU fatigue. Logan did great, GotG2 did great (it's MCU but not as formulaic) and WW did great. This is the only capeshit underperforming. And it's because it's derivative shit that we have already seen 14 times. Say what you want about BvS, that same movie, everything just the same, with Spider-Man and Iron Man instead of the DC characters, introducing Carol instead of WW, would do MUCH better than the original BvS and much much better than this piece of shit,
>>
>>84982305
Anyone can get behind Spider-Man at its core. The problem is the people that own the property. The comics have been shit for 10 years outside of random supplementary runs, the last good animated show had an off-putting style to most and died at its peak due to the buyout by Disney. With the movies, you have ASM and ASM2 in recent memory serving as some of the worst flicks of the genre, period. There's an initial buzz for casual moviegoers when it comes to Homecoming. It's good a connection to Marvel flicks, and that's enough for them. But I think that it's too alien to actual fans, and while a decent movie in its own right, there's better stuff to watch in theaters right now. People love Spider-Man. People want the franchise doing well on any given medium, but nobody in charge knows what to do with the character without changing him to where he's unrecognizable.

Quesada's damage to the comicbook brand lingers to this day, perpetuated by Slott. In the movies, Sony's damage to the brand has forced the hands of every creator involved. It's a bad time to be a Spider-Man fan.

I watched a camrip but trying to be as unbiased as possible:
a) It starts at a point in which PP is already Spiderman, which is fine since people will get tired of getting told the same story thousands of times, but the fact is that his origins are unclear. Uncle Ben is never mentioned anywhere, so what are his motivations? His whole character is unclear because they tried to change so much of the formula. Was this explained in the other movie he was in? I don't know because I don't follow closely the MCU.
b) Instead of trying to be a good, conclusive movie focused on Spiderman, it spends half the movie trying to tie it in with the MCU. This is incredibly backwards. What you want to do is to create an engaging character, and then tie it in with the rest of engaging characters that form part of the universe. In this movie they assumed Spiderman was already engaging and cool so from the get-go they tried to shoehorn him with the rest of the universe, despite the fact that this is the less interesting Spiderman in the history of Spiderman movies, with Garfield at least they bothered to shot his origins so it was an actual character (I think Holland is fine as an actor though).
c) The plot never has any gravity to it. You never feel Spider-man is making sacrifices and being a hero. Aunt May is fine, doesn't have economical problems, and apparently Ben didn't exist and die in this universe.
He doesn't choose being a hero over his social life. MJ already likes him, plenty of people are nice to him -included the girl he likes- he skims on the contest because he had to do Spider-man stuff but they won the contest so it never feels like he made any sacrifice to begin with. And if shit goes wrong you know Tony Stark is here to bail him out whch takes out all the stress.

I'd say the worst part is that they tried to make a fun, quippy movie with no stakes and tension at all, and that's antiethic to Spiderman in my opinion.
>>
>>84986962

Suicide squad had very effective marketing before it came out and then even the film was like one long trailer. I don't think they could do as well with a sequel
>>
>>84987017
To add more since post limit:
a) The motivation you extract from the movie is that he wants to be a Avenger and be cool. This is a valid motivation, but this doesn't make him endearing.
The point of Spiderman is reponsibility, changing it to "I want to be a cool superhero" is replacing the character completely.
b) The most glaring consequence of this is that Iron-Man is more engaging to watch in the movie than Spider-man himself.

>What you want to do is to create an engaging character, and then tie it in with the rest of engaging characters that form part of the universe.
This exactly, and that's what Marvel did in Phase I and why people shit on Hawkeye so much at the time of Avengers 1, he was the only one not to have his own story and the forced romance with Widow was cheap. Widow sucked too but she had been in IM2 at least. Then in Phase II we got Winter Soldier all fleshed out and expansions on Thor, Cap and Iron Man. For Phase III Ant-Man had a very solid debut.
But lately all of these Marvel movies have been boring because they start off with SHIELD shenanigans right away, versus a 2 minute Nick Fury cameo at the end. Spider Man is the worst offender because Marvel skipped the origin and decided against giving any real character in place of it, instead filling the time with Iron Man.

>You never feel Spider-man is making sacrifices and being a hero.
this is honestly the thing I think that makes Spiderman special and why I think Spider Man 2 is the best. Being a hero is not easy, you have to make sacrifices to your own life. Most superhero movies are like billionaires or demigods or aliens so this doesnt apply to them but Peter is just a normal guy from Queens who is also Spiderman. So when you see things like him only having 20 dollars to pay rent and deciding to fight crime later that night instead of getting another part time job, you really see what it means to be a hero. When Peter struggles to even go to class on time and gets so frustrated he throws away the suit for a moment. Moments like these is what makes him a hero.

it's not sony, it's just franchise fatigue. There's always a drop when the previous movie sucks. Doesn't matter if the current one is good, the interest isn't there. ASM2 sucked, doesn't matter this is not connected, the last spider-man was no good, why would people go see the next one? It happened with star trek, x-men, james bond. People lose interest. Pete can win a Flash like that over by proving that whatever he seems to lack in brawn, he makes up for in pure heart. Pete can help that Flash, help him maybe pass some exams, stay on the football team, get a good scholarship, get some education and lift himself up. They can have a genuine heartfelt friendship that grows over the course of a couple of movies.

Rich dickhead that's almost as smart as Parker and jealous of him for it? Pete can do nothing for that guy he can't already do for himself. What's the best Pete can realistically do, help him get into a *slightly* more prestigious school? Be still, my fucking heart.

It was a dumb as fuck decision. The only thing they could possibly do to rectify it is have "Flash" and his family lose all their money. But even then, it just doesn't have that same "working class heroes" vibe.

The Disney buyout prevented them from going down a darker more somber path. I agree, it would have been perfect for RDJ. Remember, Disney found a formula and will smother it into the ground.

It's one reason I'm frankly terrified for the remainder of the Star Wars Anthology movies. They need to be bold and different.

This seems like you didint feel anything for the character. Some key things you need to remember Spiderman is only 15 being a super hero is really cool for a q5 year old. He did make lots of choices sacrificing social life. Literally cockblocks himself everytime. He is a kid growing up dealing with social problems at school and throughout this movie he learns that he needs to be responsible. The atm fight had consequences the guys deli he goes to got destroyed. There was weight to that also a good reason why he wants to go after the people who designed the weapon. Also he sacrificed his possible relationship to stop the bad guy. Plus that car ride scene was intense.

After Kathleen Kennedy was revealed to be a huge micromanager, any hope for a viable Star Wars franchise is pretty much moot after episode 9.

Nintendo market value passed Sony. People think it's normal it's just competition and all that shit but it's really not. Nintendo is a small toys company of 5000 employes that can't even release their products worldwide and that isn't doing particularly well. Sony is an electronic giant of 130 000 employes that tried hard to take a monopoly on the videogames market but never really succeeded to reach their goal. And now no one believe in anymore. Right now they're dominating the consoles market but it cost them shittons of money compared to the profit. No one believe in the console market anymore. Sony is fighting its biggest fight for a dying market agains't a dwarf and Microsoft who is just here to piss them off and push them to spend billion.

I don't care if it makes sense, it's not the character.
Spider-man is an already built persona, you can change stuff about it, but if you change the very core of it it becomes a different character altogether.
In the movie he fights crime because ultimately he wants to be accepted into the avengers. Everything he does is because he wants to prove to Tony Stark that he's a big boy. That goes against the main characteristic of Spider-man. Spider-man is a character ruled by responsibility, he fights crime not because he wants status or money, but because he has a trauma derived from the death of his uncle Ben.
You can't just replace this motivation with "I want to be a cool avenger" and sell it like the same character, it isn't. You changed the most important part of what makes Spiderman Spiderman. It just doesn't work.

And the sacrifices are underwhelming. The only reason where you could say he cockblocks himself is when he doesn't show up at the party as Spiderman, but that doesn't work because the consequences weren't there: the girl was nice afterwards and didn't care because he didn't think it was going to happen anyway. The rest of those are the same.
>He is a kid growing up dealing with social problems
He has no social problems, a poo in loo faggot that everyone hates calls him Penis Parker, so what? He's respected by everyone else, a girl is in love with him and the girl he likes is nice to him all the time. You could pick a random guy on this website and he'd have a more fucked up social life than him.
>The atm fight had consequences the guys deli he goes to got destroyed.
So, the only real consequence in the movie is that he doesn't get to eat tacos, this right here is my point.

As someone who's seen it, Holland is a solid young Spidey and a pretty decent Peter Parker, though I still prefer Tugboat's Pete. Keaton is possibly the best villain the MCU has ever had, and RDJ is RDJ.

That's where my praise ends. The dialogue is sanctimonious and preachy. The CGI is just really, really sub-par and rubbery a lot of the time and Spidey's jumps all feel oddly sped-up, like he falls faster than is physically possible after a jump. And above all else - they absolutely massacred everything that's supposed to be at the heart of Pete's character. Nobody should ever be suggesting to Pete what his role in the world is. That shit is fucking his, not his Uncle's, and for damn sure not Tony Fucking Stark.

He becomes responsible through out the movie he was fighting crime before tony stark waved around the "Avengers Status" plus he wanted to be an avenger so he could do more but his opinion changes as the movie plays through he literally declines tonys offer. After the car ride he decides to take out the bad guy instead of going to the dance with the girl he likes which is a big sacrifice considering hes does this multible times. The movie builds on that foundation of uncle bens saying as it plays without even mentioning the character.
>>
Sales aren't a good measure of how good a movie is because people see a movie based on interest not based on how good it is. Because they won't know yet. So people are losing interest in capeshit.

Not surprising when taking your kids to see these movies is getting less and less appealing. I saw spiderman the other day and was thinking how I wouldn't bring my kids to see it because of all the retarded degeneracy.

MCU has been on a downwards projectory ever since it peaked with Iron Man 3. Civil War fell a whole half a billion from Avengers. This despite the presence of Spidey to boost it. Their origin stories have all been mediocre performers at the BO with the exception of Guardians, which operates outside of the MCU really.

Kevin Feige has a problem where he's saturated the market by shitting out three Marvels a year to the point where people are dying to se something else.

I don't remember and know because since the very first second of the movie you have RDJ ugly visage butting his nose in a movie that's not his.
> plus he wanted to be an avenger so he could do more
No, he wants to be an avenger because in the MCU being an avenger is the same as being a Hollywood star.

Yes, in the end he doesn't become an avenger because that would be too soon, but that doesn't fix his initial motivations. We still don't know from where his character comes.
We can't just pretend uncle Ben happened and everything happened as always because there's not a single mention of it, uncle Ben is a monumental figure in the life of Parker and May, it should have more presence, if not in Peter, in May.
In the end the movie is just to happy. I'm not saying it should be a tragedy, but the origins of Spiderman are miserable, and they condition his whole heroic persona. This movie makes it seem like Peter is just a normal guy with a normal life that won the lottery. Even

I messed up and sent before time.
[...] Even if he sacrifices his social life to be a hero out of responsibility it's not clear why. Why does he have this sense of responsibility? You just don't know because they skimmed over it.
I'm not saying I'd prefer them to explain the same story once again, but just acknowledge it, show a picture of uncle Ben, show footage of May and Peter moping at the funeral. Something to know it actually happened and you can asume the canon Spiderman origin apply here. Right now not only you do know, everything points to it being retconned out of existence because everything is simply too happy.
