Well though that is something presented by the film, I don't think that is the main message that is trying to be conveyed. Thought that does contribute to the main message, I think that it's more about how you don't have to conform to society's views on love, as David really does love his wife even though they don't really have any traits that they share, and he even loves her through the time spent with the loners. He did whatever he could to be with his wife, even though it wouldn't have been accepted by the people around them.
