Ordinarily, people make threads when they have a funny idea, or an interesting insight, or thought of a good troll.
But once you start making generals, people start making threads because "there isn't a thread up." By definition the quality of content decreases.
In addition, generals are less focused by their nature, so people just dump in any shit. You start to get meaningless "posting for its own sake" and unfunny "in jokes." For example you will rarely see "First for..." posts except in a general.
If you need further convincing regarding the shitty nature of generals, look at the the following:

>and /trek/ in /tv/
/trek/ is the unkindest cut of all since /tv/ star trek threads used to be top quality, but some fucking faggot ruined them over the course of a single month by posting generals.
I hope you reconsider your decision to start a sopranos general on /tv/ as Sopranos threads are still pretty good.

I'm on season 4 of my rewatch and every fucking scene with Junior is pure gold. I had completely forgot about him staring down the court sketch artist after he saw the shitty drawing on the news.

Pure gold. I'm at that same season right now. His Alzheimer's downfall is gonna be tough to get through next season. He was easily one of the best characters on the show.
