You can really notice how the passage of time in the real world impacted Raimi's choices. In the earlier films Peter would have made a racial slur, but because of the change in the political climate by the time Spiderman 3 was in production, even Raimi had to tone it down a bit

To stay in line with the story, I always thought changing Venom from an alien to something Harry created thru Oscorp as a means to up his father's original serum in order to ensure his victory over Peter would have worked. Venom could have been the symbolic manifestation of the lies and deceit shared between them manifesting as the "thing that they're not"Aunt May talks about in the trailer. 3 had the right elements to be good, it just needed some editing and, honestly, less faithfulness to the source material. The things they had already changed had worked for the better. Venom needed to be grounded as something made due to Harry's desire for revenge and Sandman should have been cut entirely. Goblin and Octopus were the same victims of awry science that affected Peter. They were also intelligent men. The idea for Sandman was okay, but his base character plus his fantasy-like powers didn't mesh at all with the previously established villains. He was honestly the biggest misfire, even with Raimi's preference for him.

I know it was. But the writers were struggling a lot, too. Multiple scripts and they still couldn't get it right. I like the idea of Sandman being Peter's vehicle towards forgiveness, but the plot wasn't necessary to begin with and his inherent qualities as an individual lacked the connection to Peter that made Goblin and Octopus feel personal. The movie should have tightly focused upon where it left off with Harry at the end of 2. Harry's descent into madess, his adopting the paranoia and insanity of his father, his pulling away from Peter as Peter tries to explain to him the truth of what happened, etc. People can act like Raimi was right in not giving a shit, but that's wrong. 1 and 2 were clearly leading the two friends toward an inevitable conflict, and the careless handling of that in 3 ruined it. Venom could have been salvaged as a science experiment accidentally developing sentience which would then cause it to feed on both Peter's frustration with Harry and Harry's hunger for revenge. If a sacrifice had to be made in the overall work for clarity and coherence, it should have been Sandman.

Great characters, Alfred Molina does an incredible acting job as the villain. Full of action scenes, all of which are competent and exciting. Spider-Man has legitimate character development and the movie hits multiple emotional highs that other cape movies haven't been able to replicate (train scene and the climax). should have been lizard and hobgoblin with the theme being helping his enemies rather than beating them and the symbiote suit being used to defeat his enemies but realizing his enemies are his friends etc.. would have thematically fit nicely and THEN you leave venom for a possible 4th movie. the wanting to discard his powers for a normal life has been a running theme since the first one so the kurt lizard curing stuff should definitely have happened in that movie saga.

Re watched the first 2 Raimi films just yesterday (and I've watched them many times in the last 2 years) so I could give the freshest impression possible. They're fucking good. Really good. With the rare exception of some cringey dated shit like Macy Gray or any other "of that time" pop songs that the films use, they're solid as fuck and anyone who can't enjoy them has a giant log stuck up their ass, probably for the comics.

Ain't that the truth. I never really had problems like that in my life and it still hit me hard. That movie has plenty of cool action that you enjoy as a kid, but it also has scenes that you don't really understand until you're an adult. It's like watching it again years later unlocks more depth that you didn't notice before. It's a completely different experience and watching it as an adult only makes you like it more. So few children's movie pull this off.

That's the reason why I originally disliked Raimi's trilogy. I almost prefer the Amazing Spiderman series just for having a better Peter Parker and Gen Stacey despite falling short in every other aspect. Homecoming felt like a shitty kids movie though. Here's the thing: Raimi (and most film-makers of his generation) knew the limitations of CGI and how to use them sparingly without compromising the tension/emotion of a scene. Just like how the first Jurassic Park's CGI looks like shit today but loses none of its impact.

The new generation are so spoiled by the technology at their disposal that they don't realize that CGI (and the proper use of CGI) is a ART FORM unto itself, and not something you can half-ass on set and then just "fix in post", as the popular expression goes.

Honestly, outside of small things like organic webshooters, Raimi successfully adapted Silver Age Spidey to the modern era of film. The first two movies (and hell, parts of the third,) are the closest yet to feeling not just like Spider-Man, but also Spider-Man's world. There's no shame in regard to the source material, Raimi embraces it hard and it shows.
