I was very struck by when 12 was regurgitating previous regeneration lines, and the fact he did BOTH of Tennant's ("I don't want to go", "It's started, I'm regenerating") was really neat.

>/who/ presents:
DOCTOR WHO: SHIT TRIPS Vol. 2
- The Anthology -

>Are you a true fan of Doctor Who?
>Have you ever written down a sequence of words?

If the answer is yes or no, then you are ready to contribute a literary masterpiece to the second /who/ collection of original Doctor Who-based short fiction.

/who/ did it once. Now, we're gonna do it again! Yet another entry in an age-old tradition of p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶f̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶i̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶i̶t̶i̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ / celebrating the magic of Who and the talent of a community.

There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

>- Can involve any Doctor(s), companion(s), side characters, spinoff characters and beyond, as your heart desires
>- Can be in any style, whether it's "legitimate writing", "pisstake", or "shitpost".
>- Can be about absolutely anything
>- The main focus is on good fun in the vein of the wiki, although serious entries are allowed. (If you're going to write smut, maybe approach it with a degree of levity)

Stuck for ideas? Try starting with your favourite TARDIS team (or for timeliness, 12/Bill “I'm a lesbian” Potts) and one of these authentic titles:
http://www.saberpunk.net/DoctorWho/DoctorWhoSerialGenerator.php
https://glyphobet.net/drwho
And free scenario prompts:
http://games.usvsth3m.com/drwho/

We are going to be starting an index on the wiki for the collection. Anyone can contribute, no signups/pitches required. If you have ideas, feel free to broadcast them.
The rest is self-explanatory. Format for uploading your work is up to you, as long as it can be conveniently copied across (and ideally don't spam long texts in /who/ directly). (Pastebin works well.)

BONUS: Anyone who wants to do cover art or "illustrations" is encouraged.
>>

Even though I've found the 12th Doctor to be kind of inconsistent character wise, I'm sad that he's going, he's a fucking great actor.

And nothing against the bloke but I really hope it isn't Kris Marshall. You either need a renowned actor who can fucking ace it (Eccleston, Capaldi) or a relatively unknown/non-household name actor who can totally inhabit the role (Tennant, Smith). Marshall is well known enough that he'd be distracting.

ENOUGH. Mackinnon has literally never created visual kino in his life. The closest he ever came was Listen and that's because most of the script took place in dark rooms, and he still ruined it with his bastard neon lighting. Flatline only avoided looking like utter gash because most of it was done in post-processing.
I still remember the fucking multiple primary colour filters over the one corridor in Time Heist. Kill me.

Back and forth?

S8 beginning - Am I a good man? Wrestling with who he is. Irritable, cranky, unsure of himself.
S8 ending - I am an idiot. Found his identity, more carefree, more compassionate.

S9 beginning - Again, I am an idiot. Guitar, playful antics, carefree. Clara acting the same way leads them to bounce off each other co-dependently and make each other more and more reckless, leading to...
S9 ending - realising he went too far, and dialling things back down. Less playful, more self-assured.

S10 beginning - Settled down, still wants to adventure but is being dutiful, guarding the Vault and whatnot.
S10 ending - After giving in and having some (fairly careful) adventures (again, building off the tempering his personality aspect the last 2 series did), his duty is paid off in Missy turning good - but he doesn't see it, and everything seems to go to shit for him again, and he starts to regenerate. He's angry at his life going down the same road so many times, so he tries to refuse to do so, leading to a christmas special where he presumably comes to terms with that, alongside 1 going through presumably a vaguely similar crisis.

For more than 50 years the Doctor has represented an alternative, kinder, less destructive form of masculinity, and that's good. But it's still falling short of the final step towards a truly humanistic vision - the empathic suggestion that the outward body maketh not the personality. When the Doctor is demonstrated as able to maintain his essence regardless of gender, he will have reached the next stage in his evolution.

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-08-24/doctor-who-at-50-the-ninth-doctor-speaks--a-message-from-christopher-eccleston

>Finally, in something of a coup for the BFI, Justin Johnson read out a special message from Christopher Eccleston: “I love the BFI. I love the Doctor and hope you enjoy this presentation. Joe Ahearne directed five of the 13 episodes of the first series. He understood the tone the show needed completely – strong, bold, pacy visuals coupled with wit, warmth and a twinkle in the performances, missus.

>“If Joe agrees to direct the 100th anniversary special, I will bring my sonic and a stair-lift and – providing the Daleks don’t bring theirs – I, the ninth Doctor, vow to save the universe and all you apes in it.”

I'd just like to say that while this is mostly true with some reachs, it didn't make the Capaldi era that more memorable and it surprisingly didn't make his character more interesting.

I guess it's because his development wasn't that well executed, while the beats are there they aren't really felt by audience. You can see that with how no one can really agree to how he developed/if he developed at all. This wasn't Breaking Bad where the character change is evident, and that's what it needed.
And even then, an era is defined by stories, and the Capaldi era had a lot of meh ones.

anyways, it's not a stretch that one could have that interpretation of his character, but seeing as Moffat is famous for thinking about moment to moment continuity over extended continuity, and because he seems to just say he wants to go in a different direction with Capaldi at the beginning of each season in a way that does not imply a progression, I'm going to say you are just inputting it to make it more consistent

Pretty much, but its based on how many people bet on something. So if 1000 people suddenly bet on Kris Marshall, the odds would get smaller. But if 1000 people bet on Kris Marshall, it would suggest knowledge. So it correlates basically.
>>
>>84953482
If Moffat and the BBC weren't willing to commit to a mature Doctor (Series 9 proved they weren't) then they shouldn't have bothered casting Capaldi in the first place.

People always complain about how S9 12 is a 'different character for no reason' because he's more passionate and fun-loving, and doesn't indulge in quite as much performative callousness. But I never really got that because his 'I am an idiot' revelation in DiH is there to be a turning point for his character, he quite literally relieves himself of what's been burdening him and realises he's supposed to be having fun.

And I think you're reading too much into it because I've never stated otherwise.
Discussion is about the clash of opinions and different perspectives on a subject. Nothing is progressing to an idea or resolution if you stop to point out that an opinion is an opinion.
You could keep the ball rolling and respond with your ideas on my ideas, but who cares, it's all valid, it's all opinions.

Of course we're both welcome to our own interpretations and I do honestly appreciate you aren't trying to invalidate mine so much as just disagree with it. I can actually have a conversation with you, whereas a post like >>84953385 is full of thought-terminating phrases presenting opinion as fact. I'm not sure if I'm coming across earnestly here, but I seriously am being honest in saying I really do appreciate you using language like "I'm going to say" and "interpretation of a character" instead of "you are wrong, my opinion is objectively right", etc. I disagree with what you're saying, like you disagree with me, but we're not being dicks to each other about it. That's how it should be, IMO.

>>84953607
Exactly, seems pretty clearly telegraphed to me, but to be fair there's a year's gap between s8 and s9 and "I am an idiot" comes late into the s8 finale, so I don't think the repercussions fully sank in for some people, so tank guitar fun Doctor may have seemed inconsistent in that sense for them. His era will play well in future years when people binge it all at once and can see it more cohesively, I think.

>>84953653
You could do what I do, and couch your opinions in phrasing that makes it clear they're just opinions and not an attempt to invalidate others. I have loads of interesting conversations here, and the more interesting ones are always when I make an effort to really try and engage with someone else and not invalidate them or talk over them or anything. Discussion may be a clash of opinions, but it doesn't have to be a clash of personalities, there's no need to make it argumentative IMO.

I really like this attitude, "Capaldi is great and hopefully one day there will be someone even better!" is a very Doctor forward-looking stance, instead of something like "Capaldi is great, the show shall never see his like again". >>
>>84953988
nah its not him, the BBC wouldn't go with such a safe choice
>>
>>84953960
>I really dont know and you could actually be correct in your analysis

I don't even really see it as being correct or not IMO, I think "Capaldi has no character development and is haphazardly written" is as valid an opinion as mine, I don't think there's any inherently "right" opinion, but the fun of it is sharing ideas and "evidence" and talking about it and all that jazz. I think what I think, I share my ideas, other people think what they think, they share their ideas, that's fandom, it's a good thing.

I'm never trying to shut down conversation or invalidate other people, if I come across that way or do that, I really do apologise. Posting my take on Capaldi's character development is me sharing my ideas, not trying to "disprove" other people, and if it doesn't come across like that, I am sorry.

In an interview somewhere, he said he didn't feel it was the right time for him to go for the role, that he didn't feel like he'd done enough or got to the right age to do it.
>>

Not really, he kinda jumped to top of bookies favourites about a week before he was announced.

At the time he was playing the main villain in The Musketeers, and it was assumed he'd join the Veep cast, so he was overlooked cos we thought he'd be too busy.
>>
Here's the Twelfth Doctor's "character development":

1. Moffat makes the Doctor too hostile and callous in series 8 (despite some Matt Smith-y dialogue).
2. After pressure from BBC higher-ups, Moffat massively overcompensates by turning the character into a gimmicky goofy clown in Series 9.
3. Moffat realises he has gone too far and somewhat moderates the character in Series 10; giving us, more or less, the Doctor Capaldi should have been given to play in the first place (minus the guitar, shades and hoodie).

>>
>>84953760
>You could do what I do, and couch your opinions in phrasing that makes it clear they're just opinions and not an attempt to invalidate others.
Look, I'm genuinely sorry if you feel that way, but there's no intent on my end to undermine or invalidate, that's just how I write. And I really don't think that policing myself to couch how I express is productive, because even if there isn't "In my opinion" before every opinion, you could still see it was all opinions. No argument should need a sentence to validate it as an opinion and not fact, common sense should have you already noticing that. Honestly this is kinda bizarre to me, I've never seen this before.
Bottom line: Don't take to it heart, man. As I said, I think you've read too much into it and in no way I wrote my opinion as fact. We're just faceless people talking on an anime board.

The entire premise of this post (a scene where he's suffering from hallucinations and spouts out a few callback lines somehow being representative of anything, let alone his overall character) is retarded, but one of the things I'll actually remember most about Capaldi's Doctor is his way with words. One that often sticks out to me is
>I applaud your courage, but I deplore your stupidity. And I will mourn your deaths, which will be terrifying, painful, and without honour.
I thought they always wrote him with an interesting balance of eloquence, contempt, and compassion.

Why doesn't he just use some regeneration energy for his new eyes?

Ten did it for a fuckin' hand.
>>
The christmas special ends with One and Twelve going back to their respective TARDISes to regenerate. Twelve has held off his regeneration for too long and is close to death; he's changed his mind and realizes he has to change, but he's struggling to trigger to final regeneration energy. At the last minute, McGann comes up the stairs from the console room's basement, cradles Capaldi in his arms, and holds a chalice of magic timelord potion to his lips, helping him drink it, and whispers "physician, heal thyself" as he regenerates into that old hag from the Sisterhood of Karn.

I know you probably won't care about stuff like this, but people would be so much more receptive to engaging with you if you framed it like "Here's my take on 12's character development" instead of presenting your opinion as fact, complete with condescending quote marks, from the get-go. Is it about appearing superior, or having conversation?

>>84954204
>After pressure from BBC higher-ups, Moffat massively overcompensates by turning the character into a gimmicky goofy clown in Series 9.
How do you reconcile "I am an idiot", with its requisite flashbacks tying up 12's mindset through most of S8's episodes?

>>84954279
Do you truly consider being mindful of how you talk to be "policing yourself"? I'm not asking that in like an incredulous "wow you're a dick" way, I'm legitimately interested, because that viewpoint is so alien to me. Everything I say, I always try to empathise with who I'm saying it to, so I can communicate it in the best way. Then again I work in PR and my mind's been full of positioning theory and whatnot for years so I guess I come at comms from a different angle, it's just who I am.

>No argument should need a sentence to validate it as an opinion and not fact, common sense should have you already noticing that.

It's not a question of need, or policing, or restraint, it's a question of efficient communication. If I want a cigarette, I'm not going to go to some rando at the pub and go "hey cunt, give us ya ciggies or I'll slice ya mum", I'd ask "hey, mind if I bum one?" if a mate pulls out a pack or something. I'm not crushing my free speech or anything there, I'm just acting as appropriate for the context, and I get the best outcome for everyone involved.

>Bottom line: Don't take to it heart, man.
Me earnestly engaging in a convo doesn't equal me being personally offended or anything dude.
>>

3. The Doctor commits himself to help his now willing old mate see eye to eye with his values, but now her past catches up with her and breaks things. After which the Doctor is forced to move on again but rejects the idea of changing who he is to do it.

All the while we've come to learn that this Doctor is a genuine, altruistic man who craves exposure and has an absurd sense of justice for helping those in need or those he's wronged.

And honestly, that's just the surface.

I would be ok with a female Doctor, but not with Jodie Whittaker. That would be a terrible, terrible choice. She was great in Broadchurch, but she would be a shit Doctor.

What's the reveal gonna be like do you think? A short trailer showing 13? Or a chatshow thing like with Capaldi? It's weird because nothing's scheduled on the BBC, it's just Wimbledon until 18:30 and then the news. My bet's on a trailer only, but who knows, they might've done a short pre-filmed Q&A and air that once the final match is over.
>>
>>84954948
I really like how you frame it around Missy a lot, that works well
>>
post yfw it's actually an unknown actor
>>
>>84954204
It was the plan from the fucking start to have him change over time you retard. He wasn't always going to be the hostile Doctor of series 8. It was a literal character arc. God you runts are beyond simple.
>>
>>84954981
They wouldn't have footage for a trailer, surely. I think it will be like the Bill introduction scene, a short, random, untethered scene of 13 doing some vaugely Doctor-y thing. That played well when they did it for Bill.
>>
>>84954989
if he/she was unknown then he/she wouldnt have acted in anything

>>
>>84955011
T b h in many ways it's a redux of what Colin Baker endlessly bangs on about being the original plan for his run, so it's not like some huge stretch. "Goes from mean to nice" isn't rocket science, although 12 is more like "goes from mean to carefree to responsible to sad" IMO
>>
>>84955011
>it was the plan because it lines up with my viewpoints

Clara was going to leave in Last Christmas, they definitely didnt plan to have an arc relating to her in S9
>>
That teaser was great. I was on my commute mindlessly scrolling through Facebook when I saw it. The key, the slight electric currents, 13 appearing all over the planet. Great way to hype things up, and doing the reveal at the end of a huge sports thing is a great idea because the entire country will be watching.
>>
>>84955056
Who is Mini Matt Smith? I've heard the name and that there's some kind of drama where people hate him or something but I need juicy details
>>
>>84954984
You're quick. A lot of who he is was seamlessly tied into her.

>>84955075
Explains why it was such a clusterfuck.
>>
>>84955075
It's cool how Flatline retroactively ties very directly into her character arc for S9, and I liked how Moff actually directly played those ideas of Clara getting repeated "outs" from the TARDIS life but not taking them into the actual themes for S9. A TV writer who can fit unexpected production stuff like actors suddenly deciding to stay on, into actual fitting story beats, is a wonderful thing and I'm sure something the bosses like about him.

From GB

>I know who it is believe me or not. From the same source I received my series 10 finale spoilers (which all turned out to be true) It's neither Jodie Whittaker or Kris Marshall. It is however someone who has been mentioned on here before and relatively recently too. I don't want to say directly who because I don't want to affect the betting odds but I think you may be able to work out who it is.

She has also starred in the television series Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008), Wired (2008), Return to Cranford (2009), Marchlands (2011), Black Mirror (2011), Broadchurch (2013 - 2017), The Assets (2014),"Trust Me" (2017), and Doctor Who (2017)

>Do you truly consider being mindful of how you talk to be "policing yourself"?
It depends on how much I have to do it and the situation I'm in. This is casual anonymous discussion on 4chan so I don't feel like I need to put "in my opinion" or anything, no filter is needed here.

>Everything I say, I always try to empathise with who I'm saying it to, so I can communicate it in the best way.
Sure, but again, faceless typing, there isn't anyone to emphathise at face-value and I'm not having a 1 to 1 chat with you. There isn't a best approach here besides just doing it, it's what makes this site so fun.

Same thing here. That's basic manners and following the general rule of "not being a cunt". We're under more complex layers of how to act because this is discussion.
And again, I legit don't feel like my first post was any less efficient to putting in my idea.
Finally I just feel that we're fundamentally thinking differently when expressing. I like to throw this phrase a lot because my vocabulary is shit, but this is random internet discussion, the thought of a best outcome for everyone involved or anything of the sort barely goes through my head. I'm just talking to nameless strangers who I'll never meet personally.

>Me earnestly engaging in a convo doesn't equal me being personally offended or anything dude.
Alright then, I was worried about that.

Just the whole idea of mindfulness being filter is crazy to me, it's like saying a tongue is a "filter" for speaking, or that my feet are a "filter" for walking, they're not filters, they're the active tools that do the process.

>I'm just talking to nameless strangers who I'll never meet personally.

But they're still people. If I tell someone to kill themselves here, they aren't a bot or anything, there's an actual person on the other end of the keyboard reading that and knowing it's directed to them. I don't really get this point. You'll never meet them personally, so what? They're people and your actions affect them. You can't see it, but...so what? They're still real. But neither of us are dicks so idk what the problem really is, neither of us are bullying anyone or anything so it's all good.

I forget what post we're even talking about at this point t b h but we both seem to agree that people have different communication styles and that's a pretty normal thing so, uh, cool.
