There were a few moments that seemed to be overacted but every character in the movie had scennes that were overacted. I blame it on disney.

For some reason Disney and Lucasfilm wanted Rey to be a twist so they made her as bland as possible in the promo material leading to the release of the film while marketing Kylo and the Stormtroopers a whole lot and making people believe Finn was going to be the jedi of this new trilogy.

How was the TFA Marketing campaign ? It was fucking huge, it was everywhere from bus to fucking chips with no mention of Rey being the main character or a jedi so kids learnt to not care much about Rey (let's be honest kids mostly care about the cool looking bad guys, robots and lightsaber weilding dudes).

She lacks agency so she doesn't have as much of an impression. Luke is hardly the most popular star wasrs character yet he feels like a real protagonist because he has goals, sets out to achieve them, then either succeeds or fails. But Rey doesn't really have clearly defined goals, doesn't really do much to achieve them, and ends up getting sidetracked into stuff she isn't personally invested in. With Rey the story feels like stuff happening to her and she just goes along with it rather than actively shaping her own destiny. Luke did things because he wanted to do them, even if other people told him he couldn't, and the movies largely dealt with the consequences of his decisions and actions. But Rey's decisions and actions don't count for much so far.

Can we just be completely honest here? Putting aside all the accusations of her being a franchise ruining Mary Sue. The real truth is simple

Rey is an insufferable cunt. She's literally a cunt to everyone in the film. Good guys, bad guys, it doesn't matter. Her first reaction to everyone, every single character she meets, is to act like a cunt. She is one of the most unlikable characters in movie history. It's very difficult to support her when all she does is act like an unpleasant cunt.

She also can't act to save her life.

Yeah this is the sort of thing that really makes me dislike a Mary Sue type character. There's lots of Mary Sue characters I can actually enjoy, Akagi from... Akagi and Yumeko from Kakegurui but the reactions other characters have to them make sense and are believable. Everyone is amazed and scared by Akagi but he doesn't really have any friends and none of the other characters really like him.

She's a boring forgettable Mary Sue in a universe filled with interesting and memorable flawed characters.

If she was a boring side character that the main characters ran into and interacted with for maybe five to ten minutes, she would be okay.

An underdog who goes through obstacles and hardship to become the best he is, is always a more intriguing angle than an already established badass breezing past all obstacles without any issues.

It is alot easier to empathize with an underdog because everyone knows the feeling of starting somewhere and getting better in time with experience.

Once you introduce a deus ex machina character like Rey who you know will get out of any situation kills all suspense.

And thats just the role in a story angle. There is absolutely nothing memorable about the character itself.
