Early 17th Century, a Shaolin tournament is held every generation. Kung Lao, the Champion of the Prestigious event is betrayed by fellow Shaolin member, Shang Tsung, who has tapped into forbidden sorcery involving alternate dimensions.

After Tsung's defeat, he proposes to join the Wisemen's Council, overseers of the tournament but is rejected. He manages to bring in a behemoth from another dimension to take his place in the next tournament belonging to a four-armed race called the Shokan. His name is Goro, Prince of the Shokan race from the Etherworld dimension.

Goro not only defeats Lao but with Tsung attacking the Council and appointing himself and his chosen few as the new overseers, he corrupts the tournament by asking Goro to kill Lao. Unheard of. Goro kills Lao becoming Champion of the Shaolin tournament.

Cut to 2019 and we are introduced to the descendants of Kung Lao with Kung Lao (II) and Liu Kang. Liu Kang has turned his back on the old Shaolin ways. Lao is a traditionalist.

They are brought together by the mysterious Raiden, one of the Shaolin's elders and legends. He also brings in Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, the former a MMA turned Hollywood B-movie action star, the latter who is on a quest to apprehend Kano, a Japanese-American war criminal and gun-runner who is responsible for the murder of an ATF Agent.

Meanwhile, a clan of assassins have been given a contract to kill Tsung - so they send Bi-Han, a member of the shadowy organization. Who is being followed into the tournament by an unknown clan member called Sasori or The Scorpion, due to his makeshift torpedo-gun with poisonous arrow tips attached to his wrist resembling a Scorpion's tail.

A grounded yet fantastical story with A-tier actors. Hiroyuki Sanada as Kang, Ryan Gosling or Dave/James Franco plays Johnny Cage as the MMA fighter turned actor, Tom Hardy plays Kano, who is a third American, and a quarter Japanese who grew up in Japan, Charlize Theron as Sonya, hot money maker right here.

As long as Scott Adkins plays Johnny Cage I'm happy.

We open on a poorly lit corridor with earthen embankments. A line of children in loin cloths, male and female, cower and cling to themselves for warmth. Occasionally they brush up against one another, but recoil and snarl when this happens.

At the front of the line, one by one, the children are being beheaded by a hooded figure with a yellow mask. Miserably, but obediently, the next child takes the place of his recently decapitated predecessor. As the axe swings towards his neck, the boy's eyes light up briefly. We don't see what happens, but the axe falls to the ground in two splintered halves.

CUT TO a wide shot that shows an endless line of children and hooded adults snaking down the side of a mountain. They all throw up their hands and cheer. Another has been chosen.

We cut to black and words MORTAL KOMBAT slam onto the screen, wreathed in flame

I would focus on Scorpion, his story arc is pretty tragic. Sub Zero is the coolest but Scorpion's story makes you hate him.

We open with Shang Tsung working as a stand up comic to make ends meet, he starts his routine: "And can you believe, I was waiting for my turn and then this NIGGER shows up, I fucking hate NIGGERS"

The greatest warriors from multiple universes are assembled to fight in a tournament. Johnny cage is the MC from earth.
Opening is each main warrior receiving an ominous letter and/or amulet in their own designed universe that when worn teleports them to the MK universe.
Cage who was trained by monks but now is a Hollywood star receives his and determined to prove he is still a great fighter opts to go.
In the MK universe, fighters spanning all generations of MK games are assembled in a lavish castle where Shang tsung thanks them all for coming together and commends them on their accomplishments as great warriors. He then lays down the rules for the tournament. During this cage meets Liu Kang and the two exchange friendly words. Tsung explains the winner will be deemed the greatest warrior that has ever existed among all universes as well as being granted immortality.
after tsung is finished a giant banquet is had. During the banquet, scuffles break out showcasing some of the characters abilities. Cage and kang eat together and watch with delight at the mayhem. Kang gets whacked with food and quickly stands up as scorpion walks by bumping into him and spilling scorpions mead. Scorpion and Kang exchange harsh words. Cage stands and gives scorpion a piece of his mind too but overall the situation diffuses as they decide to save themselves for the tournament. That night cage finds it hard to sleep wondering if he's made a mistake.
Then there's the tournament. The crowd is made up of nameless people. Cage has a love interest with one of the females. People fight and die to the amusement of the crowd. Kang ends up wondering around the castle one night and discovers tsung shapeshifting into dead warriors from the tournament. They discover that the amulets grant tsung their spirits once they are killed by battle. Goro is in it and he's awesome.
Cage, kang, a female, jax, and sub zero join forces to kill tsung.

The other warriors still determined to gain ultimate fame and immortality are convinced by tsung to take them out. As each warrior dies tsung is seen growing in power.
Goro fights jax.
Female fights female.
Sub zero fights raiden.
Cage and Kang fight scorpion and reptile.
Absolute mayhem in the castle. The gang finally reaches tsung. Epic battle where all 5 fight tsung alone as he shifts between all warriors countering every attack. Blocking as one and parrying with another. The sheer energy of tsung is bringing the castle down around them as the world splits filling the depths below with lava. Eventually the battle climaxes with everyone except cage and tsung left standing. A battered scorpion appears and cage is outnumbered. The three fight and cage is getting his ass handed to him. Kang recovers and the fight begins to even out.
The final battle concludes with Some quick thinking as scorpion attempts to hook cage, cage dodges and tsung is impaled. Kang then bicycle kicks scorpion over the edge and drags tsung to the depths below with him.
With tsung gone his spell is broken and the amulets can be removed. One by one the characters say goodbye and remove their amulets leaving only cage and kang left. The two embrace and Kang calls cage the greatest warrior he has ever known. The two remove their amulets.
Back on earth cage feels bored with Hollywood and decides to return to China and continue the study of martial arts. When he arrives he is greeted by a familiar face. It turns out liu Kang was also from earth. The two embrace with a masculine handshake and the credits roll as they spar while the original theme plays
