I would argue that modern - society has become abstract in terms of free-range thought whereas more traditional methods are seen as ideal or opportunistic.

If one could possibly take a step back from BOTH ideologies one would truly realize that humanity is in fact the same no matter how hard we try to apply different forms of social dynamics. Such is life really.

Tbh this is what I took away from it. The irony is that the 'normal' people around Bateman have become so ludicrously self-observed, that they dwarf even a murderous psychopath in their vanity and egotism; they've come to see their behaviour as 'normal' and experience even less discomfort from it than Bateman, who can't even draw attention to his crimes when he wants to.

Isn't that the point? We've all felt that same frustrated and empty feeling that Bateman felt. He chose to deal with it in a murderous and psychopathic way, but we all recognize that feeling, which is why you feel bad for him in the end. He's sort of like an upper class Travis Bickle.
>>
>>84907900
/tv/ in one post.
>>
>>84908368
>>84908469
(Spoiler warning)
The book and film play off the idea that Bateman either:

A. He never killed anyone. Each murder was part of his delusion.

B. He DID kill Allen and a bunch if other people, but people are so obsessed with themselves and their place on this weird Yuppie social hierarchy that they mistake one person with the next and can't remember anyone's name and/or face.

The implication is that Bateman's lawyer (the guy he talks to on the phone and sees the next day after his possibly unreal rampage) either actually met Paul Allen because he was never murdered, or he met someone who he mistook for Allen because of the weird blindness that affects the Yuppies.

TL;DR Bateman either killed Allen or didn't because Yuppie culture is a cancer

>implying it isn't just as shitty in the 2010s
IMPLYING!? Holy crap, you have no idea what you are talking about, at all.

1980's NYC may not have been the "ugliest display of humanity in modern history", but it wasn't pretty I can tell you that. You know all those strange pop culture references and jokes about new york from 80's and early 90's tv and film? Yeah, that wasn't hyperbolic. It really did seem like the whole place could turn into The Warriors or Escape From NY at any moment. People really would have just minded their own business if they saw a ninja turtle walking down the street in midtown.

Today, you could walk from the bottom of manhattan to the top, and other than the major landmarks you'd hardly even know it was the same place. Same goes for most neighborhoods in the other boroughs (although there are certainly a few glaring exceptions).

>“These questions are punctuated by other questions, as diverse as "Will I ever do time?" and "Did this girl have a trusting heart?" The smell of meat and blood clouds up the condo until I don't notice it anymore. And later my macabre joy sours and I'm weeping for myself, unable to find solace in any of this, crying out, sobbing "I just want to be loved," cursing the earth and everything I have been taught: principles, distinctions, choices, morals, compromises, knowledge, unity, prayer - all of it was wrong, without any final purpose. All it came down to was: die or adapt. I imagine my own vacant face, the disembodied voice coming from its mouth: These are terrible times. Maggots already writhe across the human sausage, the drool pouring from my lips dribbles over them, and still I can't tell if I'm cooking any of this correctly, because I'm crying too hard and I have never really cooked anything before.”

>"Oh, Patrick," she's saying. "You're still the same. I don't know if that's good or bad."
>"Say it's good."
>"Why? Is it?" she asks, frowning. "Was it? Then?"
>"You only knew one facet of my personality," I say. "Student."
>"Lover?" she asks, her voice reminding me of someone human.

>And though it has been in no way a romantic evening, she embraces me and this time emanates a warmth I'm not familiar with. I am so used to imagining everything happening the way it occurs in movies, visualizing things falling somehow into the shape of events on a screen, that I almost hear the swelling of an orchestra, can almost hallucinate the camera panning low around us, fireworks bursting in slow motion overhead, the seventy-millimeter image of her lips parting and the subsequent murmur of "I want you" in Dolby sound. But my embrace is frozen and I realize, at first distantly and they with greater clarity, that the havoc raging inside me is gradually subsiding and she is kissing me on the mouth and this jars me back into some kind of reality and I lightly push her away. She glances up at me fearfully.

The scenes when Bateman is talking about his love of music are my favorite. I don't particularly care for Huey Lewis in all honesty though.

There's an, IIRC, a total of two chapters in the book where he talks about Phil Collins and Whitney Houston. Shit's weird, but very engrossing into the mood for the book.

>“It's a powerful statement and one that Whitney sings with a grandeur that approaches the sublime. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late for us to better ourselves, to act kinder. Since it's impossible in the world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really, and it's beautifully stated in this album.”

He has entire chapters where he'll go off on a tangent about music in a very strange way. Ellis made a point to punctuate each rant with some weirdness about Bateman, like a blip about murder, knowing people might not catch it because the whole chapter would be a wall of text.

It's also a point that these rants juxtapose the idea that people might get that Bateman is some well-cultured guy. In one of them, he thinks that Whitney Houston is a jazz singer, and I think he guesses the date of a Phil Collins album wrong.

It's also of note that this extends to his descriptions of clothing. He describes everyone not exactly by how they act, but by what they wear, which speaks volumes about him alone, but if you took the time to actually realize what everyone is really wearing, they'd apparently look like clowns instead of sharp, slick investment bankers.
