That's Oliver Stone, and that man absolutely has made bad movies. Probably more bad than good, actually. Man's got loads of talent; self control, not so much.

The actual hipster choice isn't tarantino though. He probably doesn't even rate. That title goes to Cohens, Wes, or maybe Spike Jonze. And they are all legitimately in the discussion.

DUNE IS HIS ONLY GOOD MOVIE

nah, kidding of course, Dune sucked too. I've never been able to put my finger on what it is, but something about Lynch's style just makes me irrationally angry. It's not even the "ooh soo weird" angle, I like plenty of unconventional stuff. Whatever you guys are seeing, I've got a permanent blind spot there.

Could be. Every time I see something Lynch makes, I have this vision of 4 coffee-shop hipsters hanging out at a late night diner after the theatre, sipping coffee and talking about how "smart" and "deep" it is, and I want to shake them and scream "It's fucking nothing", but they can't hear me.

Clearly in the minority though, so it's probably just me.
>>

>>84910370
Lynch constantly, throughly exploits expectation in a fashion that many criticize as being manipulative, That may be what irritates you. If you haven't, you should watch The Straight Story and The Elephant Man, both are great films by him that are also completely conventional. Sounds like you might just be a pretentious autist though
>>
>>84907899
>>84908581
Lolita is one of the best book adaptations and yes he has a movie that HE considers bad and doesn't even include to his filmography, which is Spartacus. Studio made him rush and he got some problems with Kirk.
>>
>>84910296
Aww, I forgot about Cronenberg. Probably not in the running, though, he's had many gems but also a few turds.
>>
>>84910370
Great thing about his cinema is that he destroys the any concept of time place and character. All the time. Just like you can't ephasise with any Kubrick character,
>>
>>84907385
You're a big guy.
>>
>>84910394
>Lynch constantly, throughly exploits expectation in a fashion that many criticize as being manipulative
OK, so, I think I've seen all of his major entries. A few of the critical darlings (like blue velvet and the first part of twin peaks) I've watched multiple times, with escalating levels of frustration. It's not even "manipulative", it's blatant manipulation with an attached ego about how good the manipulation is. Like a magician who walks you through how his whole act is going to work, behind the scenes, and repeatedly asks you to agree how clever it is, and all you want him to do is just perform the trick already.

>Sounds like you might just be a pretentious autist though
Yeah, that's certainly a possibility.
>>
>>84904220
>Death Proof was shit.
If you don't enjoy Kurt Russel killing annoying sluts, there is something wrong with you.
>>
>>84910441
>Great thing about his cinema is that he destroys the any concept of time place and character
Yeah, I get that, but then he doesn't fucking USE it for anything. He's just like "oh I cast two people as the same character LOL roll credits". I'm just sitting there at the end thinking "what the hell was that all about?"

Upsetting the establishment is not an end unto itself. Guys like Bergman and Herzog upended established methods, too, but they used that disorientation to deliver themes and messages as a punch directly to your gut. I never get that with Lynch.
>>
>>84907489
Avatar is one of the worst sci fi movies of all time. I'm not even talking about of the 100% pocahontas and Dances with the Wolves rip off, that's fine, many movies does that, it's because HOW he tells his story. The Navi are shitty unsympathetic Indians with laughable bad "nature" occult bullshit, the main character is a forgettable bland white guy who "Show the niggers how to fight, Sieg Heil 14/88", against the military in Avatar the Empire in Star Wars looks extremely diverse and complex in his action.
The ONLY good thing about that movie is the final Action Scene, that's it, else it's below average.
>>
You have to be a grade A contrarian to call Tarantino a bad director.

He's basically the textbook example of a solid filmmaker, you won't have feel enlightened after watching one of his movies; but you will have a decent time.

You really do just sound aggressively autistic and you are projecting like mad. If you watch any interviews with him or know anything about him he doesn't come off like you are describing him at all. Blue Velvet is a fantastic and relatively straightforward thriller so I don't know what you are talking about. If you were using that to describe Inland Empire I would agree, I think that film is genuine wank and he had his head too far up his own ass.
>>
>>84910749
you're 100% right, every character in the film was atrociously written. Betraying humanity (highly advanced spacefaring humanity no less) and dooming it to extinction for the sake of primitive blue aliens is fucking retarded but it could work as a movie if the characters were well-written but they aren't. It's also utterly asinine that they wouldn't just bomb the absolute fuck out of the Navi from high up and the Navi hippie animal force would never stand a chance against the advanced human military.

>>84910749
You totally missed the point, Anon, and the point was pretty hard to miss. James Cameron cares about the technology and industry of movies, not the movies themselves. He's not a film lover, he's an effects lover. He's a great director because he's constantly pushed the bounds of what it's possible to put on film, even though ironically almost none of his movies are timeless classics. His fingerprints are more subtle, because other directors don't copy his framing or composition, but they benefit from access to tech he and his team developed.

Why are people writing articles about deathproof, or trying to separate out the different Grindhouse elements to begin with? The whole point was it was supposed to be an experience, with both films and all the commercials and previews and shit, in a trashy theatre with people shouting at the screen and throwing popcorn. And for what it was designed to be, it hit the nail squarely on the head. It was a great little slice of nostalgia and fun, and one that can't be easily reproduced.

You get some guy picking out one half of the double feature and watching it by himself on his 60" tv, and writing a critique of it? You've completely removed the work from its context. You've become one of these guys who cuts a piece of graffiti off a wall and hangs it in a gallery and then tries to analyze what it MEANS. It doesn't mean anything.

Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars were garbage. Wish he'd return to his roots.

Kubrick made Lolita.
I name Leone for the spot: his worst movie was just mediocre and his other works range from great to godtier.

Death Proof & Kill Bill 1&2 aren't good. I've seen his other movies 3+ each, but those 3 only once

Right, except for John Carpenter's Vampires exists, and that movie is a mess. Carpenter's got as many misses as hits.

>Kill Bill 1&2 aren't good
Kill Bill is one of those divisive ones, since it's constructed almost entirely from inside jokes and winking references, that range from the obscure to the really unbelievably obscure. Nobody likes to be left out of an inside joke. It's very much a for-fans-by-fans piece, obviously with a special spotlight on guys like Bruce Lee, Shaw Bros and Sonny Chiba. If you spent your formative years like Tarantino did, soaking up vast quantities of B action movies, you'll probably be in on a most of the jokes and really enjoy Kill Bill. If not, you'll likely feel left out.
