What are some realistic movies? Any overly dramatic dialogue or situations that would never happen in real life make me roll my eyes/cringe.

The Brothers Grimsby was fantastically realistic
>>
>>84900043
the only overly dramatic/borderline unbelievable part was at the end of the scene in the police station
>>
what are you in the mood for? I can't give you a ton of recs because I haven't seen that many movies but here are some "realistic" films I like:

>Leviathan (2014), [drama]
"In a Russian coastal town, Kolya is forced to fight the corrupt mayor when he is told that his house will be demolished. He recruits a lawyer friend to help, but the man’s arrival brings further misfortune for Kolya and his family."

>Weekend (2011) [romantic drama]
"A (sort of) love story between two guys over a cold weekend in October." If the gayness doesn't turn you away it's a pretty good and kind of bittersweet story about finding really intense connections with someone you barely know.

>Gummo (1997) [dystopian art]
"Solomon and Tummler are two teenagers killing time in Xenia, Ohio, a small town that has never recovered from the tornado that ravaged the community in the 1970s." Realistic to the point that it's almost uncomfortable. Some of it is just footage of regular lower-class Americans.

>Oslo, August 31st (2011) [drama]
"Anders is a recovering drug addict in an Oslo rehab clinic. On the 30th August, he is given a day’s leave to attend a job interview in the city centre." Pretty grounded and a decent depiction of how even educated and sociable people can be fundamentally lonely individuals.

>Two Days, One Night (2014) [drama]
"Sandra is a young woman who has only one weekend to convince her colleagues they must give up their bonuses in order for her to keep her job — not an easy task in this economy."

>Half Nelson (2006) [drama]
"The story concerns an inner city middle-school teacher who forms a friendship with one of his students after she discovers that he has a drug habit." bonus points for The Goose.

that's all I can think of for now, I'm sure there are some good ones I've missed.

Maybe I'm taking your post too literally but Unforgiven has a really well-written script and it has to be described as very poetic. It's filled with metaphors and symbolism. I mean even the characters' names are symbolic

>men of violence
Assigning a title like that to murderers is pretty poetic, as is Eastwood's role in the film. He still gets to kill the biggest scumbag and all his worst deeds happen before the story begins.
>>
>>84900517
Most of the movie was pretty cringe, but I was honestly rolling during that scene. Everything else was forgettable, but that will stick with me for a long time.
>>
>>84900043
>i've never been clinically depressed
>>
>>84900572
You're probably right about that, but I say "men of violence" because it covers killing on a larger scale than just straight-up cold murder. I think it's more about stripping the romanticism away from the act of killing in general.
>all his worst deeds happen before the story begins
Then he murders a bunch of people and rides off to continue living the rest of his life peacefully. It all works out of him, but it by storybook rules it shouldn't.

cassavetes doesn't have a single weak film, the weakest i can think of is shadows, but that's because the only existing cut is a butchered version of the original (also excluding his last credited film, which really isn't even his work)

>>84900043

if you had ever lost a kid, especially a kid old enough to have developed a personality and habits and interests etc, you'd know

your immediate reaction is that you can't go on. whats the point? all of the happiness in your life, everything you worked towards, the future you thought you were going to live, all the times you read your kid bedtime stories til they fell asleep, everything you ever taught them and hoped to teach them, gone in an instant

either someone talks you out of it, you never get an opportunity that feels like it'll work until you heal enough to eventually go on broken and depressed, or you kill yourself

there was nothing at all unrealistic about that scene

haven't seen it yet, been meaning to, especially since i've heard tons of good things about it
check out alverson's the comedy if you haven't. a lot of indie directors have been trying to emulate the realist style cassavetes had been doing and have mostly failed at it (safdie brothers) or used it for some sort of political message (look at all the realist films coming out that have to do with race) the comedy is one of the few films that i think cassavetes would have liked had he still been around.
>>
>>84907121

you dont. you can never move on. you spend the rest of your life surviving and constantly being aware that your life and existence is forever gravely diminished. nothing will ever be as enjoyable as it used to be. the happiest moment of your life has already happened and nothing that comes after will ever come close to what you used to feel

no matter how you try to figure out how to move on, even if you figure out something that'll allow you to exist, it comes with the unforgettable condition that something huge, most of what defines you as a person - your proudest and greatest achievement in life, the thing you love more than anyone and everything, is missing and always will be

thats why the suicide attempt happens. because you can't see anything but the irreversible loss for a very long time
