There is nothing new about any of these shorts, with Firebase being perhaps the most original concept of the bunch.

That being said, I actually liked Zygote the most. It's more of the same in terms of being a descendant of Alien/The Thing, but those movies and that "scenario" works so I don't mind the familiarity of the premise.

All of his usual weaknesses are still apparent (derivation, rigid formulaic plot progression, generic characters & awkward dialogue, trying to cram exposition in right off the bat - though this can be forgiven considering it's a short film), but the monster design was really engaging on a visual level and presented an air of dread surrounding the expectations of what it is capable of (the blood smears, the corpses, the monster's body itself) right up until it was time to deliver (stabbing the guy in the eye).

This to me was the least disappointing of the three larger short films he's created, but also perhaps the most derivative in terms of premise. Blomkamp has a real problem with navigating film tropes, and there a certainly many for this kind of film, but I'd be most willing to see a feature length continuation of Zygote over Raka and Firebase.

It was also nice seeing Dakota Fanning doing something. I legitimately forgot who she was until about 5 minutes into this one.

Biggest disappointment to me is how much worse than Dystrict 9 or Elysium all of those shorts are.
It only reinforces in me what in knew from last 2 movies of Blomkamp, hes a shit writer and should not write his own scripts.
District 9 was his best as he spend his life working on it, its polished enough to work, but all those all assed made on a knee in teh shitter scripts are just full of cliches and serve as no more than unoriginal amalgamation of random old sf movies.

The story could very well end there. There is a conclusion to the main struggle, the escape and fleeing the giant monster. It's basic story telling. It could also go on but honestly there's no need for that.

Rakka and Firebase were both retarded in all the different directions they tried to take it.
Rakka - invisible fairies and clairvoyant cyborgs ON TOP of lizard overlords.

I've only watched the first two, so take this as you will: The first one was fun, but not terribly well done. The second one was neither.

At least this one tried to hammer down one solid plot line, rather than just constantly throw out new ideas without ever expanding on them like the previous two. The problem was the story they chose was the generic "body horror in the grungy factory".

That stuff about the early experiments with the rat brains tied together and sheep organs was ten times more intriguing that the wailing, autistic pile of limbs.
