Well, I guess I just don't get it. I'm not trying to pass off as a tough guy or anything but I never understood what was supposed to be so scary about The Exorcist. Sure, it's well made, and well acted but it isn't scary.

A 15yo got stabbed in front of my school once when I was like 13. I remember a friend calling me to tell me and I got really excited and there was still blood on the ground where he was stabbed and it was just awesome. Another time some junkie broke into the school and a janitor apparently found him just sitting in the dark in an empty classroom. Because it was on our floor during recess everyone was running around panicking. The thrill was great. Best part is that it was around 6pm in late autumn so it was already dark outside.

Halloween is a poorly paced piece of shit and only posers claim to like it, nobody genuinely does.
>>
>>84857277
They aren't supposed to be.
I recently rewatched it and it's much weaker than I remembered, while Prince of Darkness was much better than I remembered.
The script for ITMOM is awful and Carpenter seems to have spent the last of his talent in trying to make something watchable out of it.

only two horror movies ever frightened me. pet sematary when I was 5, candyman when I was 10. that's it (of course now I give no fucks). saw many horror movies growing up, including stephen king's It when I was 7 or 8, literally gave no fucks while all the other idiots were crying. I saw Stephen King's It alone again when I was 10 years old and I thought it was lame as shit (that shower scene with the moving pipes was especially retarded). Saw Exorcist and Exorcist 3 at about 12 years old, absolutely zero fucks given. many others, too. people are pussies.
>>
>>84857356
It's actually brilliantly paced and shot. The problem with it is that it isn't a movie that can be rewatched that many times. It's all about tension and suspense and once that's gone, the movie's left kinda hollow. But it's a really well made film.
>>
>>84857360
Well when I saw Pet Sematary and Candyman I wasnt scared like you little shit-punk.
>>
>>84857323
The family dinner scene is one of the greatest horror scenes ever. The contrast between how absurd everything is and how terrified the girl is, all shot in a very deadpan and straight way, is brilliant. Hooper fucked up by turning it into a straight up comedy for the sequel.

>>
>>84857855
No, I just grew older and learned to appreciate movies in a different way. Eventually, you'll see that ITMOM is pure flash and unconnected scenes without any real point, while Prince of Darkness is great minimalistic filmmaking in the vein of Assault on Precinct 13 (although not as good), with a great soundtrack (ITMOM's was pretty damn bad).
All in all, I'd say that ITMOM is the tipping point of Carpenter's carreer, where you still see many of the things that made him such a legendary director but you can also start seeing all the faults that would turn his 90s output into a rather mediocre version of himself.
>>
>>84856537

Probably Fright Night. Saw it with a friend at a sleepover, we were so happy lol (this was the '90s when internet porn wasn't everywhere).

Anybody else here love Scream? It's probably my favourite horror, even if it's a satire/homage more than anything else.

I saw Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time a few days ago. I got upset right at the start because I knew Tina was gonna die since she had sex, as per the 'rules of surviving a horror movie' as given by Scream. Wes Craven pulled the same trick in both movies. It looked like Tina was going to be the star of NOES since she was the first character introduced, like how you thought Drew Barrymore was going to be the star of Scream since she was the biggest name of that film but they killed her right at the start. I thought Tina was super hot and really didn't want her to die.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvLpbHKV1_8

Of course these horror movie rules don't apply anymore. I love Scream so much (only the first movie, the others never compared).
>>
>>84862247
Yeah, the first Scream was great and is distilled 90's. Especially that ending theme by Soho. At the time it was really a breath of fresh air and the meta commentary fit well and wasn't too drawn out yet.
>>
>>84863033
and its fucking hilarious too and filled with qts
>>
>>84863062
I think Neve looked best with the long hair, personally. I understand why in later movies they had her have it short, but still.
>>
>>84857476

I agree with everything you said. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is probably my favorite horror movie of all time.

Unfortunately, I can't stand any of the sequels.
>>
>>84857664

Contrarians, dude.
>>
>>84857739

I think Nightmare on Elm Street is fairly comfy.
>>
>>84862247
What I like most about Scream are the more subtle bits. E.g. when Sidney is first talking to the killer on the phone she says she doesn't like horror movies, killer replies "why not, too scared?" and she says something like, "No, what's the point they're all the same some stupid killer's stalking some big breasted girl who can't act, she's running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door, it's insulting." Then when the scene happens she actually does the exact same thing lol.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWOTF7ORhGo

>>84863108
Agreed. She looked really great in the first, other ones she was just okay. She became my biggest crush when I first saw it back in '96.
>>
>>84862247
The acting by the class clown dude near the end is fucking amazing. And the twist of who did it is surprising as shit 1st time. I love that scene but if you havent seen it dont get spoiled

>Which horror movie is most comfy?

Dawn of the Dead, during when they're all just chilling out and enjoying the mall to themselves.

Plus the pie fight, Dawn of the Dead barely qualifies as horror to me because there's too much comedy and lightheartedness to it so it just has no bite IMO.

Goosebumps movie, The Gate is very tame, The Lady in White, Something Wicked this way Comes, The monster club though it's a little blue in some scenes, kinda like the goonies.

Thank you for the recommendations though, I will watch The Gate

>Hooper fucked up by turning it into a straight up comedy for the sequel.
I give the guy a break there because I think even he knew he could never live up to the perfection of the first movie. So he just said fuck it and made the sequel a weird comedy.

i watched the documentary and they said that when they were shooting the dinner scene it was incredibly hot, and everyone was sweating, Gunnar Hansen wasn't allowed to wash his costume for the whole film so he smelt like shit and everyone was about to puke.

It's a mixed bag. The fact that so little takes place in Manhattan sucks but it did also give us shit like the Realest Nigga of All Time Julius.

Dude had one of the neatest executions in the series. Just got his head straight punched off. I thought the cruise wasn't as bad as some say but given the title I get you.
>>
>>84867709
The Head Punch is one of only two kills I use in the new game. And yeah the title was such a cock tease but it's still easily better than 5 or 7, maybe even 4.
>>
>>84867743
I thought it was neat they actually added NES Jason into that. I played the beta, but my computer could hardly play it. Which is fine since I play older titles mostly.

You can't rewatch it often. But every couple of years, it's great.

First Scream is great. Second one is still okay, but already a bit repetitive but they still got mileage out of it. Third one's shit and surprisingly the fourth was pretty okay again. The TV series looked so shit I never even bothered with it.

He did Scooby doo. Mostly done small roles in TV shows recently, including the Good Wife, Bosch and Twin Peaks S3.

Even if the Babadook is a meme, I don't care. In my opinion, it's the most distinguished and ambitious film the horror genre has seen since Alien and the Evil Dead.

Halloween is good, but the Babadook wins for density and originality.

>>Which horror movie is most comfy?
>Dawn of the Dead
Couldn't agree more. It's the ultimate comfy zombie film with comic book gore and a fun atmosphere in the mall. My favorite of the trilogy, although the other two are great as well. It's weird how Romero could adapt himself to 3 different eras (60s, 70s, 80s) but went completely off the rails in the 00s.

>Excuse to watch a bunch of horror movies
>Pumpkin beer
>Monster cereals come back for the month
>Weather just starts to cool off a little, without being too cold
>Annual tradition of marathoning Monster Madness

October has leapfrogged July as my favorite month as I've gotten older, for sure. This October also has the added bonus of being when the new Mario and South Park games release, so it should be a good one. Shame there's not going to be anymore Monster Madness, but in hindsight, James has sort of been phoning it in for the last couple of years anyway. Sequel-a-thon was the last truly great one.
>>
>>84856822

Religion isn't what made The Exorcist scary. It was the fucking M A K E U P. Why don't more people understand this? There's a reason Reagan pops up in those screamers. I'll tell you why: her face is scary. The spiderwalk, the head turning, the tongue - that's why people are/were afraid. Not a single person thought they'd get possessed and their head would twist around.
>>
>>84870725
I think it was a combination of fantastic makeup, sound design, and overall direction that gave the whole thing an overbearing sense of dread.

Yeah, a lot of videos were just sounded like a Wikipedia article without any of the anecdotes he'd throw in there

I just want you to know that everyone here thinks you are really brave and we are proud of you.
>>
>>84871025
Plus, there was the year before last, where half the videos were just James and Mike awkwardly stream-of-consciousness talking about movies.

Then, last year, he couldn't even be bothered to cut any clips of the movies being discussed together, so it was just James sitting there, with a boring static shot of the movie in the corner. I would really be surprised if any of that was scripted either. I think James has started to forget that scripting, researching, and editing is where his strengths lie.

That is such a perfect shot. Legitimately startling and upsetting. And you'd think there'd be so many other films with shots trying to do something like that but not so perfectly and effectively. And the music was just right too, and the gauzy, breesey beauty of late 70s suburbs that suited horror atmospherics so well for some reason.

How is Halloween 3?

I know fanboys are very salty about the fact that Michael Myers is not in it, but is it a comfy movie, if you don't see it as part of the Halloween franchise?
