what went wrong?
>>
everything after clerks
>>
>>84847550
he discovered the internet and became a fag
>>
He wanted to be a kino director instead of making a funny movie every three years or so.

I had good hopes when he made Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, but then he.. didn't do anything like that again.
just fucking talking to paying crowds about his hemorrhoids and Jay's crack problem..

Why Kevin? why not just make Jay & Silent Bob Go to Mexico or something.
just fucking milk that shit, Cheech & Chong style.

Hell, he could have made a Jay & Silent Bob meet Cheech & Chong.

tl;dr he wanted to make kino instead of stoner comedies.

>against all odds, make a hit indie comedy
>influence comedic film and discussion of pop culture for a decade
>fans rabidly defend you from everything
>Refused to listen to critics because he made films "for the fans"
>the fans eventually want change, but he never learned how to better himself
>pander more and more to an ever shrinking demographic of Generation X slackers
>Gen x fans grow up, buy houses, move to the suburbs, have kids
>circle of fans shrink
>doesn't know how to grow as a filmmaker because he never listened to critics

Add in smoking more weed than Snoop Dogg on a Jamaican cruise on a daily basis and there you have it.

He's pretty much the Dobson of film: the ability to be good hindered by the inability to take criticism.

He is the film definition of "failed potential"

His daughter is frumpy but he has been lusting after her best-friend since grade school.
>>
>>84847678
all of the View Askew movies are great though
>>
just keep watching clerks for the rest of your life
>>
>>84848096
>doesn't know how to grow as a filmmaker because he never listened to critics
so you telling me artists "grow" by sucking cock of people who didn't ever create anything? if you own a business, would you listen to advice of random janitor negro on the street about how to manage it?
>>
>>84849031
t. guy working on his screenplay for the last 5 years and 3 months ago cindy finally convinced him to show her his version 56 draft but she didn't really like it
>>
>>84849031
Imagine being this dense lads. Literally the definition of the posts I love to hide. Total retardation.

He's the worst when he plays it safe. Clerks was a great blue-collar indie film that many can relate to, even in the development of it. Kevin Smith was a symbol of the everyday geek with a rented Cam that made it big.

He worked from what he knew and created a subculture of Nerdy films that were often 4th-wall breaking commentaries on consumerism and anti-hollywood.

He was always dancing on a razor thin budget and it really only took one terrible flop to destroy his confidence in himself. Jersey Girl. He lost funding for a bit. He went on college tours of self-deprecation and celebrity gossip. Lost Ben's friendship in the process. Re-invented himself as a film-maker that was in touch with the fans. Clerks II comes out and while it doesn't maintain the tone of the original, it's hilarious and a nice send off to his old self.
Tries to go mainstream. Blatantly makes Cop-Out for the sole purpose of trying to play it safe and get tons of money. Fails.

Reinvents himself and creates a wholly original poignant thriller about a Christian Cult (Redstate) and loses faith in himself once more at the ending. Doesn't have the balls to take it all the way. Ends up talking about his wife's taint and engaging in nepotism in hopes of making Johnny Depp his new Ben. Cashes in on podcast, tv-series and shitty derivative "joke-concept" films that even drive his most loyal fanbase away. Promises of Clerks III, but at this point he's too greedy to pay the actors what they're worth for his shitty script that he wrote whilst high.
>>
>>84847550
He stopped making jay and silent bob movies, I don't care about him in real life but almost everything he's done since strike back has ranged from mediocre to garbage
>>
>>84847550

Nothing really. He's just some dumbass from New Jersey who had a little ambition and got lucky. He's a massive overachiever.
>>
>>84847925
I liked Jay and Silent Bob's adventures like Dogma and Strike Back.
Why the fuck did he stop this shit?
>>
>>84849031
>by sucking cock of people who didn't ever create anything

Not that guy but you're always the worst critic of your own work, it's always been that way
>>
>>84847550
He started talking.
>>
>>84849473
Nah smodcast and evening with kevin smith were really funny and interesting, It's only the last 7 or 8 years where he's become insufferable and uninteresting
>>
>>84847550
he is a comedy writer and he went away from comedy to make something different. When he went away to make the different films he forgot that great horror has atmosphere and you kinda have to build the bullshit world to make it believable, also you kinda have to be a nutty to create great cinematography.

So creating a horror the first act has to be seamless and establish the rules of the horrible-thing that is to come or is coming, he forgot to do that in both of the horror films he made. He could have used sound as an atmospheric world builder but did not do it for some reason.
>>
>>84849646
Tusk was almost a decent horror film, if we would've taken it seriously. It ended up becoming a worse human centipede. I HATED the weird ass Johnny Depp french Canadian detective. Canadian jokes were never funny, yet he's making a whole trilogy about Canada. Basically, remove all the Johnny Depp shit and that weird sepia tone flashback with Michael Parks acting retarded. Rewrite a protagonist that's sympathetic, instead of the most unlikable guy ever conceived. Tusk could've been great, but he just wanted to do his anti-hollywood dick wagging, refusing to listen to criticism. Yoga Hosers is the result of being surrounded by yes men nerds that won't tell him to stop.

This is how I know you made anything worth merit
>>
>>84849841
I'm thinking about both Red State and Tusk. Tusk had the general problem with making the protagonist unlikable and not making any reddening factors to him, so instead of feeling sorry in the end one kinda laughs. Plus there is no atmospheric sound and the story-telling is so dumb one don't buy the bullshit that he is selling.

If he would have wanted to make a decent to good horror film, it was just watching something from the 70s or some Japanese ones, one can see that sound is a heavy factor to make the atmosphere larger than life and making the first act seamless so you buy the rules and the bullshit.
>>
Kevin Smith would have benefited greatly with a collaborator. He directs, writes, AND edits every movie he made, the only thing he didn't write is Cop Out.

Even Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino had someone else edit their films. Editor is the one who gets the film to flow properly, Smith likes to add in a bunch of aimless scenes that really didn't need to be in the final cut.

It works in Clerks, because Clerks feels like a Fly on the Wall movie of two schmucks goofing off at their menial pay stores.
>>
>>84850167

Isn't Scott Mosier his editor?

From the podcasts he seems like a good dude but not the best editor, though it can't be easy trying to shape Kevin's dumb plots into something that makes sense
>>
>>84850096
I agree with the lack of sound. The first part of Tusk is a series of shock-jock and YT generation non-sequiturs. The moment when Michael Parks comes on screen, he begins to sell the plot a bit more. I think Kevin Smith was trying to make some parody of the most dangerous game at that point. It's quite obvious that Smith leans on dick jokes to compensate for his shit writing. (Tusk and Yoga Hosers greatly suffer from this.) The irony is, Kevin Smith could've easily tapped into the mainstream dollar if he would've attempted to give it a serious twist - Normies love Paranormal Activity low budget shit, as long as it has jump scares and red-herrings. I think Kevin's ego gets in the way, where he creates a facade of giving what he thinks his fans want and self-sabotaging his work in the process. His diehards won't give a shit what he makes, but I bet they'd be happy to see him break through to mainstream once more. If he would just hire an editor, he could've easily had a cape-shit film under his belt by now in an era when they're basically giving them away to any director with a couple of indie film credits.

Yes, and I have. He's actually Cajun though It's worked out pretty well for us too. Don't underestimate people.
>>
>>84847550
Did well out of something that could have just sank into obscurity. I'm no fan and really don't like people who don't show self control and stop being gluttonous pigs.
In your mind he could of went on to do what? Be one of the great film makers of all time?
Well obviously he never because he just can't
He's got cash flowing in I bet and here you are upset on his behalf when he doesn't give a fuck because he has his weed and blocks of glow in the dark Ameripleb cheese to munch on.
>>
>>84847925
>tl;dr he wanted to make kino instead of stoner comedies.
Which is funny, since he wasn't actually a stoner when he was doing the stoner comedies, but was when he started to think he was some great artist.

>>
First movie was too big of a success, became addicted to the critical praise, threw a temper tantrum when said praise was no longer there, became too big of a hippie, his "why not?" philosophy makes no room for constructive criticism, doesn't spend enough time on his scripts.
>>
>>84850341
He can only break into the mainstream if he makes a capeshit film and goes back to general comedy and lose the "film maker" ego.
>>
>>84849031
Thanks, Kevin! Is Mallrats 2 still happening?
>>
I unironicall love Zack and Miri Make A Porno.
>>
>>84852674
I could see him working out well doing an indie capeshit film...Mystery Men, Reid Fleming World's Toughest Milkman, Flaming Carrot, or S.C.U.D., one of those types of alternate culture indie comics that were big in the 90s.

Actually a Kevin Smith Flaming Carrot period piece set in 1996 would be pretty kino.
>>
>>84852907
I do agree, the kinomatography would be amazing.

some guy on youtube made a point that Kevin Smith would have worked better in tv than film.

Clerks was a concept that would have worked better as an HBO comedy rather than a film seeing how "Episodic" the movie was
