It's the only spiderman films that had new york city treat him right. A large part of the character is that life sucks for peter, but he's still able to make us laugh. He still endures, perseveres, and ultimately does the right thing, no matter how much he's punished for it.

The other movies skip this.

Much more character. NYC is people and they spent a lot of time adding little cameos and funny/interesting side characters with one or two lines to make it feel like a genuine experience. Fight scenes were tense like early transporter films, relying on pure action and tact over cinematics and music. Also j Jonah was the best casting ever.

It's a simple answer but it's so true. Although he worked from a wonderful script, Raimi is a fantastic director, and Spider-Man 2 is exactly the film he wanted to make.

The early 2000s was a pretty great time to be a film fan when you had indie horror masters Raimi and Peter Jackson handling 200 million movie franchises. I feel like if Spider-Man 3 had turned out well Raimi's films would be a lot more widely remembered. Unfortunately people seemed to think the sillyness of the dance scene is what ruined it (it wasn't), and then started dismissing the other two as silly.

We will never witness a character in the MCU that realizes that having super powers and always doing the right thing actually fucking sucks, decides to quit for himself and his personal life, but then returns and ultimately understands that the most important part of being a hero is sacrificing for those you love.

Goddammit Raimi. You were so ahead of the genre before it even got started.

SM3 is now officially the Star Wars prequels of Spider-Man. That movie was garbage, everyone knew it was garbage, yet suddenly all this SM3 apologia has come out of fucking nowhere since Homecoming's release.
>>
>>84846346
Its garbage compared to SM2. Its still miles ahead of TASM1,2 and HC because its actually directed by a competent film maker and not just an errand guy for the marketing committee department.

Most of the complains about the movie are "not muh X", which might be valid on /co/ but certainly not on /tv/.

The movie while extremely flawed does a well job closing all the storylines. Specially the Harry-Peter one, which maybe you dont realize it but its the big arc that spans through the trilogy. The trilogy is not about MJ and Peter, but about Harry and Peter.
>>
>>84846346

SM3 is bloated. There are 3 villains, 4 if you include the "dark side" of Peter/Spider-Man, that have to be overcome.

None of them get the appropriate amount of development and screen time. At the very least, Sandman should have been cut.
>>
>>84846649

This, an actual auteur making films according to his own design and style, rather than having to fit it to a cookie-cutter format.
>>
>>84846524
My big problems are that it's bloated and they retconned the Uncle Ben stuff from the first movie.
>>
>>84843466
Maybe they're retractable like cat claws
none of this is real, stop trying to find logic in it
>>
>>84846680
Nigga Venom was the one that needed cut. Eddie as well and change it so that Peter and Gwen have more of a solid friendship and MJ dies at the end, leaving room for Gwen to catch Peter in grieving to comfort him, leading to a relationship in the next movie with Eddie and Venom being introduced, which would lead to another movie with Carnage, ending with him killing Gwen and ending the Raimi verse for good. Would have been a better end.
>>
>>84846680
Dunno, I feel they are all pretty well established.

You got the family drama with Marko
The rivalry between Eddie and Peter
Harry plot had 2 movies developing

Sure, more scenes would be great, but I dont think the movie would actually improve that much.
>>
>>84846685
That would just be a sticky mess.
>>
>>84843748
Kubrick (himself of Jewish descent) frequently removed references to the Jewishness of characters in the novels he adapted.[9] In the case of Eyes Wide Shut, Frederic Raphael (who is also Jewish) wanted to keep the Jewish background of the protagonists, but Kubrick insisted that they should be "vanilla" Americans, without any details that would arouse any presumptions. The director added that Bill should be a "Harrison Ford-ish goy" (though Ford's mother was Jewish), and created the surname of Harford as an allusion to the actor.[10] This is reflected in the way the film's Bill Harford is taunted by college students when going home in the morning. In the film, Bill is taunted with homophobic slurs. In the novella, these boys are recognized to be members of an anti-Semitic college fraternity.[9][11] Kubrick's co-screenwriter, Frederic Raphael, in an introduction to a Penguin Classics edition of Dream Story, writes "Fridolin is not declared to be a Jew, but his feelings of cowardice, for failing to challenge his aggressor, echo the uneasiness of Austrian Jews in the face of Gentile provocation."[12]
>>
>>84846702
True, it's bloated but I personally wouldn't consider the Uncle Ben retcon to be a big flaw. Yes, a few characters needed cut from the movie but it still has it's moments.
>>
Reminder that Sony mails showed interest in either a crossover or just a plain SM sequel with Raimi.

Eventually we will get SM4 WITH RAIMI when they are out of ideas.

They will probably adapt Reign and take advantage of the aged actors.

Frederic Raphael, who co-authored the Eyes Wide Shut script with Kubrick, recalled that the director once remarked that "Hitler was right about almost everything", and insisted that any trace of Jewishness be expunged from the Eyes Wide Shut script. Kubrick's bizarre relationship to his own ethnicity deeply troubled Raphael, a fellow Jew. Raphael was further puzzled over Kubrick's cryptic praise for Hitler, unable to decide if Kubrick was jesting. Raphael was equally puzzled by Kubrick's trashing of Schindler's List. After Raphael mentioned Schindler’s List, Kubrick replied: “Think that's about the Holocaust? That was about success, wasn't it? The Holocaust is about six million people who get killed. 'Schindler's List’ is about 600 who don’t."[4] Kubrick's friend Steven Spielberg, the director of the film, disbelievingly responded that he "didn't recognize the voice of Stanley" in Raphael's interviews.[5]

>>84850135
Technically yes. It not only deletes and adds some scenes, but it rearranges some scenes in a different order that still works. For instance, Peter's big fight with Harry at his mansion happens after the "emo Peter" montage instead of right before it. Also the bit where Harry's butler comes in right at the end and tells Harry what really happened to his dad is cut completely and replaced with a scene where Harry looks at an old photo of he, MJ, and Peter together and that's what convinces him to help.
>>
>>84850135
Totally. The only con is the pacing is a bit off.

The movie dragged too much when Peter watched the 114 minutes version of Triumph des Willens. The movie was already 2 hours long, by the time Triumph des Willens ends playing you practically forgot about the Spider-man movie.

I was thinking the other day about this, and let's assume they didn't want to hire another old guy as ben (or young I guess unless a young aunt may liked other dudes), they could have done a sort of very quick dream sequence where instead of just seeing his own face in the puddle Pete saw Aunt may dressed in black standing in front of two gravestones, one for Uncle ben and now one for Pete, and that's what gives him strength.

I will never understand hate for spider man 3 . It is literally same movie like last 2. It has pretty good scenes like harry, sandman, venom in church, his jealous etc. Dont get why it is so hated by internet contratrians

Also wont get why Sony didnt made 4 with or without raimi

> It is literally same movie like last 2.

Not really. The feeling is similar, but it isn't as well put together. It's too bloated. Contrarian behavior would be loving it, since even normies hate it because Venom isn't a guy with big muscles. I think it's okay and almost always watch it when it's on TV, it's fun as fuck.

Simmons as Jameson. How come that role fitted him so well ?

I don't know, but it's the best cape casting to this day.

Patrick Stewart as Xavier was also excellent cape casting.

3 just had way too much going on with the 3 villains, and personal life going on.
Sandman's story was good, Harry had good scenes. Venom was complete shit.

What I kinda wish happened, though kinda dumb, is for Raimi to just change Sandman into Venom, but keeping the same story.
Even the same plot where he sneaks into a science place can be the same, just make it them experimenting on some of the alien goo.
That way we don't have fucking Topher Grace, and the movie isn't just Peter fighting bad guys for a large portion of the movie.

It's just serendipity--not lucky casting, it's good casting. He's a happy collection of traits, features and talents that suited the character perfectly. This kind of thing happens when you look for the right person for the role instead the person to tick all the right boxes on your pandering cheat sheet.

It has the same themes as 2 where he isn't sure about what he wants to be, so it feels like a rehash or a worse version of 2.

Sandman stuff was cool but making him being involved in Uncle Ben's death was unnecessary and letting him go at the end felt like a shitty ending.

I unironically liked emo Peter though, it was pure Sam Raimi trash

SM3 was when audiences absolutely could take no whimsy in their capeshit, when you couldn't make anything unusual or dreamlike. That is why the Bane Plane was the last memorably quoted scene in the genre although its now 5 years old.

I never understand people who get violent hatred over these silly scenes. They always stand the test of time whereas the serious "true to the characters" scenes always blend in to history.

People will only remember Martha, or the quips in Suicide Squad, we hate these scenes but in the end they are the most shared and even beloved.

They were movies first, then a movie about a superhero second and franchise third.

Movies now are, franchise first, superhero movie second, actual movie third.
>>
1)The sound editing and score. It creates tense and you actually care about the characters and feel that they are in danger.
2)The humor is genuine and light-hearted. No cynical quips and pseudowits.

There is equal balance between drama and action scenes (which are awesome and the best part of these movies)

There was nothing better out. If the MCU started in 05, Raimi would've been shut the fuck down.
