The main reason this happened is because they were so insistent on using this ending they filmed way back in the first season, before they knew how big the show would get. When the show started it really did seem like it was going for a Robin ending but it ended up going in a totally different direction from how they planned it. What's really vexing is how little self-awareness they had to realize that the original ending would not go over well at that point. Hell, I don't know in what universe killing off the mother with a throwaway line of dialogue right at the end makes any sense, especially after they spent time developing her as an actual character. If they wanted to kill her, her death should have been actually shown.
