I really hate this version of Flash Thompson. And not because he's a pooinloo, but because his characterization and casting miss the entire narrative point. Flash Thompson is meant to show how much Peter Parker changes once he gets his powers. Flash is meant to be bigger than Peter, faster than Peter, stronger than Peter. So once Peter gets his powers and is able to beat the fuck out of Flash without even trying, this shows the distance between Spiderman and normal people, even young and extremely fit people. It gives Peter both a sense of the power he's been granted as well as his first real triumph over the soul-crushing betaness and nerdom that was his previous existence.
The writers really didn't give a shit about any story structure independent of the Marvel formula. Instead of trying to use Flash or even another stand-in for Flash as a measuring stick for Peter's powers, they just assumed having any character and naming him Flash Thompson was going to be good enough. Because they're "honoring the original material" while also "taking it in a bold new direction." Meaning that all the original characters aren't actually in the movies. Just completely different characters, with completely different motivations and actions, which happen to have the same names.

TL;DR having a fat rich desi shitbag who trolls peter isn't the same as showing Peter's powers overcoming a brick shithouse football player who used to be able to make him cry one-handed.

Thing is, even if they wanted to do a "modern" version of Flash where he just cyberbullies him, Flash in Homecoming never actually seemed superior to Parker in any way. Outside of YOU SAY PENIS nobody seemed to like him. The entire team stood up for Peter, the principal likes Peter, even one of the random teachers made fun of Flash in class for being wrong about something Peter knew.
Outside of in-universe popularity early Flash is also characterized by being a huge Spiderfag, showing that deep down he actually does like Peter even if he didn't know it, hinting at his future growth. Nothing was even attempted to make him even remotely fleshed out, the movie content with leaving him to be shit on for half of his scenes without any redeeming qualities. I'd be okay with making him an all-around bad person too, but he didn't actually do anything that bad either.
He was just some mild prick instead of an actual problem or an actual character.
