Was this movie meant to be an introspective look showing how the audience enjoys watching violence, killing, and dehumanisation of Germans through the lens of the Basterds, just as the Nazis are accused of doing to the Jews; or did Tarantino just want to make a mindless violent gorey revenge-porn about killing nazis?

Understanding this scene is the key to understanding the entire movie.
>"Watching Donnie beat Nazis to death is the closest we ever get to going to the movies."
In this moment, The Basterds see/hear the exact same thing as the audience, with the exception of the ridiculous fanfare. This entire sequence screams gory revenge porn fantasy, at least until a crucial moment when the Nazi officer states that he was awarded his medals for bravery, and not simply for the grossly oversimplified platitude of "killing jews." Just think about how the scene would play out if the roles were reversed. Evil Nazi with baseball bat points to medals and says "Did you get those for killing Nazis?" The Jewish soldier would reply "Bravery" and the audience would start to cry over how brave and heroic he is. Of course, this wouldn't really play out very well in today's political climate. Even if this is a gross oversimplification, I think the idea that history is written by the victor comes into play here. As long as you're on the winning side, it's okay to make these gory revenge fantasies, and this scene best embodies Tarantino's critique of this notion while simultaneously indulging himself with the aforementioned ridiculous fanfare.

Fuck off cunt, it's an important theme of a movie. Thousands of movies touch on history and/or politics, just because a movie's topic involves politics doesn't mean you can tell anyone who wants to discuss the movie to F off to /pol/
the first, the carved swastika in both the in-universe propaganda film and the film itself as the basterd's calling card is not an accident

Can't dehumanise Germans any more than they did themselves. And there's nothing wrong with enjoying watching the most evil people in history get what's coming to them.
>just as the Nazis are accused of doing to the Jews
Accused by the overwhelming preponderance of evidence.
>or did Tarantino just want to make a mindless violent gorey revenge-porn about killing nazis?
It's important that we remember how nationalism and antisemitism can reduce people on both sides to unnecessary violence.

>most evil people in history
Belgians in the Congo?
Khmer Rouge?
Bolshevik NKVD?
The British Empire?
Americans in Vietnam?
ISIS?
