Yeah. He was in a band with Craig Ferguson. Murray Gold writes out sheet music for Capaldi to play in the show, and he actually plays it. Even the theme tune bit in 'Before the Flood'. But because of acoustic issues and Capaldi having to concentrate on his acting, he records the guitar seperately/ It actually is him playing, but in a booth afterwards.

honestly, giving the Master that ending, followed by a christmas special with the current doctor meeting the first doctor lmao. They'd meet daleks (who else?) and go to different points in history just like in 'The Chase' (gotta have a bit of Time Travel in there). The final moments would be the Doctor getting in his Tardis, and saying "It's far from being all over!" or a similar line. There'd be a voiceover similar to at the end of Survival, over the Tardis flying off. The final theme tune would play over a montage of each doctor. The final frame would say "Thanks to everyone who's ever contributed to the show in any way. And thanks to all of you at home as well."

It is worth watching series 1-3, but never series 4. Series 3 actually ends in a fitting way for Torchwood anyway.

If you must skip series 1 and 2, series 3 is pretty standalone anyway (Children of Earth was initially nothing to do with Torchwood, just a project RTD wanted to do. He made it a Torchwood series later)

So I picked up The Last Adventure recently, and was wondering if there's anything I should listen to beforehand. I've listened up to 38 in the Main Range, so no Flip, no Constance, although I've heard this is her first story but I thought that was Criss-Cross, and no 6/Charley, but have heard up to Neverland with 8/Charley.

You can jump in with no problems really. All you need to know is that Charley is travelling with the Sixth Doctor. They don't make any references to previous adventures.

Constance's first story technically is Criss-Cross, but The Last Adventure came out before that, so this was many people's first experience with her.

As for Flip, again no prior knowledge is needed. She's a young companion from the 21st century travelling with the Sixth Doctor.

The only knowledge you need going in is who the Valeyard is.

I remember seeing the trailer for series 1 and there was the clip of Nine saying "JUST THIS ONCE" with an ecstatic grin on his face and his hands glowing yellow from the nanogenes. I remember thinking maybe he'd gone insane with power from whatever the yellow light was and decided to massacre everyone "just this once" because he saves everyone all the time.

RTD specifically said he never edited Chibnall scripts. Chibnall was basically in charge of Torchwood (especially during S2, read RTD's book and you'll see he had very little to do with it) and wrote eight Torchwood episodes. I think that's more than enough to get a clear idea of his writing.

I own the amended Writer's Tale (even referenced it for some uni things once, even taking Doctor Who aside it's a fantastic look at how creative minds work, TV production, the psychology behind procrastination, etc.) and I pointed out that Chibnall "shadow showran" Torchwood during S2. But I concede the point, you're right that it's fair to take it as a good sample of his writing considering how involved he was in it. However, I really do you think you're underplaying how tremendous the difference is between writing a show of your own, and writing (or even running) a show of someone else's. You could argue Doctor Who won't really be his show, since it's >50 years old, but it will be a new Doctor, new era, and it's as his as it could ever be, certainly far more than Torchwood (which had a set premise, set cast, etc, from RTD) ever was.
