>Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming fell just a bit shy of the $120 million mark it was looking like it would hit after Friday estimates, but nevertheless the webslinger still delivered a stellar opening, delivering the third largest opening weekend of the year so far. Additionally, Lionsgate and Amazon's The Big Sick delivered strong numbers in its moderate expansion ahead of next weekend's wide release.

>As of Sunday morning, the latest cinematic depiction of the webbed-hero, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” is looking at a $117 million opening from 4,348 locations. $10.6 million of the domestic total came from 392 Imax screens. That’s a huge win for Sony, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Studios for the film, which cost roughly $175 million to produce. The anticipated opening weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90 million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously pegged it at $80 million.
>>
>>84777613

>This Spider-Man cost before P&A a similar amount to other titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: $175M. That’s more than a third cheaper than Sony’s previous title in the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which even with combined theatrical P&A and production costs of $430M saw a profit of $70M-plus after all global TV and home entertainment monies were counted.

>Literally Whos of the Galaxy
Well, since we're looking at domestic box office. those literally whos made more than Batman & Superman together as well.

I'm guessing that the huge friday/saturday drop was due to the previews being counted as part of the friday box office, and therefore, making it look bigger than it actually was.
Still 120 seems kinda low for Spider-Man in the height of the season, and without much strong competition at this point. I would've expected it to open at least 50 mil. above Wonder Woman.
It's still probably gonna be huge worldwide.

Thats because Disney aren't making movies anymore, they are trying to make cultural events, something that you have to see because everyone else is going to see it, and all everyone will talk about it is seeing it, kind of thing. They have used the rights of these pop culture icons to create a self reinforcing 'cult of nerdom' whereby experiencing these 'events' allows people to essentially prove their nerdiness through things like quoting the movie or making memes about them.

It's pretty bad when you can only get an additional $30mil by adding fantastic critic ratings, the biggest actor in capeshit in RDJ and Marvel/Disney drone ticket sales. The fact that it dropped by 27% in the second day means that the first day was hugely frontloaded with fanatics.

Well, considering that Wonder Woman opened to 103 after the shitfest that BvS and SS were, and this one has Iron Man and the MCU brand to support it, I'd say it's pretty underwhelming. It's Spider-Man and Iron Man opening lower than Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

I mean, it's not a bomb or anything, and it's gonna make very good money worldwide, but it feels like it should've been bigger.
>>
>movie on track to earn 300-400m domestic / 400m-500m worldwide

>was poisoned by three bad entries
No way this Kevin Feige garbage beats Raimi's SM3 in quality.
>>
>>84780815
Not the point. The fact that people are willing to see a Spidey movie at all is a miracle
>>
>>84780768
>>84780815
To be fair, not for Raimi's fault, but the movie was kinda messy. It's his unique style that still salvages it

But anyway, I'd still say it's a misconception because despite everything SM3 made more money than 2. The downfall started with the TASM series

http://chinafilminsider.com/foreign-films-in-china-how-does-it-work/

>In a World Trade Organization agreement between China and the U.S. last year, China said it would pay foreign film studios 25 percent of their box-office revenue, up from the 13 percent to 17 percent range in the previous agreement. China Film Group initially said no additional fees or taxes would come out of that 25 precent, but for reasons that are unclear it changed its mind and introduced an additional levy on all box-office payments. Hollywood studios have so far refused to pay up because, they say, the new tax wasn’t part of the WTO agreement. As a result, China has been holding box-office payments hostage in what’s been a silent international standoff that has stretched on for months.
