His hate boner for Gawker came from two points:

1. Gawker and it's ilk had long declared war on Silicon Valley, with Sam "bullying is A-OK when WE do it" Biddle doxing low and mid-level Silicon Valley rank and file employees caught doing normal shit that they could spin to present everyone in Silicon Valley as 1%er shits that were "ruining things for SJW types" (like buying a house or their kids an expensive birthday gift).

Thiel disliked this because it was killing morale at companies and smearing employees is bad for business.

2. Them outing him EXPLICITLY to punish him for his conservative/libertarian views.

Gawker was one of the main pillars in the SJW attack army.

And while Hulk didn't kill ALL of Gawker (the equally corrupt and pure evil spin-offs sites like Jezebel and Kotaku were sold off by Gawker to save them from being killed with the main website), it basically was a major fucking blow to the SJW war machine.

Not to mention, and not to defend the documentary but it is kind of true so it should be noted, that it created the perfect groundwork for people with money to kill the SJW hate machine. IE find people who have been wronged by the SJW smear merchants and basically fund their lawsuits against their tormentors, which they could never hoped to have afforded to do on their own due to people like Gawker being able to avoid justice due to their ability to delay and throw enough money at their lawyers to begger their victims before they even see the inside of the courts via motions and delays and shit.
