This.

>neomorph > xenomorph

That thing was solid nightmare fuel. The sequence where it's picking off crewmembers in the open was way more gripping than the over-the-top climax sequence.

Last five minutes were a nice twist, tho.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. I really appreciated that Ridley went back to making a fairly straightforward monster movie, instead of the lazy philosophical piece that was Prometheus. And as a sci-fi horror, Covenant was pretty okay. The characters were all stupid, but that's basically par for the course with horror; the only thing that really bothered me were the weird contradictions to the past movies relating to how xenomorphs work, grow, and how old they apparently are.

>>84763874
>The sequence where it's picking off crewmembers in the open was way more gripping than the over-the-top climax sequence.
This so much. That sequence was the best thing that's been in an Alien movie in decades.
>>
>>84763966
>the only thing that really bothered me were the weird contradictions to the past movies relating to how xenomorphs work, grow, and how old they apparently are.

Well i interpreted it as them still being unfinished as David is still tinkering with them.

Prometheus had an alien race. Covenant literally killed that thread because fuck you
>>
>>84763887
Yeah David as the villain was great. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
>>
>>84763992
I'm guessing Scott figured people would leave it at that, but there are some inconsistencies. The biggest one being the ship in Alien, which held xenomorph eggs and was supposed to have been there for a very long time (enough to be fossilized). If David created xenopmorphs, it's basically impossible for an engineer to fly a ship full of eggs to a planet millions of years ago.

The chestbursters also looked completely different, and it seems like the neomorphs and xenomorph grew way more quickly.
>>
>>84763541
FUCKING FUCK MADE NO FUCKING SENSE.

I hope you are browsing THIS VERY thread mister "Sir" Ridley Scott, your movie is TRASH of the TRASHIEST quality.
>>
>>84764112

It's been a while since i last saw Alien but did they say the ship was millions of years old?

The chest bursters looking so different is what makes me think they're not the same as the finished Aliens. Or Maybe Scott is just trying to retcon them or something
>>
>>84764267
>did they say the ship was millions of years old?
They said that everything had been fossilized or something like that
>>
>>84764267
>"Alien life form. Looks like it's been dead a long time. Fossilized. Looks like it's growing out of the chair. Bones are bent outward, like he exploded from inside."

It takes a lot longer than 18 years for something to fossilize. Plus, there's the issue of an engineer flying the ship when David had already genocided all of them ten years before creating the xenomorph.
>>
>>84764360
>Plus, there's the issue of an engineer flying the ship when David had already genocided all of them ten years before creating the xenomorph.
In general I agree with you but I thought that it was just engineers' colony
>>
>>84764244
>"Sir"
lol rude.
>>
>>84764360
I'm not so sure those were engineers at all. They were worshipping the arrival of the ship, so they could be a colony or something like that, that look at the engineers as gods.
>>
>>84763541
>Why anyone hasn't told me it was so shit
We've been having threads after threads complaining about how bad it is since it was released.

>You said it was better than the Promethes
For some reason you managed to find the 3-5 dumbasses you genuinely believe so but still miss all the ranting about Covenant?
>>
>>84764538
Look at this thread. Most of ppl here liked it more than Prometheus
>>
>>84764408
>>84764493
The end of Prometheus specifically says that they're going to the engineer's homeworld. Maybe Scott changed his mind, but David never says anything about failing to reach their destination; going by the past movie, they're supposed to be on the original engineer planet.

And I assumed the crowd was in awe at the ship because it had probably been a long time since one had come back, especially the one that was on Prometheus, if they had a way of knowing it was that ship.
>>
>>84764563

Just like with other series that go back with prequels, the tech matchup with the Covenent and the Nostromo or even Sulaco just seems wrong. You need these shitty motion detectors yet they can just instantly pinpoint the creature on the Covenant with perfect HD cameras. I get it's a fancy new ship, but the lived in future is what works for these films.

>>
>absolutely fascinating premise of human-made life form that wants to create life of its own but ends up with murderous abominations

I also hated that David created the OG xenomorph (which is the perfect predator), as well as how it grew into adult size in literally seconds because fucking space magic.
>>
>>84765858

>>
>>84765985
There is no proof that the aliens in Alien 1-4 didn't grow that fast.
>>
>>84765914
Yup. Dont know about quaility thou
>>
>>84765889

The first Alien movie, the xenomorph needed quite some time to grow into a full adult. In Covenant it might as well could have happened in a minute. Besides it's pretty jarring. Having a stupidly overpowered monster makes it difficult to take it seriously, compared to a creature that you know is hiding somewhere, biding it's time to grow strong enough to fuck your shit up.

They actually could have made a scene where David protects the baby xeno, it might have been pretty cool.
>>
>>84765655
people that dumb wouldn't stand a chance against me even, the point is the less competent the characters are, the less impressive and intimidating the antagonist seems as he's overwhelming them.

i know in Aliens they were dumb zerg, but the fact the admittedly ragtag mercs couldn't handle them was scary, since they were impressively equipped and moved as a unit

Visuals and spacefaring stuff was pretty nice, and the Fassbenders. Basically anything that didn't involve Aliens

Baby Alien looked dumb, the characters actions weren't plausible and nothing made sense, Prometheus closure was underwhelming and I skipped through the Xenomorph-on-a-spaceship portion at the end

I watched Life and Covenant back to back, interesting how both of them basically used the same super predictable plot device for the "twist" ending. I think that's more mediocre science fiction flick action than i can muster

>the air inside is safe to breathe
>really? well fuck, let's take off our helmets
>no, that's a bad idea
>fuck it, i'm gonna do it anyway
I understand that the air was breathable, but it's an alien planet and they spent less than 2 minutes deciding if they should remove their helmets or not. It was not discussed, it was simply a scanner test. The shit seemed pants-on-head retarded for people that are in the science field.

just lots of stupid shit throughout the entire film
>fuck, we got left behind. guess we have to stay the night
>i've got an idea. let's keep exploring and shit
>g-guys.. i'm getting some reading from the pups.. it's picking up life
>wait, wtf?? what do you mean??
>nvm, forget it.. have a good night
>fuck, that sucks.. whelp, let's keep moving, even tho it could be some alien shit that's hostile and we've already encountered dead giant bodies but fuck it, let's keep going

I still can't get over how insanely overpowered the Neomorph is compared to the Xenomorph

> vector of infection is freaking microscopic dust particles leaving you with virtually no possibility to avoid (as opposed to giant-ass eggs and a fucking facehugger the size of a dog)
> bursts out after like 6 hours tops (as opposed to 24+ hours)
> immediately is a four-legged, ultra fast killing machine (as opposed to some stupid penis worm that can't do anything but run)
> matures on what seems to be little to no food during the cours of an afternoon (as opposed to another 24+ hours where it constantly needs to feed)

and this was supposed to be a sort of level 1, semi-naturally occuring kind of monster? David spent years on (somehow) cultivating the Xeno - which we're supposed to conceive as the level 99 form - based on these things? I liked Prometheus because it was at least trying to do something big and lofty and different and they basically just abandoned all of that with Covenant and tried to restart the alien franchise.

It's fucking annoying cause Prometheus at least did set itself up to explain this shit at some point. Because these supposedly aren't the final alien species, but an ancestor

>black goo can create neomorphs which grow a lot quicker and kill from birth - how is a xenomorph a "perfection" of that. It's flat out worse
The whole point of the David character is to represent a sort of creator godhood deal in which only the creator is fully aware of his own plan. It's admittedly skewed since David did not create the humans from which he has based his plan around, but David himself also represents the deviation of the created from the creator's will. Old Davey just hasn't bothered to tell the details of what in fact makes the creatures perfect by his definition
>>
>>84767472
>those aren't the final alien species, but an ancestor

THE REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF A SPECIES DOESN'T GET MORE COMPLICATED OVER GENERATIONS IF THE FINAL ANIMAL REMAINS ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL
>>
>>84767496
What reproductive cycle? As of Covenant the alien cannot reproduce.
>>
>>84767401
what happened with prometheus was ridley wanted to make a movie about ancient aliens. The studio greenlit it because they heard "ancient Alien: the prequel to Alien." So now ridley is signed into a contract where he has to make multiple "Alien" prequel movies. Then halfway through production of prometheus, when it was clear ridley wasn't doing anything remotely related to the Alien franchise, the studio stepped in and meddled around until eventually prometheus as it currently exists was released.

Now ridley is under contract to keep making Alien prequels.

It's not absolutely identical. There are a number of cues as to why the aliens featured in Covenant are not the same ones that Ripley and co. face many years later
>lack of biomechanical appearance

>>

Your definition of "casual viewer" seems closer to "vegetable" than any conscious human being of age to view R rated movies in 1979.
>>
>>84767515
Then why would it come from an egg?

This would make sense if Scott was going to push the original idea of the Alien dissolving its prey into the eggs, but as soon as you throw anything past Alien into the mix he's clearly too senile to work out what the fuck to do. David creates an egg... somehow?? That produces the facehugger from it.... again, somehow??? Nothing's laying these eggs... he just somehow.... made an egg.

The entire set up before we saw those fucking eggs was him experimenting with exposure of the black goo to animals and how he could (somehow???) tweak it to achieve different results. Then he leads the audience into a room and BAM! We have fucking eggs now... somehow. Just eggs in the room... laid by nothing.

Also the whole "I created the perfect lifeform" hype had no substance.

Xenomoprh is not something to be hyped about.
We've seen hundreds of them get killed with automatic rifles in Aliens. They are pretty much fodder.
Thinking a xenomorph would save the whole movie with en empty shell was a big mistake.

It is pretty apparent that the movie was targeting the casual milenial film goer, the same type who'd get hyped for seeing a single frame of Darth Vader or any oldschool SW character in a neo starwars film.

Holywood is completely fucked the greed of capitalism. Nothing good will come out of it, like ever again.

>>
>>84766574
The main difference I noticed is that the neomophs are basically animalistic and simple, they hunt the crew recklessly and get killed with relative ease by a few bullets. The xenomorph shows much more intelligence and cunning, stalking the humans and striking when they least expect it, etc.

Also the neomorphs almost definitely don't have acid blood, the one that was killed by the captain looked like just red blood.
>>
>>84768143
>get killed with relative ease by a few bullets
you mean like right in front of a lander when it got shot several times and just ran away
>>
>>84766574
>matures on what seems to be little to no food during the cours of an afternoon (as opposed to another 24+ hours where it constantly needs to feed)
Xenos don't need to feed to grow. Their acid blood provides them energy similar to a battery. A chestburster's downtime is just spent growing and molting its skin a number of times. It's also theorized that they don't really need to eat at all and mainly use the biological materials of their victims as source materials to help maintain eggs which is why they cocoon dead bodies alongside live ones.

>>
>>84768305
>The Chestburster is arguably the most vulnerable stage of the Xenomorph's life cycle. While it grows rapidly, in the early stages the infant is almost defenseless, save for its acidic blood. If born in a populated area a Chestburster will immediately seek escape, preferably via a means that will not allow easy pursuit (e.g. through air ducts or vents, possibly going as far as burning a hole in a wall or floor with its own blood). While they have been known to attack and kill humans even in this infant stage,[17] the Chestburster's proficiency in this regard is limited and the creatures are known to simply prefer hiding until they reach maturity. If undisturbed, newly born Chestbursters may possibly consume parts of the human victim for sustenance.
The aliens are also seen breathing out steam despite having an adaptable body temp that always matches ambient temps. If we're going to get nit-picky, we're going to be here awhile
>>
>>84768455
Thats physics, not a plot hole or a design flaw
>>
>>84768499
>Thats physics
And exhaling steam is chemistry. The point is that the "science" part of science fiction is pretty fucking loose, so mass from no mass isn't exactly considered. Hell, the larger size of a bloodburster would cause those explorers that got infected with them to internally bleed well before the things erupted from them since the baby neomorphs are considerably larger than a chestburster

The number of people hating on this movie because it didn't blatantly give the audience answers doesn't surprise me at all. Everybody keeps praising the alien movies when those movies aren't good. Sorry but the only people who like those movies are people that grew up watching them. These huge ratings are simply blinded by nostalgia. These reviews keep pointing out that it's a horror but if you would play this movie in the theatres nowadays then it you have been taken as a comedy. Short anecdote, I was watching this movie with my friend and we started laughing so hard at the part where the robot was trying to shove a magazine in Ripley's mouth that I had tears in my eyes. I understand that it was something back in the day but when you compare the two it obvious which one is better. Also why do old futuristic movies suck at making things look futuristic. They really couldn't have changed the monitors even a little bit? Also those hairstyles are so bad. People from the 80s really did loose their fking minds. Might be a reason why the world is more fked up then usual.

I will say that I have defended Prometheus since its release and always had a problem with the helmet thing, and cannot defend Covenant but don't see a problem with the helmet thing (given they had all the spec and data to show the atmosphere was safe). There's way more wrong with Covenant than just the helmet thing. Even the landing craft blowing up was actually quite good cause the lack of preparedness was demonstrated very well and it was obvious the incompetence was a deliberate character trait. But the problems run so, so deep in Covenant.

>>
>>84771194
OK, here's what I understand so far as the mythos even though it's fucking stupid at this point:

>Small amounts of black goo mutate people, ultimately turning them into weird monsters (we also see the little worms grow into massive snakes)
>Because that goo was in Shaw's husband it mutated this sperm, making it super powerful and able to impregnate her but the child was a crazy monstrous thing because of the goo in the sperm
>This monster baby grew loads and fucked the engineer and impregnated him with some sort of proto Xeno thing

Fast-forward 5 years:
>Scott complete abandons all the proto shit that looked like it was going to lead to a Xeno
>Also forgets that Xenomorphs were visible in the architecture in Prometheus, meaning the engineers actually had created them and the audience just wanted to know how
>Larger amounts of the black goo just break down matter (as seen in prologue to Prometheus where engineer drinks some)
>David dumps loads on the engineer home world and it just destroys them all
>The leftover particles of the black goo float around and infect everything and mutate them all
>Infect the plant-life, leading to the spore-creating black egg plant things
>These spores, when ingested, somehow create the neomorph thing which grows inside and escapes and kills everything it sees
>David tries to perfect this formula by infecting all local fauna with these black spores and seeing what happens
>???
>Alien eggs

ah, haven't got there yet. watching while the thread is up. don't really care about spoilers, and I wanted something to look at while i'm afk grinding in rocket league.
>>
>>84771406

I totally get the frustration here. there may never be any sense of it.

one last bastion of possibility here is that David came across the Engineers' previous experimentation with xenos, and that is how he came across the facehugger eggs—rather than him creating them himself. His now having a shipload of colonists might help him learn to re-create and perfect the xeno queen, perhaps. But I'm really reaching for some sense here where there probably isn't any.

holy shit I laughed way too hard at this scene.

now after just finishing covenant 5 minutes ago, and watching prometheus just yesterday, I have to say that covenant is the better watch. the twist was way too predictable, but it gave us a great setup for the next film.
>>
>>84764493
Idk man. I see what you're getting at but I think Ridley is that much of a hack now after watching covenant. The engineers went from the givers of life in the universe to some fucking afghan cult.

They're banking off of the first two movies and playing people's hopes that the series will redeem itself with the next installment.
>>
>>84766328
>The whole final act shouldn't have happened. The film should have ended on that amazing shot of the chestburster coming out of Oram.
This
>>
>>84773066
Prometheus also gave us a good setup for a follow up that was then thrown completely out the window in Covenant, so don't get your hopes up.
>>
>>84773334
the mini flashback of david dropping the nuke was pretty nice. more of that would've been good.

How come David didn't have the hole in his chin where he got stabbed if he can't regenerate?

Also why did the girl not realise when he was putting stitches on his face instead of regenerating

>>

the haircut should've been obvious. if you watch any scene with the two of them, david's cut is clearly different.
>>
>>84763541
I thought it was a pretty good movie, made me want to rewatch Prometheus and I did.
I'm looking forward to Alien : Awakening.
>>
>>84774333
Not to mention that he was pretty much fucked up after Prometheus. Somehow Shaw managed to carry out some Star-Wars-head-switching-tier repair on him
>>
So did David create Xenomorphs or did he re-create them by trying to emulate the Engineers and claim his status as better than humanity?
>>
>>84774471
yeah, never really explained how that worked. there should be obvious signs around the neck that his head was re-attached.
>>
>>84774549
who the fuck knows. Even if you assume some version Ridley will change it 10 times before next episode
>>
>>84769143
Because I was phone posting and didn't give a shit about autocorrect, but let's get to the real issue here:

>bongistani has to tell everyone that they're a bongoloid

I fucking hate these episodes.

>I thought it was a pretty good movie
We're living in the age of MCU after all.
>>
>>84766476
No
>>
The movie should be about the xenomorph
Not David
It also doesn't help that Ridley decided to explain away the mystery of the xenomorph in the dumbest way possible

This movie was trash. Not an alien movie. Also Ridley is a hack
>>
>>84775312
Fass saved that movie if you can say about any saving
>>
>>84775312
If anything they should drop the xenomorph and irrelevant humans and focus on David.
>>
>>84775312
>not david
if these movies are explaining the origin of xenomorph, and david was deeply involved behind their creation, it makes sense.

also, david's manifesto is the only thing saving this trilogy. literally don't give a shit about any other character, and that includes everyone from both films.
>>
>>84775563
>. literally don't give a shit about any other character,
they should have kept Shaw. No idea why they killed her
>>
>>84775554
>you will never get a torture porn alien movie of David experimenting on Shaw for 110mins.

Why live
>>
I think it's pretty well implied that David used shaws eggs to create the alien eggs, not sure why people are acting like it's a plothole.

Also David has fossilized facehugger eggs in his place that he disected, he even mentions in the script and novelisation that he found the eggs and was basically trying to recreate the xenos

Yet you all keep banging on about how it's stupid that he invented the xenos

Does anyone pay attention
>>
>>84776171
For the MCU to die after Infinity Wars.
>>
>>84777480
>I think it's pretty well implied that David used shaws eggs to create the alien eggs

ENVIABLE UNIONS

You know how hard Covenant fucked up when it made Resurrection story make more sense.
>>
>>84771520
In some of the games/comics, a regular xeno can molt into a queen if there isn't one around.
>>
Even back then, as soon as Prometheus, I knew they were never gonna deliver on that promise/cliffhanger.

Then I saw "Written by Damon Lindelof" and then I REALLY knew.

It's kind of a miracle that Ridley at least showed a bit of Shaw and Engineers before they died. Too little, too late is still bette rthan nothing too late.
>>
I just wanted a Lovecraftian film where David and Shaw explored the engineers homeworld and learned about the wonders of the universe. Why was that so hard to get?

No one asked for dull generic aliens slasher reimagining #4. No one.

Fuck you ridley
>>
>>84777681
>No one asked for dull generic aliens slasher reimagining #4
You do realize that this happened because of all the Prometheus backash, right? And now we got something that's even worse than Prometheus.
>>
>>84777598
Trust me the movie is far from good, but people come up with bullshit to moan about that doesn't exist, they should be more seemed with the shitty characters and no helmets.

David found fossilized xeno eggs
David uses shaws eggs which he had harvested from her to attempt to recreate the xenos eggs using the black goo
Probably some engineers will appear in the next movie, and will attempt to stop him from returning to earth with a ton of colonists in cryo infected with xenos
After epic space battle the ship of the engineer will crash leading into Alien
>>
>>84777838
The only bits people backlashed against prometheus on were the retarded slasher bits and people acting like meatheaded democrat voters. I don't remember much criticism of the engineers
>>
>>84777838
So now it's the audience's fault they made a shitty rehash?

fucking kek, it's time to euthanize yourself ripley
>>
>>84777860
what were the engineers running from in prometheus? during that "replay recording".
>>
>>84778020
going by alien universe, one of their xenomorph related fuckups, theyre retards just like us
>>
>>84778109
it's weird because the end of prometheus showed giant man fighting tentacle monster, and he was holding his own for a little while.

guess it had to be some serious xeno to make an entire squad of them take off running, instead of standing ground and fighting back.
>>
>>84778345
It might have been one of their own that got mutated somehow like this

A similar scene was in the movie. There was no alien contortion jumping shit in the released scene, instead opting for some shambling uruk hai in a bodysuit. It was a poor decision
>>
>Prometheus
>Alien: Covenant
Why did they decide to add 'Alien' to the title? Why not just call it Covenant? Or why not call it 'Alien: Prometheus'? Is this Scott being Scott?
>>
>>84779803
I want to say studio influence, which is why we got an entire David story which could have been 2 separate films in and of itself condensed into half of one
>>
Am I the only one who would've loved a movie with almost no action, just characters exploring a destroyed Engineer city and dealing with the idea that their creators were are killed before they got to interact with them?
>>
>>84780227
You are definitely not the only one. I would have loved if we actually got Prometheus 2 instead of Alien 0
>>
i loved covenant and prometheus go out of there way to not fall into fan service. Its doing its own thing.

Blomkamp would go full fan service
>Muh newt muh queen and space marines lol xD

I hope ridly brings back the orginal alien lifecycle of eggmorphing
>>
huge alien fan here. alien 1,2,3 are all great. 4 is kinda strange, but can be passed as a alien comic film adaption.

prometheus was amazing, eventhough some ppl got hung up by some strange decisions made by the actors. mostly stupid ppl, who didnt understand what was going on in the movie with low imagination, who got frustrated that they didnt get served a run-off-the-mill action movie, focuesed entirely on these flaws and dismissed the whole rest. make no mistake, prometheus is amazing.

covenant is amazing, too. the first half of the movie started slow, that has to be admitted, but what followed then was face-meltingly cool and amazing. the whole david did some fucked up experiments to shaw implications, david killing the still evolving, not fully evolved engineers (no "real" enigneers) -- all in all, the evolution of the whole david character and how he turned evil... and that amazing ending. FUCKING BRILLIANT! can not wait to see how the story goes on.

oh, and the implications that david, made by weyland, created the xenomorphs, which in turn means, weyland/humans are resonsible for the creation of such a dangerious life form, is freaking cool, too. as an origin story to the alien universe, prometheus and especially covenant are damn brilliant and well thought out. god damn, the scene where david is crouching, throwing stones in boredom at the guy infected by the facehugger, waiting for this creation to come out, is brilliant.

and finally: the damn neomorphs are scary, ruthless creates. xenos are based off of them, so that actually explaines why the aliens are so agressive and though. they are not a "normal" life form (at least covenant indicates taht). they are the end product of a series of fucked up events and dna manipulation, which is a cool origin story and explaines their thoughnes and behaviour through all the alien movies.

so if shaw may end up being the first "alien queen", then david is the first "alien king", how cool is that?
>>
>>84780378

yes, very true! promethus and covenant did very little fan service, which made them so good. huge props to ridley scott! unlike the star wars prequels which turned out shit, to a huge part because of the fan service.
