I was surprised by how much I liked it. I really appreciated that Ridley went back to making a fairly straightforward monster movie, instead of the lazy philosophical piece that was Prometheus. And as a sci-fi horror, Covenant was pretty okay. The characters were all stupid, but that's basically par for the course with horror; the only thing that really bothered me were the weird contradictions to the past movies relating to how xenomorphs work, grow, and how old they apparently are.

I'm guessing Scott figured people would leave it at that, but there are some inconsistencies. The biggest one being the ship in Alien, which held xenomorph eggs and was supposed to have been there for a very long time (enough to be fossilized). If David created xenopmorphs, it's basically impossible for an engineer to fly a ship full of eggs to a planet millions of years ago.

The chestbursters also looked completely different, and it seems like the neomorphs and xenomorph grew way more quickly.

Just like with other series that go back with prequels, the tech matchup with the Covenent and the Nostromo or even Sulaco just seems wrong. The first Alien movie, the xenomorph needed quite some time to grow into a full adult. In Covenant it might as well could have happened in a minute. Besides it's pretty jarring. Having a stupidly overpowered monster makes it difficult to take it seriously, compared to a creature that you know is hiding somewhere, biding it's time to grow strong enough to fuck your shit up.

Xenos don't need to feed to grow. Their acid blood provides them energy similar to a battery. A chestburster's downtime is just spent growing and molting its skin a number of times. It's also theorized that they don't really need to eat at all and mainly use the biological materials of their victims as source materials to help maintain eggs which is why they cocoon dead bodies alongside live ones.

The number of people hating on this movie because it didn't blatantly give the audience answers doesn't surprise me at all. Everybody keeps praising the alien movies when those movies aren't good. Sorry but the only people who like those movies are people that grew up watching them. These huge ratings are simply blinded by nostalgia. These reviews keep pointing out that it's a horror but if you would play this movie in the theatres nowadays then it you have been taken as a comedy. Short anecdote, I was watching this movie with my friend and we started laughing so hard at the part where the robot was trying to shove a magazine in Ripley's mouth that I had tears in my eyes. I will say that I have defended Prometheus since its release and always had a problem with the helmet thing, and cannot defend Covenant but don't see a problem with the helmet thing (given they had all the spec and data to show the atmosphere was safe). There's way more wrong with Covenant than just the helmet thing. It's kind of a miracle that Ridley at least showed a bit of Shaw and Engineers before they died. Too little, too late is still bette rthan nothing too late.

I just wanted a Lovecraftian film where David and Shaw explored the engineers homeworld and learned about the wonders of the universe. Why was that so hard to get?

Am I the only one who would've loved a movie with almost no action, just characters exploring a destroyed Engineer city and dealing with the idea that their creators were are killed before they got to interact with them?

huge alien fan here. alien 1,2,3 are all great. 4 is kinda strange, but can be passed as a alien comic film adaption.

prometheus was amazing, eventhough some ppl got hung up by some strange decisions made by the actors. mostly stupid ppl, who didnt understand what was going on in the movie with low imagination, who got frustrated that they didnt get served a run-off-the-mill action movie, focuesed entirely on these flaws and dismissed the whole rest. make no mistake, prometheus is amazing.

covenant is amazing, too. the first half of the movie started slow, that has to be admitted, but what followed then was face-meltingly cool and amazing. the whole david did some fucked up experiments to shaw implications, david killing the still evolving, not fully evolved engineers (no "real" enigneers) -- all in all, the evolution of the whole david character and how he turned evil... and that amazing ending. FUCKING BRILLIANT! can not wait to see how the story goes on.

oh, and the implications that david, made by weyland, created the xenomorphs, which in turn means, weyland/humans are resonsible for the creation of such a dangerious life form, is freaking cool, too. as an origin story to the alien universe, prometheus and especially covenant are damn brilliant and well thought out. god damn, the scene where david is crouching, throwing stones in boredom at the guy infected by the facehugger, waiting for this creation to come out, is brilliant.

and finally: the damn neomorphs are scary, ruthless creates. xenos are based off of them, so that actually explaines why the aliens are so agressive and though. they are not a "normal" life form (at least covenant indicates taht). they are the end product of a series of fucked up events and dna manipulation, which is a cool origin story and explaines their thoughnes and behaviour through all the alien movies.

so if shaw may end up being the first "alien queen", then david is the first "alien king", how cool is that?

yes, very true! promethus and covenant did very little fan service, which made them so good. huge props to ridley scott! unlike the star wars prequels which turned out shit, to a huge part because of the fan service.
