>Look, its a common enough problem: everybody wants super enemy a to be as threatening in appearance 700 as they were in appearance 1.
Your long, angry paragraph looks kind of stupid when you're wrong first sentence. People just want a good Dalek episode. Them being threatening doesn't really mean anything if the story is garbage. And your outlook is seriously distorted if you think the Daleks were more threatening in their first serial back in the 60s than they were in, for example, the 2005 Dalek. Your generalisation that an enemy's peak threat level is their first appearance, and that it can never be topped afterwards is simplistic and easy to dismiss. The Joker in Batman, Cigarette-Smoking Man in X-Files, Darth Vader in Star Wars, Voldemort in Harry Potter, Green Goblin in Spider-Man, etc. Plenty of villains reach peak threat level after their first appearance, and continue to get good stories long after they've peaked.
>>84758929
Moffat
>let Matt pick his costume after not liking the initial one
>gave David Zygons for 50th anniversary
>Peter's favorite monster were mondasian cybermen
>let Simm have the goatee
RTD
>hated Eccleston's accent leading him to quit
>decided Sarah Jane was in love with the Doctor the whole time
>didn't let Simm play the Master the way he wanted to
Why is Moffat considered the worse showrunner?
>>84759296
>>hated Eccleston's accent leading him to quit
You do realize that's not actually why he left, right?
Would this have been a good story or no:
The Master returns to being a human without his Time Lord memories, and the Doctor takes him on as a companion in order to teach him the ways of being kind / good / responsible. Of course it ends badly, but what are your thoughts on a story arc like this? Only watched NuWho btw.
>>84759296
>hated Eccleston's accent leading him to quit
>didn't let Simm play the Master the way he wanted to
Source on these? Genuinely interested.
>>84759382
I can dig it. I suppose the problem, though, would be finding the kind of actor who could nail an interpretation of the Master and would also be happy being relegated to the far less interesting role of companion for however long the story takes to resolve itself.
Either way, I think fob-watch-disguised Timelord as a companion is a pretty good idea.
/who/ needs a cleansing.
The memes are getting out of hand.
>>84759296
Moffat also put the Drunk Giraffe in Matt's last episode, gave Matt various hats since he kept asking for them, gave Karen and Arthur the Weeping Angels for their last episode since it's their favorite monster, gave Peter the First Doctor since he loved seeing David Bradley in AAISAT and Hartnell was always his favorite Doctor, gave him Davros's chair after he said he always dreamed of sitting in it, let him play the guitar on screen after hearing him say he thought it'd be cool, etc.
Moffat seems like a fucking cool guy to work with.
>>84758638

>>84759541
dear lord
you are pushing me to THICCpost
>>84759382
>without his Time Lord memories
I guess it's a similar concept to the eponymous Master ear story, but that works because his memories are suppressed by his own volition (and a bit of space magic). I feel like that kind of plot would feel weird if his memories were forcibly taken. Who is the plot for at that point then? The Doctor's selfish desire for this person who is kind of like his frenemy to be good?
>>84759594
That's rather petulant, don't you think?
>>84759382
It would be good if the human Master was slowly revealed to be a psycho in subtle ways that flew under the Doctor's radar, increasing in scale over time, until it all blows up and the Doctor realizes the Master's personality is going to manifest itself in some way, shape, or form regardless, because it's so fundamental to his being. It would conflict with what they already did with Jacobi, though. I loved that whole cliffhanger, but I never bought that a human Master would just be good. The Doctor's personality still slipped through into John Smith's – the same should be true for the Master.

I don't know what that guy's talking about, the closest is that RTD told Tennant not to do his actual accent because he didn't want to be doing a "tour of Britain" with the Doctors or something. That sucks desu, 10's grating accent is part of the reason I don't like him, if Tennant was allowed to used his actual accent he would be a lot better
>>84759725
Yeah, but holding back the urge to THICCpost is what keeps me sane.

I don't think anyone thinks Moff is a bad showrunner. The man does huge amounts of shit to keep the show well funded and keep upgrading the show: hd cameras, cinema premiers, world press conference tours, mini episode hype, hypes big finish instead of just letting them exist, actively takes part in books, allows greater interconnectivity with the expanded universe, and even seeks out a greater talent pool(Neil Gaiman, Neil Cross of Luther fame and Rona Munroe who wrote Survival for the classic series.)

Eccleston was a well respected actor in Britain for a variety of roles in film and tv
Capaldi was Malcolm Tucker
counting John Hurt would be cheating

Season 3, Daleks Master Plan
THICC Rose
>>84760393
Both Tennent and Eccleston had quite extensive careers prior to Doctor Who for both stage and screen. Smith was the only truly unknown actor. Though Capaldi's the first oscar winning actor to play the role.
>>84760540
calling capaldi an oscar winning actor is a tad misleading considering the oscar was for directing
>>84760431
Maybe closer to this one, but yes
>>84760540
what was tennant known for? literally only saw him in casanova before who, and he was announced as the next doctor only a month later.
>>84760456
Worzel came after who. Pertwee did films and plays before who though. Had one with Hartnell if I remember.
Before Doctor Who McGann had been in Monocled Mutineer and Alien3 beforehand. Arguably besides Tennant being Barty Crouch that would make him most popular pre-doctor who.

>>84760737
Nearly all of Colin "THICC Master" Baker's.

>>84760748
established as a career yeah, I wouldn't call that 'known' though. not as much of an unknown quantity as smith obviously but he wasn't a name like eccleston or anything
>>84760655
I mean, not the ONLY kind. Thin's nice too. Just not ruling out something a bit bigger, particularly if she's funny or clever along with it.
>>84760737

>>84760740
that was after doctor who though
>>84760833
Just in general, I'm not really liking the idea of watching all of Classic Who.

>>84760792
YMMV. I guess the best way to describe the level of notoriety is to say that DT had a bit part in a movie starring Eccleston back in 96 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2_TkWhuJYs
>>84760775
This meme needs to die.
Twin Dilemma is shit, but watchble for establishing characterization. Attack of the Cybermen is a pretty good story. Its a shit cybermen story, but its a comfy fun action flick. Timelash is the only truly unwatchable story. Mark of the rani is lame but watchable. The Two Doctors is the best multidoctor pairup in Classic Who primarily because it gives a real storyline reason to have two doctors with two roles. Revelation of the daleks is kino as fuck, baker and molloy have great chemistry.
Trial of a timelord is kino.
>>84760310
Something like this?
Eccleston
Capaldi
Davison
McGann
Pertwee
Hartnell
Troughton
Tennant
C. Baker
T. Baker
Smith

>>84760918
pretty neat, never noticed he was in that
maybe he was more known than what I'm remembering, just going on personal experience really. I remember being surprised they went from eccleston, a guy who was somewhat of a coup for the show, to a much lesser known actor. all worked out in the end obviously but at the time it was unexpected.
>>84760833
>3 is skippable.
The fuck are you talking about? Season 7 and 9 are top tier kino. Season 7 is the only season of doctor who not to have a shit story among all of classic who.
Even the shit seasons of 3 has winners in there: Mind of Evil and The Daemons for series 8, Pertwee's last season had planet of the spiders and time warrior.
>>84760858
I can't say in general, that depends on what you're looking for when watching Classic Who. Cool monster stories, deeper lore episodes, highly rated episodes by fans etc. ?
>>84760960
That was my point yeah. As far as NuWho goes Eccleston and Capaldi being the most established then Tennant with some more minor success by comparison then Smith with almost nothing but a tv movie with Billie Piper and a one season tv series.

>>84760737
What would make you want to skip a serial? It being shit? It being unimportant to the shows history? You're going to have to be more descriptive. I certainly hope your not trying to watch chronologically if you're skipping stuff.

Are these the weapons you would use?" speech is way better than Capaldi's in Zygon Inversion. And Cartmel pottery with Ancelyn turning the "look me in the eye and end my life" thing from Happiness Patrol against him. It's really solid.

>explains how Skaro was destroyed in Remembrance but is back in the new series
to be fair, this has been resolved in a set of books and probably those Big Finish radio dramas, but in terms of the continuity of the series it makes no sense for Skaro to still be around for the Time War, or for the reappearance in Series 9
>resolves how the renegade Daleks would've won the Dalek Civil War of the old series, but decide to elevate Davros back to his old position of importance again anyways?
admittedly, he's kind of a prisoner of the Daleks when he's brought back in Series 4, but in Series 9 he's just slid back onto Skaro and no one has shit to say about it
>starts another Dalek Civil War between the RTD Daleks and the Power Rangers Daleks.
it's all good and fine if you don't like the Skittles color coding, but at least give them a proper send-off, and then have the Special Weapons Dalek Mk. II come in and obliterate the RTD Daleks too

I watched Sleep No More the other day and I hate it so much. Because it comes so close to being brilliant - "The entire episode is a fourth-wall-breaking villain's plan to infect the viewer" is a great, weird idea. "Sleep deprivation turns people into monsters" is probably a great idea, if done right. It should have been a classic. But they gave it to Mark Gatiss, and he had to go and mention eye mucous so that's the only thing anyone remembers about the monsters, and hire a transwoman only to cast her as a quasi-human Grunt creature, and have the Doctor somehow hack into dust particles, and it just all goes wrong. Gatiss is an alchemist who can only turn gold into shit.
>>84762718

There was a transwoman in Doctor Who?
>>84762853
Bethany Black, yeah. She was in one of RTD's penis food shows.
>>84762949
I think I remember the news now and I never noticed her in the actual season. Did she portray an alien or something?
>>84762718
>Because it comes so close to being brilliant - "The entire episode is a fourth-wall-breaking villain's plan to infect the viewer" is a great, weird idea
It's a dubious idea. Alongside "All just a dream", unreliable narrator is a dubious reveal because all it amounts to is "Holy shit, you say those fictional events depicted in a work of fiction didn't happen?!" It could work, of course.
Plus our expectations of Doctor Who are quite low. "The story makes no sense" doesn't work as a foreshadowing after so many stories were shit unironically.
>>84762949
>>84763044
What the fuck?
> As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, Black was delighted by her casting and reportedly confused writer Mark Gatiss by asking if the episode would be linked to 1977's The Sun Makers, as both were set in the 38th century.
> reportedly confused writer Mark Gatiss
Shouldn't a writer for a show at least know about past episodes of said show to answer no?
>>84763044
She's a "Grunt", which is some sort of genetically engineered slave race or something. He basically cast a comedian, only to give her no actual dialogue.
>>84763089
>lifelong Doctor Who fan
>knows and cares about the sun makers
>finally cast in favourite show
>sleep no more, lowest rated DW episode
>>84763128
So that is why I didn't notice her. She was more or less faceless.
I guess that transgender supporting anon would be disappointed since this show clearly isn't ready for a human transgender person and would much rather prefer to stick with their horses, flabs of skin, and cast actual trans people as faceless grunts.
>>84763075
I'm more interested in the potential to scare small children (and torment their parents) by convincing them the spooky man on the TV will turn them into sand creatures if they fall asleep. Blink hints at a similar thing by flashing a bunch of real statues onscreen while Tennant's "Blink and you're dead" bit replays, but there the fourth wall break is only implied, where this one by being found-footage could have really gone for it. But no one's going to be scared of eye boogers in the way they were creepy statues.
>>84763152
You also forgot...
> cast as a faceless grunt
Reminder: Doctor Who TV thought Doctor Who was transphobic
http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/little-boxes-will-make-you-angry-doctor-who-and-transphobia-71391.htm

>>84763221
identity politics is cancer
it convinces effeminate men and masculine women to change their gender identity like a placebo that magically makes them feel happier, but it only increases their insecurity by further ostracizing themselves in the larger community and makes them idolize a goal that is literally biologically unattainable
>>84763221

>>84763666

>>84763697
I'm willing to listen, why is it transphobic?
>>84763697
noun
1.
a female child.
"girls go through puberty earlier than boys"
synonyms: female child; More
Females do not have adams apples, girl is a synonym for female. You can have an adams apple and be feminine but you cannot have an adams apple (typically) and be female
>>84763697
>grabbing his adam's apple and using that as confirmation that he's not a girl is the transphobic part
How the fuck is that transphobic? The Doctor isn't a trans, so if he needs to check if he's a male or female, touching the adams apple will confirm that.
>>84763735
>>84763769
gender is emotional, not biological
you can't point to your adams apple as confirmation that you're not a girl - that's transphobic to mtf womenI don't believe that new age bullshit but that's the argument that's being made here

>>84764182
But there is still a scene where you see clara on that location
>>84758438
Dr. Who is fucking gay and fights autistic trashcans

>I want to avoid serials where fuck all happens that drag out too long
Why are you watching Doctor Who then
That's the entire show
>>84764219
yes and
What would doctor who be like now if the wilderness never happened and there was an uninterrupted 54 year run? Would we have the 45 minute format or would we still be working with long multi part serials where fuck all happens and a cliffhanger is tacked on the end of each episode?
>>84762268
>it makes no sense for Skaro to still be around for the Time War

this perfectly describes the monk trilogy
>>84763193
Yeah, Gatiss' "corner of your eye" shit in Sleep No More felt to me like his attempt at recapturing the magic of The Weeping Angels or The Silence, trying to regurgitate a Moffat trope. He failed
>>84764149
money probably
>>84764149
So they could make some episodes longer
I haven't actually seen any THICCth Doctor episodes. Are they good?
>>84764629
I wish nothing more than for you to leave /who/ and never return.
>>84764629
The audios are better.
>>84764807
I can hardly watch a full episode of New Who (still haven't finished Series 10 actually) so there's no way I'm making it through an audio.
>tfw anime studio working conditions in the first season of New Who scarred Eccleston so badly that he no longer wanted anything to do with the Doctor Who property, refusing to sign on to even the audio books
>>84764948
>>84764948
I unironically enjoyed these games when they came out
What's /who/ with you?
I edited a few Hartnell serials together with the narrated soundtracks and the LC recons, but it just takes too much time for too little return so I'm abandoning it. Wish the Beebz would make their own recons have the narration going over them, cause it really does help.
These are my favourite recons lately http://www.dailymotion.com/dwreconssubs They're the LC recons but subtitled. The subs help a lot...the audio quality on the recons isn't great, and the subtitler here makes sure the subs don't overtake the LC subs that say like "The Doctor moves over to the chumbley" or whatever.
I wish every missing ep would get animated but I don't see that ever happening.
Reminder that the Power of the Daleks animation was shite
The Invasion looked way better and that was like 11 years ago
Your phone rings. It's Chris Chibnall. He wants you to run a Doctor Who spinoff to air in 2018 or 2019.
You have absolute freedom, it doesn't need to be set in the present day or even on Earth. The only limitation is that you can't bring back an old spinoff, so no Torchwood, SJA, K9 or Class sequel. It has to be a new idea.
What do you do?
>>84765505
Dalek Spinoff either based on Dalek Empire or something relatively original. There was a failed spinoff which never materialised in the 60's by Terry Nation about this kind of thing and I reckon it'd have been GOAT as fuck - I'm not sure if this counts under your specified "no old spinoffs" since this never actually happened.

In my spare time I like to edit custom title sequences but only in the respect of using pre-existing ones and compiling them in certain different ways. Recently started using Lightworks as a step-up from my old software, and the quality change has been very interesting. I don't publish them online, I just have them for my own viewing, nor do I use my real name during them or make them about me - that's just fucking embarrassing.
I also started doing a few Shit Trips ideas, and I've found that both of them are 7 & Ace / Apocalypse related so far. By the time they're done, I want to start a 5 & Nyssa / Horror one because I think they're a good pairing.
>>84765637
you're not fooling anyone xander
>>84765643
I don't think NV uses Lightworks, it's far too bare-bones for that kind of shit.
>>84765505
I'd go for a series set on Gallifrey's ancient past about Rassilon's original rise to power, the time when he ran Gallifrey, and his eventual death. Possibly going past that, through the end of the time war, all the way through him getting banished by the doctor.
Good characterization for Rassilon's madness would be vital for that, though.
>>84765505
UNIT spin off
>>84765146
Thanks for those recons neo
>>84765637
Sounds like that would be interesting to play around with.
I wouldn't mind doing a Shit Trips but I just can't think of anything worth writing up.
>>84765826
The subtitled ones? No worries, I was just idly googling Loose Cannon subtitles and it came up. It's missing a few episodes (none of Marco Polo, and a couple missing from other serials here and there) but covers about ~80% of LC's stuff.
>>84765910
Yeah I've been watching Hartnell's era for the first time and it's been kino but the reconstructions can be rough sometimes, especially when the fucking audio is so low quality and it's hard to hear over the music

I read somewhere that the source material given to Simm was The Master from the movie.

>decided Sarah Jane was in love with the Doctor the whole time
I hate this so fucking much, it's one of the main reasons I hate School Reunion. Fuck Whithouse, one of the biggest hacks of NewWho, and fuck RTD if he prompted that reading of Sarah Jane. To reduce Lis Sladen to an accessory for Rose's character development was terrible. At least her spin-off was well-handled, and even referenced her Big Finish audios.

What did the doctor do between the War Doctor regeneration and Rose?
>>84760310
The Bakers are the ones where I can't remember hearing much of anything about what they'd done before. Davison was well known for being a TV vet(erinarian), Eccleston was a well known TV actor, Tennant was an up and coming new star with a couple of popular roles under his belt, Smith was pretty much unknown, Capaldi pretty famous for The Thick Of It.

That's funny becuase in his book RTD says Simm was the one who asked him to make the Master even more insane.
>Then, tonight, we went for dinner with John Simm at the St David's (well, I say dinner — bar food, peanuts and crisps). What a hoot! God, he can tell an anecdote. I've thought of him as the Master for so long, I'd forgotten what brilliant company he is. And he's the most incredible mimic. I never knew that. He was telling us stories that had pitch-perfect impersonations. (Amazing stories. I'll have to tell you one day.) He loved the Master-as-a-skeleton stuff. Loved the eyes. Also, he was raving about The Dark Knight, and he wants a bit of the Joker's insanity in the Master this time - which is fine, that's where I was heading. I wanted to make him madder. Brilliant!
>>84760833
Pertwee's era is one of the comfiest in all of Who, but feel free to skip anything past The Green Death bar Planet of the Spiders.
Fifth Doctor is equally comfy, but some of the stories are dire. Visitation, Earthshock, Warriors of the Deep, Resurrection of the Daleks and Caves are worth watching IMO
>>84767383
I have a feeling Simm meant he wanted to be mad but scary and manipulative, not just insane.
Where the fuck are all these new trips coming from?
>>84767438
Enablers letting them get away with it are more of a problem. THICC is literally going to fucking kill this place.
