I was convinced that's what they did, for four seasons they established that if someone dies you see them die until they are all the way dead. Then they did the same thing with Stannis. I went a whole year not really sure if either of them were really dead, only to see S6 and find out oh yeah, they're both dead. It completely ruined the impact of their deaths and was the final nail in the coffin for me taking the show seriously.
