During Castlevania III the Belmonts have gone into exile because humans feared them and saw them as monsters. It's implied later on in the series that the Church doesn't quite like them even though they tolerate them.

It makes sense that they decided to connect the dots here and give the church this shade of darkness. And Alucard's story is literally his mother dying in a fire because of a witch trial. It also makes sense to make the church inquisition-tier.

I have only seen chapter 1 so far, but I liked what I saw. And Drac is not a fedora. He knows God exists, but he has strayed from his path and now seeks only power and revenge. The japs would have probably done something among these lines. Nothing wrong with it.

Yea I noticed that too. It was pretty silly. Just more of an emphasis on the overly blunt theme that the priests/the church are the bad guys. "Bad guys" like that (aside from the scary devil monsters) are not really needed in this show. The antagonist is Dracula, who is already a multidimensional villain. He's not only bad. So why is it needed to only show everything Christian in such a one dimensional light? It's not. The show would be better if the Church, too, had more depth to it. Maybe dracula's wife's compassion for humanity was based in Christianity, for example. Maybe a few of the priests genuinely believed they were doing the right thing by executing wifey.

Maybe it's just an anime thing but the dialogue is awful and from the short trope filled bit that I've see the story couldn't be much better. Just look at the first scene where Dracula (or whoever) disappears and magically stalks around the giant room talking to the protagonist. I've seen that a million times and I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
