/tpg/ Cooper is never coming back edition

Friendly reminder that it's been confirmed that Eddie Vedder recorded a song that plays during the Twin Peaks finale. It confirms Agent Cooper never gets his mind back. (Pic is evil Cooper)

>Twin Peaks wiki claims that Nixon, Jackie Gleason, and Milford went to a "glass box" like on the show, at Hanscom Air Force Base in MA, and saw The Experiment / "mother" inside it

Anyone else hate how they made some of the Lodge shit so literal? Like how the spirits travel through electricity so Cooper needed to go through a giant electrical socket to get back into the world? It's kind of stupid, in my opinion. The Lodge really lost some of its mystique this season.
>>
>>84721843
The Experiment does kind of look like a grey alien though. And for them to see it in the room it would have to have a glass part. That entry is pretty misleading though and changing too much to fit the show.

You are right, but it doesn't really bother me

It's funny how in season 1 and 2, "Bob" could be taken as a representation of the "evil" in human nature, but in this season Bob is a physical entity, and we even know how he was born, it's kinda lame, but atleast we are getting some interesting visuals and ideas with that this season

bob has always been explicitly a physical entity that is also a metaphor for the evil that men do. Although Bob is real in-universe, FWWM can easily be read as a story about a girl who's been viciously abused for years on end and cannot process that her own father would do such a thing.

>>84721906
I really predict that this season is going to become the polar opposite of FWWM. As in it's well-liked and well-received at the time, but as time goes by and the hype cloud dissipates, its flaws will become more and more apparent. It's great for a lot of reasons, but I feel like people will look at a lot of the decisions with a more critical eye in the coming years.

I still love the series, but the enchantment is slightly wearing off and there's a lot of things I don't like about it.

This is why a lot of people think the series is a mess. So many fucking plot points introduced and there's no way they're all relevant and no way they're all going to get resolved. Even worse is that some have been introduced in only one scene probably to never be fucking seen again, like pic related. The first season of Twin Peaks was a masterclass in television writing. Such tight focus, perfect pacing, every character mattered.

Sure, the new season is far more ambitious and it's great just based on that alone, but it could have been cleaned up a bit.
>>
>>84723028
>So many fucking plot points introduced and there's no way they're all relevant and no way they're all going to get resolved.

I don't even think that's really the problem. The problem is having all this bullshit fill time within the last 18 hours we're ever getting in this universe with the characters everyone has been waiting to see again for 25 years. Yes I know, I'm Lynched.

For every great surreal scene in the original show there was another one that was really shlocky or stupidly melodramatic so before the new season started I considered TP a guilty pleasure.

2 things will buttblast me if done. A Coop bad end or a cliffhanger. Not saying I want a right as rain Coop drinking coffee and eating pie in the sunrise or anything but he at least deserves a neutral good but melancholy end. The entire point of the show concerning Twin peaks is about how things may be familiar, but time has changed things. Nothing is the same, you can't go back.

If it goes cliffhanger I could see Lynch getting Lynched.

/tpg/ in general overrates it, and FWWM in general, for that matter. People posted and said it's overrated, then people replied with an extreme counterpoint which caused a rebuttal of an equally extreme opposing viewpoint.

Saying the original show had its problems and liking Lynch going further with the surrealism like his movies doesn't mean you hate the original show. But the original show was the product of executive meddling. There's nothing wrong with liking it more but Lynch has a large fanbase outside of Twin Peaks that I'm sure are glad that the new season is how it is even if they still did like the first two seasons.
>>
>>84724512
There are only two possible ends for Coop:

>He gets his memories back, defeats the doppelganger, then goes back to living Dougie's life knowing that his old one is gone and all of his friends are either dead or hate him because of the mistaken identity. He may even willingly give up his memories again to deal with this.

OR

>He dies and ascends to the White Lodge.

I honestly think it might be the first one because of all the time we've spent with Dougie's family/coworkers. Clearly we're supposed to be getting emotionally attached to them for some big payoff.

I guess if I had to ask for a normiecore capeshit ending, the ideal for me would be Coop getting his memories back, saving the day and taking Janey E and Sonny Jim to live with him in Twin Peaks. At least then we'd have all our bases covered and you could truly call it a happy ending.

Lynch does abuse women in his movies but no more than men are abused in other movies, even those not by Lynch. And even though this is true Lynch also does like female protags and characters and the abuse just highlights the multiple dimensions of the characters. Not sure this applies to the new season of Twin Peaks so far but if the only thing this person got out of Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and Inland Empire is "Lynch likes to make women suffer" then they really shouldn't be criticizing movies.

>>He gets his memories back, defeats the doppelganger, then goes back to living Dougie's life knowing that his old one is gone and all of his friends are either dead or hate him because of the mistaken identity. He may even willingly give up his memories again to deal with this.

I know all the memeing about the Vedder song is just that, memeing, because there's no way you can be a functioning human being and think the lyrics are referring to anything but this.

Cooper spent a quarter of his life in a hellish dimension populated by reality warping spirits. He went in as a young man one day and left as an older one, probably with no sense of linear time so for him it probably only felt like a few hours or days, or even seconds. His friends are gone and the ones who are left think he's a piece of shit monster because an actual monster with his face used his identity to commit unspeakable acts of evil. He literally has nothing left to live for except the family of some shitty retarded clone of his who somehow loves him unconditionally. Why would he ever want to go back to his old life when he has this?
>>
>>84724434
Cooper wrote the part of Secret History containing the references to Norma's mother. Make of that what you will.

Also Nixon says at one point in the book "I am not a kook" in regard to his belief in UFO-type phenomena. I am not a kook.
>>
>>84724434
I get the feeling that Lynch and his fucktoy Frost by extension will only acknowledge Annie as little as they possibly need to because she was never their original idea and is the epitome of the network meddling that killed the original series.

She was only in FWWM because she was so central to the finale. That's literally it.
>>
>>84724943
The build up for Janey E this season is pretty unreal, she's a companion protagonist to Cooper at this point. He won't be old Dale, but he'll get something out of his suffering.

>all of his friends are either dead or hate him because of the mistaken identity

But everyone pretty much knows that DoppelCoop isn't him now. Cole, Albert and Diane know for a fact because of the fingerprint, and Hawk and Truman now know that "the one who came out of the Lodge with Annie that night... was not the good Cooper". Cooper didn't seem to have that many personal relationships outside of the FBI before Twin Peaks, and the truth is known by pretty much everyone he cared for except for maybe Audrey.
>>
>>84724943
Your post just described the Eddie Vedder song that plays at the end of the series.
>>
From all the leaked behind the scenes pics with Belushi, I think this is what we can logically conclude will happen in the next few episodes:

>the mafia will see Coop on the news and recognize him as the guy from the casino
>Belushi and co will be sent to deal with him accordingly
>they'll kidnap him and take him to the desert to kill or beat the shit out of
>his full memories will come back and he'll get help from the Lodge to kill or wound them enough to escape

I think logically this will happen in the 11th episode. SDCC is showing a special advance screening of it to go along with their Twin Peaks panel, so it obviously has to be a very special one.
>>
where the hell is this show going

it seems like fuck all is happening at TP and its just getting further and further away from the original material. Hawk and andy are going through evidence at a glacial pace and now we have cockroach frogs from a 1950's atomic test site
>>
>>84725088
Cole and Albert can only do so much for him if he's an internationally wanted criminal, though, even with Cole's Blue Rose authority unless he has more power in the FBI than he seems to. As for Diane, even though she knows the truth now, I'm not so certain she and Cooper could ever go back to having a relationship like the one they had before especially if there's some element of abuse that went on with Doppelcoop.

>>
>>84725217
Well yeah, that's different. If he has to pay for his doppelganger's crimes, then his life will be fucked up beyond repair. You can only imagine the type of shit that DoppelCoop got into. But then again, their fingerprints do not match, and it's on record unless the warden did away with the files.

The point was that most of the people he cares about know the truth now, though. Potential legal trouble is an entirely different issue altogether.

This is why him adopting Dougie's identity fulltime is the only ending that makes sense with the direction the show's going on.

As much as David likes LYNCHING us, I think even he knows how much of an unsatisfying ending it would be to see a beloved, heroic protagonist, who was rewarded for his love and kindness with 25 years of hell, get put away for life and possibly even executed for crimes he didn't commit.

Dougie was always a piece of shit based on what little we saw of him and have since learned about him, but Jane Eyre stood by him anyway.

This is one of the few instances in all of Twin Peaks where the overacting feels right somehow. I guess because it's being done for comedy instead of drama.

As cliched and saccharine as Cooper moving to Twin Peaks with Janey-E and Sonny Jim would be, I would love it. Cooper deserves the best, most hopeful sendoff possible, especially if this is the last time we ever see this character.

I mean he lived in Las Vegas where it doesn't seem that anyone who would have recognized him would have been. And even if they did look for him they wouldn't have the slightest clue where to start. We also don't know when exactly Dougie was created. If we assume he met Janey-E and had Sonny Jim (how old even is he? I'm not good with ages) that would mean he was created around 10 or so years ago at the latest, which would be 15 years after Cooper disappeared and I don't think the FBI would have been looking for him for 15 years. There's a lot of reasons why nobody would have recognized or found him.

If they were looking for him. Which I don't think they were. Dougie most likely wasn't created directly after Dopplecoop left Twin Peaks and even if he was the FBI has to purposely search for certain things to be able to find anything. Why would they look in Las Vegas of all places as opposed to anywhere else? Especially if Dougie was created several years after Cooper disappeared. Not who you're replying to and I'm just playing devil's advocate, but everyone who says they want a more coherent, focused story with fewer (therefore more important) characters and a semblance of stylistic consistency with the first 2 seasons is called a redditor, so I think those people have stopped pleading their case altogether.

I myself love Lynch's work, but I can see where people are coming from. If he had evolved from Twin Peaks, he should have just done something new and completely different, instead of forcing "completely different" onto something old.
>>
>>84727237
Pretty sure someone said this above but the first two seasons weren't all that different in regards to the characters. The main story was Laura's murder and there were a lot of characters not related to that in any way that could have been cut if all you want out of a TV show is a single plot line. There's even a fan edit that does just that. I haven't watched it but I'm sure it isn't as good because these are TV shows and not movies and so can get away with having more characters and plot threads.

I myself would also like something new from Lynch but he felt like revisiting Twin Peaks. Your complaints about the new season being too different also makes me think of all the times a show is revived and follows the old series too closely only to be called nostalgia bait. Regardless of what happens someone is going to complain.

Don't get me wrong, that anon is a retard too, but if someone claims something is shit, then "it's INTENTIONAL" is not an argument against that. It's a random, irrelevant claim that everyone is already well aware of and has no bearing on whether or not the content is indeed shit.
>>
Lynch is a hack, the new series is shit, and if you like it, you have objectively shit taste & should kill yourself ASAP
>>
>>84727237
>inb4 someone says dumb shit about how people only like watching the same thing and can't handle things changing and evolving

NuPeaks is like if they made a new season of Mad Men and it became science fiction where they opened a new agency on the moon. Change and different styles are good when they make sense, not when they clash with the status quo so blatantly.
>>
>>84727343
Saying something is shit because it does basically the same thing the creator has been doing for over a decade is also not an argument unless these same people are going to say that Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire are also all shit. I've seen people say it about Inland Empire but not the other too.
>>
>>84727333
The difference is that the original series didn't have the absolutely glacial scene pacing, so they were able to actually keep those plot threads spinning.

TP2 is full of dead air, so we have plot threads getting shelved left and right. Characters show up, then we don't see them for six episodes.

I feel like it would work much better as Lynch's intended "18-hour film". The weekly episodic format fucking kills it. If /tpg/ didn't exist, it would be fucking brutal to watch live.
>>
>>84727451
This is the fault of the way it's being aired clashing with how it was actually made. I'm going to wait to see how the entire thing ends up but as of right now I personally don't have a problem with the pacing as long as it's airing weekly but these two week breaks are unbearable. Kyle said it'll all make sense so I imagine the majority of the plot threads will be resolved.
>>
>>84727523
>>84727542
Whether this turns out to be true or not, the claim that "the first two seasons weren't all that different in regards to the characters" is wrong.
>>
>>84727567
It's not. There were lots of plot threads that had jack shit to do with the main story and could have been cut out if you wanted a more focused story. The pacing of the new season has nothing to do with what I'm saying. The great thing about TV though is it's more long form and so you can have several different plot threads at once as opposed to a 2 hour movie where there isn't as much time to do so.
>>
>>84727567
Yeah, people say "look at all of this unrelated shit" in regards to the central mystery, but they were intentionally unrelated in most cases. They were red herrings in a murder mystery. If there aren't multiple lines of thought for the viewer, it becomes uninteresting and predictable.

"Look at this criminal Hank, could he have something to do with this? Now Josie isn't as innocent as she seems. What could she know about Laura?"

Even though it all ended up being nothing, they were there to divert your attention and make you think.

"Low number two below the crown, next to nothing off the top, don't worry about the blend, I'll be back in three weeks anyway..."
>>
It's so fucking stupid. The pacing is so slow for a television series, but it's technically not a television series, it's an 18 hour movie split into parts, but who the fuck has time to watch a 18 hour movie?
Also, I don't even the pacing would work with as a whole 18 hour movie. Tarkovsky was a lot better at slower pacing. His scenes felt like they were breathing. Lynch's feel like they're limping.
>>
>>84727687
Yeah. The problem now is that there is no central mystery, or even a clear central plotline. We were told that the show is about Agent Cooper's odyssey back to Twin Peaks, but halfway through the show the main character is still essentially braindead. Wow, we've been LYNCHED. You really got us.
>>
>>84726543

I've seen the pilot. It was... goofy but it had some laughs.
>>
>>84727628
Let me condense my post so you don't get triggered by the word "pacing" this time
>The difference is that the original series kept those plot threads spinning, whereas TP2 has characters show up and then we don't see them for six episodes.
All the subplots in TP were also connected to potential culprits in the original murder mystery. In hindsight they're "irrelevant", but as you're watching they are all windows into the lives of might-be murderers.

Amazing how people don't even realize that when the comparison is made. Is it any wonder that any non-main story plot became immediately unbearable to watch post-killer reveal? Were they really that much worse? No, it's because there was no intrigue with no central story to connect them to.

That's the same problem with season 3.
>>
I dont get what people see with season 3, its just not twin peaks.
Show was about something different. I dropped s3 after 4 episodes.
>>
>>84727817
Perhaps that's my problem since I don't remember watching the show like that even before I knew who killed her. But I'm not saying I disliked them. I think it's a benefit of TV to be able to do this. And I don't dislike the new season for it either, and have no problem sitting down to watch an episode like some people seem to. They are I imagine all connected and will come together and not seeing a plot thread for a few episodes doesn't diminish my enjoyment of it at all and I also enjoy the stuff that could just be Lynch doing something surreal for the sake of it.
>>
>>84727987
I dropped the series right after the Wally scene
meme it all you want fags, but it was objectively a horrible scene and one of the worst directed scenes in anything Lynch related
>>
>>84728043
The Wally scene was one of the most Twin Peaks-iest things on the show, though.

I really loved it.
Late at night, police station with those comfy lights. Woods surrounding the place.
Someone new appearing, dreamy ambient.

I dont follow the conversation, somehow it gets so confortable again, proud Andy and Lucy.

Scene tasted like a good scotch

Imagine being /tpg/ watching this show and having to be all like "damn, Twin Peaks: The Return, you fuckin' kino, all artsy with your loose plot points and horrifically vague visual drama. I would totally watch you, both as Anonymous and the real me." when all he really wants is it to be more like season 1 and 2. Like seriously imagine having to be /tpg/ and not only sit in that chair while Twin Peaks: The Return flaunts it's poor quality in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing it's poor editing and painful pace, and just sit there, scene after scene, episode after episode, while it unravels that story. Not only having to tolerate it's poor quality visual effects but its terrible acting as everyone on the internet says it's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, TWIN PEAKS LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch its disappointing fucking story contort into types of abstractions you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been watching nothing but a healthy diet of Twin Peaks and X-Files and later alleged Game of Thrones for the past YEAR AND A HALF coming straight out of the boonies in /tv/. You've never even seen anything this fucking boring before, and now you swear you can see the CGI that's breaking out in the Black Lodge as it makes it more bizarre to writhe it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to pay to sit there and revel in its "surreal (for that is what it calls itself)" art, the art they worked so hard for with Showtime in the previous years. And then then Retard Coop gets another bumbling scene, and you know you could troll every single person in this thread before the other anons could call you a pleb, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Anonymous. You're not going to lose your self-perceived patricianhood over this. Just bear it. Post LYNCHED and bear it.

I actually want it to be more like Inland Empire but I'm not sure how well that would work in Twin Peaks' universe.
