The first half is great!

The second half sucks balls and repeats the first half's arcs but with less interesting characters and more contrivances.

Just stop after that one scene halfway through. When you get there, you'll know what I'm talking about. You'll know it because you'll think "damn, that changes the game! How on earth will they top this?" Spoiler: they won't, everything goes downhill from there, and that's a good ending point for the series anyway, as it's the completion of most of the first half's arcs and is fairly satisfying in it's resolution.

I didn't find the story and characters contrived (most of the characters anyway), because of the same thing you praise: visual storytelling. Because of that, I think it's leagues above the usual soap opera corniness of anime. You still have some flowery moments, like when Ishida wakes up from his coma and runs over to the bridge where Nishimiya is, but I found it emotionally effective overall. I also don't mind the "chromatic abberation" and lens effects.

I read the one-shot manga a while back, which only focused on Ishida and Nishimiya, so when I first heard of the movie, I was concerned about the larger cast from the serialized manga. Was pleasantly surprised to find that almost each character received enough development.

You're completely right and I don't know what more people don't agree. As much as the word gets overused, HxH is very much a pseudo-intellectual series. It constantly references intelligent ideas and creates scenarios that could use them cleverly, but almost everything that happens ends up being solved by something that someone pulls out of their ass and then just happens to work, which is retroactively made out to be clever.

It's actually, legitimately worse than most 'mindless' shounen, because while watching DBZ you know you can just turn your brain off, but HxH goes further and gives people who don't know any better the impression that they are actually thinking meaningfully about the problems it presents and causes them to feel that they've actually learned something when they see how characters solve their problems.

That it (the 2011 version at least) is mostly the very worst excesses of shounen taken to further extremes than usual, as opposed to the 'deconstruction' people claim it is (which is only a small part of it at best), seems to go over their heads. We don't just get characters standing around explaining their powers, we get tons of episodes dedicated almost entirely to this in excessive detail, only to preemptively excuse the shear number of crazy autistic 'character has secretly prepared some keikaku that is only to be revealed at the most dramatic time' scenarios. When an ass-pull occurs, it isn't just a regular 'my rage gives me a powerup ability at the last minute' asspull, it usually involves taking an otherwise logical scenario and twisting it in such a way to reveal a solution that makes the original puzzle meaningless. Its all such bullshit I don't know why more people don't refuse to swallow it.

Magnetic Rose is the best example of animekino. Produced by Otomo (who made Akira), but thankfully they kept him away from the writing, leaving it to Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paprika, etc).

Katsuhiro Otomo production + Koji Morimoto directing + Satoshi Kon script + Yoko Kanno score = An absolutely flawless masterpiece.

Discard the other two films in Memories unless you're up for some eyecandy.

When they start developing minor characters including that guy that dies in the end (the blonde one) yeah it's slow. You don't who these people are and you're just following their routine for a bit - but they manage to make them interesting by the end of that arc.

The reason why the ending is amazing is because of the development of these characters - you're invested in each and everyone.
