The movie shows him being born through a volcanic eruption during the animated cave painting segment at the beginning. He probably fed off volcanic emissions and forest fires.

Ultimately once he fed off enough destruction he seemed more than capable of causing it on his own. I guess the point the movie was making is that humans would have made it incredibly easy for him to reach full strength since they already polluted shit.

Also, since abbos basically burned down the rainforests of Australia when they first came they're probably the main reason he got so powerful, but the film completely ignores that.
