Moana was fucking trash, but that had very little to do with the setting/race of it's characters.

The issue was that it had a half baked script with no likeable characters and an uninteresting paint by numbers plot, and tried to sell it self solely on it's soulless and bland music numbers written by a flavor of the month broadway hack. And also on the fact they had the Rock in it.

Dad was a victim of the rewrites.

Based on what you can tell from the scrapped songs and changed lyrics the father was originally much more supportive. Seems like his role was diminished in favour of the granny being the main source of inspiration. Maui was also worshiped rather than seen as the selfish idiot who ended the world .
