What Hitler SHOULD and his advisors would have told him in an ideal situation was surround the BEF on Normandy, prevent their escape (which was already attempted by ariel bombing) hold them to ransom for a non-agression pact, make the British Merchant and Royal navies stop convoys the the USA and Russia, with no RN and British Commonwealth merchant navy the war was as good as won for Germany.

Sure The British Gov could have refused, but the public oppinion back home would have been chaotic with nearly half a million men held to ransom, UK now has public revolt on their hands.

The German Air Force had said they would take out the guys on the beach and hit any Royal Navy vessels that are close to shore. They obviously were not effective.
