If you're new to horror and want to get into the genre start off with:

The Thing (1982)
Halloween (1978)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Psycho (1960)
Alien
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Day of the Dead (1985)
The Exorcist
Poltergeist (1982)
Hellraiser
The Shining
The Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
An American Werewolf in London
The Howling
Gremlins
Carrie (1976)
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen (1976)
The Fog (1980)
Black Christmas (1974)
The Fly (1986)
Fright Night (1985)
Creepshow

I think that covers all of the biggest English language essentials of the 60s-80s. There are countless great horror films that aren't on my list but the list is for horror novices who want to start off with some of the classics.
>>
>>84703664
It's equal to half his list and I was able to see past the weaknesses since it was nice take.
>>
>>84704262
>The Thing (1982)
>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
>Alien
>The Exorcist
>Poltergeist (1982)
>Hellraiser
>The Shining
>The Evil Dead
>Evil Dead 2
>Gremlins
>Carrie (1976)
>Rosemary's Baby
>The Omen (1976)
>The Fly (1986)
>Fright Night (1985)

I've seen these! Did I do okay??
>>
>>84702193
Ravenous Isnt horror but its good anyway so watch that.
I also recommend Cure (1997), its one of my personal favourites.
>>
>>84702193
>Manhunter
Great film but it isn't really horror, it's a thriller.
>A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A masterpiece, go watch it ASAP.
>They Live
It's a 1950s style cheesy sci-fi horror film that's a commentary on our society. It's great but don't go into it expecting to be spooked by creepy monsters.
>Day of the Dead (1985)
One of George A. Romero's best, a must watch if you like zombies.
>Braindead
My favorite Peter Jackson film, it's a horror comedy masterpiece. Watch it ASAP.
>Twik Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Very good film but DON'T WATCH IT UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN THE FIRST TWO SEASONS OF TWIN PEAKS! Fire Walk With Me has massive spoilers.
>The Dead Zone
One of David Cronenberg's most underrated horror films.
>Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Are you talking about the 1950s version or the 1970s version? Anyway, both are great.
>>
>>84704418
You did good. Now check out the rest of that list.
>>
>>84704556
I forgot Halloween I've seen that, too!
>>
>>84702193
>>84704418
Always remember to pay attention to directors. For instance, John Carpenter and David Cronenberg both made tons of great horror films.
>>
>>84704595
That's good, senpai. I forgot to mention you should watch the original Friday the 13th. It's schlock that blatantly rips off Halloween and A Bay of Blood but it's very entertaining and was massively influential. It popularized having tons of gratuitous violence and sex in slashers.

>Escape From LA (btw I like this more than NY kek. Saw it first and always loved it, I don't like that people hate it)
>Videodrome (dat redhead Blondie)
>The Fly

>60s-80s

Left off Rosemary's Baby? Unforgivable

Nigga you need to start in the 20s with horror. Nosferatu. Phantom of the Opera. Then Dracula, Frankenstein, Freaks, The Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
>>

Nvm about Rosemary. I can't read.

Essential Carpenterkino that you haven't already seen:

>horror
They Live
The Fog
Prince of Darkness
In the Mouth of Madness
>non-horror
Assault on Precinct 13
Big Trouble in Little China
Starman
Dark Star

Essential Cronenbergkino that you haven't already seen:

>non-horror
Dead Ringers
Spider
Eastern Promises

>>
>>84705531
Was The Fog really kino though?
80% of it felt like watching Scooby-doo, honestly.
>>
>>84704262
Just remembered Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Peeping Tom. Those are essential 60s horror.
>>84705084
There's some really great 20s-40s horror but I usually recommend stuff from the 60s-80s since a lot of people don't like really old movies.
>>
>>84705631
It isn't perfect but it's one of my favorite Carpenter horror films. I think it does a perfect job of building atmosphere.
>>
>>84702193
Nice list. a few of these i havent seen and they look interesting, thx.
>>
>>84704262
Your list is boring, kys.
>>
>>84705989
It's a list for horror novices, you retard.
>>
>>84705989
So what would you recommend?
>>
>>84705155
There aren't. The HPL adaptations that are good movies have jack shit to do with the source material. And the bad ones usually do to.
Turns out it's hard to make movies out of stories that are written as letter exchanges or journal entries.
>>
>>84705631
Re-watched it recently and you can tell it's padded and was probably rushed into production without having much more to go on than "spooky fog". The fog scenes are pretty cool, but it's probably the weakest link on his killer 70s/80s streak.
>>
>>84703704

I didn't really care much for lake mungo, but that one scene had me quivering with fear.
>>
>>84705155
Re-Animator
From Beyond
In the Mouth of Madness
>>
>>84702265
>>84703664
Hush was pretty good. Not a 10/10 masterpiece but I would say it's one of the best slashers of the last 15 years.
>>
man i fucking REALLY wanna watch It Comes at Night. WHen will it be on torrent sites
>>
>>84705453
It actually runs beautiful as long as you don't summon Invaders. The game is absolutely kino too the amount of detail in every area rivals the most pretentious director
>>
>>84708547
It's a great but don't go into it expecting a fast-paced zombie flick. It's a slow-paced film about paranoia. We never see any zombies except in dream sequences.

The only thing insane about society was their shitty explination that implies they developed their shapeshifting powers through selective breeding.

Otherwise they were just parasitic shapeshifters.

xD
>>
>>84709092

I don't really care. It's a bunch of weird fat politicians fusing together and fucking. It's weird and I love it.

Videodrome was weird but it didn't quite scratch that itch for it.
>>
>>84707364
Only In The Mouth Of Madness is somewhat Lovecraftian, and it totally drops the ball by showing the creatures in the hallway.

>>
>>84709092

A group of people have to play and win a game of death until only one of them remains?

The scariest movie I've ever seen in my life is Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs. of course I was 10 years old and it was the first scary movie I ever saw, but that was the peak for me. Nothing else comes close.
