Welcome to /who/, the Doctor Who General!

LAST GENERAL: >>84688503

My name is Nardole Who. When I was seven I had an imaginary friend. Last night was the night before my friend's wedding. My imaginary friend came back.

>Bill decides to only save 12 and leaves Nardole and the children for dead

There was something offputting about the end of the finale, as fantastic as it was. If the episode ended right when Bill left the TARDIS, I would have been convinced that the entire episode was all in her imagination, due to the combination of her brain being eaten away by the programming and the complete denial of her conversion.

He's spoken before about Doctor Who and pretty much said he doesn't feel any great need to go full-on intense Black Mirror about it, IIRC. Moff asked him to write an ep a while back, and he was stoked at the idea but too busy at the time.

He'd have to restructure his current projects to such a degree I don't think he'd ever take the job, even though he'd be great at it and likely enjoy it, but it's nice to imagine.
>>
>>84698934
I'm still hovering around some headcanon that 12 got back in the TARDIS through some non-Heather means, and the whole Heather thing was a dying hallucination (or legit spiritual experience? you decide!) of Bill's.
>>
>>84698887
>Howard Overman
Misfits became lame once they started replacing characters, so Overman can't handle a show with a rotating cast. Otherwise, our best case scenario would be Merlin... Eh.

Luther kept swinging from really good to yet another lame cop drama. Maybe he could do well, but his Who episodes don't speak highly of him.

I left around Pyramid I think, because too many spoilers were coming out and I wanted to keep some surprises for myself. So I just stayed off here and a certain other Doctor Who discussion forum for a few weeks, and got to enjoy a few surprises I wouldn't have otherwise.

:) Hope you enjoyed the finale

I am thinking about writing a story where The Doctor suddenly has a mysterious regeneration and he regenerates back into a previous incarnation, mostly likely Matt Smith since he seems like he would want to return, now he has to figure out what caused this spontaneous regeneration so he can get his face back which only leads to him regenerating into a new face and a new incarnation of The Doctor.
>>
>>84699254
>Unless it's like 11's and they bring back a rarely-used cue (Akhaten) out of nowhere
They brought that back because fans went berserk over that song for some reason and loved it. I'd say the equivalent of that song for 12's era is Breaking the Wall.

Chan I liked a lot the finale, I think the Heather driving the Tardis with such a skill killed the moment, it was going quite emotional and deep the scene then she comes as a deus ex pilot machina and ruins everything, but I'm happy that she appeared, I knew it she would save Bill somehow. And Simm's appearance was nothing big, Michelle acted way more better than him, we were excited for him because you know, 10th fans. (8/10) tho!

As one of those fans, it's because I really think that although the episode itself was weak, Akhaten was a fantastic concept and the bit pre-leaf could have been a GOAT finale.

I liked this scene but honesty after Moffat going on and on about some kind of grand plan on how they were going to make it a plot point that Capaldi already appeared in The Fires of Pompeii I was kinda disappointed by it just being this. For the 9th Doctor they used a piece of incidental music played just the scene before in the episode.

For the 10th Doctor it was a mix of his theme and the original score, Vale Decem.

For the 11th Doctor it was The Long Song and a bit of A Sad Man with a Box remixed together.

So for the 12th Doctor I'd expect his theme remixed with Breaking the Wall and perhaps some original compositions mixed in. It will be grand, quite sad, but triumphant like his theme/Breaking the wall.

Because it's a great scene that works both on a metaphorical level for Matt handing the role over to Capadi and telling the audience to accept him, which a number of the are likely finding hard to do, and also from a storytelling perspective makes sense for 11's character given how pro-regeneration he is in his speech and is in his persona to make the effort to make his companion and future self feel welcome despite changes. It's also just a well written and acted scene that fits with the story of Deep Breath and is a novel idea.

I really love the idea of Twelve being reluctant to regenerate not because he's afraid of death or losing his currently personality, but the simple fact that he's sick of changing in general. It's amazing because it has this very dark pseudo-suicidal tone to it (He doesn't want to keep on living) but on top of that an interesting somewhat philosophical question on how tiring it must be to entirely change everything who you are as a person. I also think it's a very meta-Doctor problem, if that makes any sense. It's not a Twelve specific problem like Ten's whining was, it's something that the Doctor as a whole has a problem with which further strengthens Twelve in my mind as the most "Doctor" of all incarnations.
>>

Same. I also love that it wasn't indicated heaps through S10 or anything, it feels jarring in a daring way how it came up in the finale, the way suicidal sort of revelations often do.

He wasn't meant to have this many lives, and changing his whole personality and life so much must be traumatic. Plus the same old things keep happening throughout his lives - friends dying, him becoming alone again, evil always around. He's just so, so tired at this point.

>>84699682
Also on your meta point, I think it even works as a sort of commentary on the way the show isn't as big as it used to be, and how having to endlessly reinvent and innovate the show must be so tiring for Moffat (and the show's writers in general, through the show's history). The show having such a long life is impressive, but living so long means changing so much, and that's hard.

I don't think the Doctor would take a transgender companion regardless of how much that anon supports the idea. I want to say Tennant only because I have a crush on him, but his Doctor would probably leave me in a place where I do not want to be. Twelve and Eleven seems to care more about their companion's safety. It would be fun to travel with Eleven since he seems to have a more chldlike outlook on life and existence, but I think I will have to stand with the Twelfth Doctor. I dunno why I have a hard time picking a favorite Doctor when somebody asks me to pick one since I see all of them as the same person. I guess that could be something he appreciates considering this scene >>84699621. I guess I just see The Doctor and would be happy with any incarnation that knocks on my door as long as they don't leave my face in a concrete slab or try to choke me to death because they think I am some sort of spy. Also, I do not know the Classic Who incarnations too well, it's a little tough for me to focus on the old episodes either because of the outdated effects and my millennial generation or because I might have light ADD.

Is it wrong that my favorite Doctor is The Doctor and not a particular incarnation?

I still rank Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, and David Tennant (I like stage actors, sue me) at the top of incarnations that I liked. I never really much got into Matt Smith for some reason.

The Doctor said to Bill that the Time Lords were an advanced civilization that doesn't fixate itself on the complexities of gender or associated stereotypes unlike humans do. Why the fuck would he be against a transgender companion aside from the fact some humans wouldn't like the story because it damages their little safe space?

I wish I had that gender fluidity image now to accompany this post.

His great-grandson dying in To the Death is so fucked up it almost cycles into hilarity for me, like, he seriously cannot catch a break and the same story features two other companion deaths anyway.

outsourced the only proper cyberman story of his era to tom mcrae, and then brought them back for an episode solely so he could have the daleks slaughter them and show how much better they were, effectively ruining any threat they had. then he made the next doctor and that was just a proper load of trash.
>>
>>84700227
If it's about Doomsday, the thing you have to remember is that the Daleks at that point in their history were able to fight in war with the Time Lords to become the dominant life form in the universe. The Cybus Cybermen were built with technology just barely more advanced than what we have today on Earth. Showing them as equally powerful would have made no sense, it would be like an Aztec warrior being able to beat a tank.

We have the pilot of a spaceship stranded on Earth, we have Cybermat's that seem terrestrial at first, we have an episode about a spaceship never reaching it's destination in Smile, with only the colonists who came first. Then we have an arc about the truth monks which is about consent and bill's sense of identity.

Heather is essentially a final form of Cybermen reaching a stated of accelerated consciousness, through years of existing in a fast-forward area of time, and eventually becomes the pilot of that Spaceship that was intended to look for a similarly inhabitable planet to Mondas (Earth? Or say Mars). The Cybermat possibly a failed experimentation at terraforming earth perhaps too.

Bill 'evolves' into a post-singularity version of humanity, shepherded by a Pilot Cyberman beyond man. It's a surprisingly utopian take on the inevitability of digital dehumanisation.

best alien of all time is undoubtedly the monks.

- they can create pixel-perfect simulations of the entire Earth and all its inhabitants, including a TARDIS and its interior, which is even more impressive considering it runs on a program that can't even attempt to randomly generate numbers
- their spacehip is a pyramid but they have no connection to ancient Egypt, and they deliberately chose to look like rotting corpses despite having knowledge of all human history and therefore the implication that humans would find such an appearance disturbing

- they have tractor beams that can pull planes out of the sky, but the tractor beam only works by teleporting all but one of the humans into the pyramid and replacing them with monks, then teleporting the last pilot a moment later

- they have technology sophisticated enough to hack and alter the clocks of every single device on the planet, but their surveillance feed from a high-tech biochemical facility only shows up on their screen as grainy black-and-white

- they can restore The Doctor's eyesight in a moment from thousands of miles away, but they can't take it away or do anything else remotely that might cripple him and stop him meddling with their plans

- they need a human in a position of power to consent purely in order to brainwash the planet, even though all it entails is broadcasting a fake news telepathic signal from their pyramid HQ

- they can shoot lightning out of their hands and talk in whispery voices and have long fingers and meddle with human history but they're totally not The Silence

- best of all, they got three whole episodes dedicated to them, a quarter of the entire series, so we could get maximum entertainment out of their presence

also the last companion to have an ending with actual consequences. I miss that.
>>
>>84701384
Did Amy and Rory not have any consequences?
>>
>>84701162
>they can restore The Doctor's eyesight in a moment from thousands of miles away, but they can't take it away or do anything else remotely that might cripple him and stop him meddling with their plans

The whole arc about the Doctor's blindness has to be the most retarded thing in the entire series. Are we seriously supposed to believe that there is nowhere in time and space he could have gone after Oxygen to get his eyes fixed? And in Pyramid, why can't he send a picture of the lock to Bill so that she can tell him how many times to turn the wheels?
>>
>>84701392
they got to give a full and happy married life. their only consequence was not being able to go on timey wimey adventures any more, which they were already trying to move away from

The only one who suffered the consequences in Amy and Rory run was Brian.

I still can't believe the Doctor never visited him after murdering his son

Just a reminder that the Monks are going to be the ones to permanently end The Doctor leaving him with no regeneration to save himself.

If this post ends in singles then we will never stop shitting on the monks and their episodes because holy fucking shit how was any of it allowed, how did not a single one of the three writers think to plan out what the monks were actually meant to be before writing the episodes so they didn't just become a random mess of OP and illogical powers with no explanation or justification
