What Andrew Garfield meant was that he wants the attention and popularity from both heterosexual and gay audiences for his rendition as some important gay character. This is an increasing phenomenon as LGBT acceptance increases in the United States.

Here's why it's wrong. Andrew Garfield is a heterosexual man. He is adopting the identity of a gay character for a role in a movie for a paycheck and adoration, without actually experiencing the hardships and adversity faced by gay people. He said that he prepared for the role by "watching every episode of RuPaul's Drag Race". Unfortunately that doesn't encapsulate the whole gay experience and is actually quite condescending.

The term for this behavior is called gay baiting and the worst offender is actually James Franco. He claims that he admires gay characters because he acknowledges the adversity they face, and plays a role without facing that adversity. Nick Jonas played a bisexual character on Scream Queens and posed in his underwear for a queer magazine.

Meanwhile, gay youth are being kicked out of their homes and aspiring gay actors can't perform these roles as they've been coopted by straights with alterior motives.

That's what he meant by that.
