The thing I love about the original is that it's clear long-term survival is a pipe dream by the end of it. There's never going to be a return to normalcy. This one just sacrifices a great set up just to kill them all in some blaze of glory.

I wouldn't say it's a better film as a remake, but it definitely holds its own if you were to consider it purely as a zombie film that just happens to have the same title and same premise. The two are completely different movies in tone and intent, and there is no point in discussing it as a remake, because it's really not a good remake of the classic 80's film in any sense; it misses the point that Romero originally intended with the original Dawn of the Dead. What it is though, is an exciting and surprisingly well made entertaining movie without a single dull moment.
