Hello /tv/, I'm a set design student and next year I will take my degree exam. I want to create a set (and costume) design for a science fiction movie and I want your opinion on what scifi movies are interesting and have potential for a design re-thinking.
I was thinking about choosing Dune or Prometheus. Note that the reviews don't matter, what matters is whether it is challenging for a future set designer or not.
Don't say Mad Max, Blade Runner or The fifth element because they are already taken.

Try and make something original. Sci-Fi is really stale at the moment.

zardoz has a very unimaginative set design (apart from the floating head)
Literally an irish house with pyramids and mirrors

Exactly. That's why it could do with some design re-thinking

Nothing much to work on, honestly.
You can do 100 different sets in the style of Brazil easily, because it has a broad aesthetic basis (neon signs, Metropolis, samurais, brutalism...).
You do a set in the style of Zardoz and it's going to be a mix of hippies and a cheap Dr. Who episode. Hard to make it look good or interesting imho.
