it's not that bad. i saw it in theaters fully expecting it to be awful, but it's surprisingly watchable. if they had spent more time on the script and characters, it could have even been good. it's remarkably close to the tone of the original film, feels sort of like a cross between GitS 1995 and SAC, although the plot is more reminiscent of RoboCop than any GitS property.

if you haven't see the animemes definitely. Its one of the most thorough cyberpunk universes around and definitely worth a watch.
however Ghost in the Shell : Stand alone complex (both seasons) blows this and every other animated movie/series entirely out of the water. It is the only animated series I've ever enjoyed and a strong 9/10
the first season is about a government conspiracy on the level of an unreleased cure for cancer, and the emergence of a hacker so advanced he can shut down other people's cyberbrains in realtime
the second season is about an immigration crisis (lol), a government surveillance agency vastly overstepping its bounds and attempting to manipulate the government (lol), and and an impending working class revolution
GitS:SAC will be better than this movie but you'll enjoy this film as a high budget scifi action flick
the "villain" in the film is actually a combination of the hacker from the first season and the revolutionary leader from the second
