They went further than they would have gone with human characters because the characters were "only" appliances.

But they were anthropomorphized appliances. So, to kids, they BECOME "people" for emotional purposes.

So when you see the Frankenstein's monster appliances being chopped up at the repair shop, or see the cars being cubed at the junkyard, you might as well conjure up the autopsy from Flower of Flesh and Blood or something, because it has the same effect.
