I guess I'm just kinda dumb, but it was bothering me all this time why Bob possessing Coop made him a totally different person, unlike Leland who was still himself 90% of the time. Then I finally realized it's because it's not Coop at all, it's just his evil twin from the Lodge, and he's not as possessed as he is just a vehicle that he's letting Bob use because they're both malicious. Unlike most of Lynch's latter surrealist films, which are kind of meant to be analyzed and interpreted, I'm pretty sure Eraserhead is just meant to be "experienced". Here, you can tell all the weird shit is also related to the main character's psychology, they represent his feelings of anxiety, fear and stress and all that; but I'm pretty sure Lynch didn't put much thought into the meaning of each scene. He didn't want the audience to sit and wonder what it all meant, he just wanted to show them nightmarelike stuff (and it was kind of unique when it came out). As long as you keep that in mind, it's pretty cool to watch.

I have read the Shadow Over Innsmouth.
There is very little thematic overlap, if any.

Lovecraft's overarching theme is fear of racial degeneration and race mixing, the idea that primal forces would make manking regress into a primitive state, which he expresses through the pale blue half-dagonite hybrids in Innsmouth. Another idea is mankind's insignificance when confronted with the cosmic horrors. His characters often go mad, or are unable to cope, an overarching motif is their helplessness when confronted with the unknown.

Lynch's overarching theme is exploring the shady underside of society (Casinos, drug dealing, mass murderers) and trying to find out what lurks beneath. His characters may be temporarily confused and incapacitated, but they are never helpless and they confront the supernatural. Mankind in Lynch's work is a sideshow to the supernatural, but never irrelevant as in Lovecraft's work. Humans in Twin Peaks have a purpose in the grand scheme of things, the spirits contact them. Their stories and decisions matter.

Just because both stories happen in small reclusive towns doesn't mean they are similar. Twin Peaks is a utopian little community united in a love for the simple things (cherry pie, coffee, nature) with a seedy underside (prostitution, drugs, murder). Innsmouth is a backwards, 100% creepy, reclusive community where every outsider feels uncomfortable the minute they step in.

I noticed that the cities (or parts of cities, like Red Hook) in which Lovecraft's stories take places they're usually rotten to the core. And the main character is usually the only sane/civilised/arian person in the bunch.
Also, I think that the Shadow over Innsmouth is one of the few (except Kadath, but is a dream..) in which you feel the presence of a high number of "people", instead of the majority of novels where you can count the players on your hands... Howard was a loner.

Also, we should stop trying to seek resemblances between Lynch and Lovecraft. It's diffierent. Very yrev different.

We see the tiny pond surrounded by sycamore trees and then there's a light beam through which we see Bob's arm push into our world and then the rest of his body materializes in the darkness.
The camera then approaches the pond and the lights come on and we see the red curtains and hear the Lodge music.
