I wasn't commenting on how correct the kid's answer was, the anon I replied to didn't seem to understand what was going on so I tried to explain it to him. The teacher's comment implies they were studying estimation, so the context is that some estimation rules are being tested. The point of doing estimation is that you accept a margin of error so that you don't have to do the exact calculation (various practical purposes). The kid doesn't understand the idea that he actually needs to avoid plunging into direct calculation as the first instinct, when he becomes an adult, that could be a costly mistake, (this should be written clearly in the textbook they were using before the exam, I mean I don't believe the teacher has the balls to test something that uses ideas outside of their textbook/teaching manual or whatever), so, the kid lost the mark. The question, failed to convey the necessity of doing estimation while trying to be tricky, gave the exact answer and probably meant to ask if this exact answer is reasonable to someone who can't do direct subtraction, so that's a bad question. But that is what was going on in the grading.

I can see the reasons for arithmetic being taught this way, whoever originally designed this curriculum wanted young students to internalize the methods that could deal with more general and abstract objects than "just numbers". But I also see that it is a futile attempt:

Firstly, because somewhere along the line, some teacher might misunderstand, or perhaps most teachers don't even see the reason why or aren't actually aware that they are teaching arithmetic according to an analytical - algebraic approach. Doing it right, could lead to parts of first year college analysis and abstract algebra (by American standard) being taught at around early high school (integers - polynomials - rings).

Secondly, let's be honest here, it's not like most of these kids are going to study any real math after high school.
