It's the perfect confluence of stereotypical nerdy bullshit, it's the average /v/ poster, relatively new to the site, who goes to all the big boards on the site and shits them all up equally with his narrow knowledge and experience with various artistic mediums. He knows mainstream video games, he knows mainstream anime, he knows mainstream cartoons (especially those from the 90s and early 00s), and he knows only the biggest comic book characters. And he feels marginalized by society because of how much of a shut in he is, so he'll have the most shallow /pol/ opinions and tastes. One, I never said it was irrelevant to me. I'm pretty passionate about this, both because I love the source material + I want the movie to be a good adaptation, and because I'm not racist.
Two, I haven't spent a lot of time defending it. I just hopped onto this thread, which means that there are several other people who agree that the L casting decision is the least of this film's problems and have been arguing against you.
I honestly am baffled why so many people on this site are so upset that L was cast with a black person. I guess when it comes down to it, it really does stem from the racist, bigoted roots many people on this site come from.

Because what difference does it make? You're essentially saying that any race works for the role, which isn't inaccurate. I would have been happy if he was hispanic, or Asian. Native American doesn't work as well due to the fact that they aren't necessarily seen as foreign and because they originate from the US itself. L is an international detective. This is why black or white or Asian or Hispanic works.

I'm not arguing that black was the best race decision. I'm arguing that it's a fair choice, and still works with the character. So far no one has disproved that except for racist and shallow remarks.

Lights race doesn't matter. He works better as a preppy, attractive, and charismatic person but what matters most is his God complex. As long as he's outwardly likable he works (which is argue the Netflix series fucked up, as their Light seems like a loser).

L's race matters because he's supposed to look like a shut-in, pale faced creep. Now these traits could be conveyed by a good writer or goof actor without the use of costume/makeup, but with the material they're working with I have my doubts. That's why I thinking casting L as black was a really bad decision.

It's also very obviously a diversity hire which to a normal viewer will probably be more of a distraction. Its probably very likely that they passed on a better actor of a different race just because he wasn't black.

Are they actively trying to ruin the franchise? What the fuck are they thinking? Aside from L being a nigger that completely ruins my suspension of disbelief since niggers aren't usually above 90 IQ, he doesn't even act like L at all. The only part that is somewhat similiar to L is the squatting, but that ironic because the squatting looks ridiculous in live action.

And Light... where do we go from here? His character seems to be even worse than L. He is ugly, uncharismatic, emotional (wtf?), romantic (??????????), bullied (what?). Light is quite literally none of these things. He is apathetic, highly confident, pretty much the perfect student, depressed, sociopathic (he doesn't care about anyone else but him.), beautiful, cunning and manipulative. None of these things are present in the movie version. He looks like a complete wimp
