this movie gets brought up in every Russian movie thread but it's not just a meme. its an accurate depiction of the Russian mafia in the 90s and was made in the 90s with almost no budget and was great

Shame about the sequel though.
The first one had sort of moral at the end with Danila got the money, but lost his brother and his woman in the process. The second one has an absolute happy ending, he does everything he set out to do, and nothing of value is lost in the process and he gets away completely scot-free. It's still worth watching, i'd say, but personally I found it lacking. It's one of those "more of what people liked in the first one, but without any soul"

I also think it was interesting that his name was Danila. according to my professor, Danila means "god will judge me" which speaks a lot to the character and how in his eyes he was a good guy
