Dude, get the fuck out. 12 years is objectively a boring movie with boring plot, boring pacing and average acting. Moonlight is a pretentious joke.

>>
>>84618880
Moonlight wasn't just praised for having black people in it though. It was also praised for its performances, use of color, cinematography, and the fact that its themes are universal.

The irony of people whining that it's about muh black people is that THEY'RE the ones obsessing over race, while everyone else sees a movie about a kid struggling to grow up and find his place in the world as an adult. Even though he's raised in extraordinary circumstances he still deals with things that everyone is familiar with, like peer pressure, finding love, and being a loner. By the end of the movie it's made abundantly clear that physical appearance doesn't matter- Chiron is this big, bulky macho man but it's all a facade to hide the fact that he's still shy and sensitive and a product of the environment he was raised in, Juan obviously being his only father figure.. You can tell just by the expression on his face when he meets Kevin that he's still the same person, deep down. The people who only talk about the fact that it has a black guy in it completely missed the point of the movie, and it wasn't even a deep or complicated one either.
>>
>>84619224
There's nothing, literally nothing pretentious about Moonlight. It tells the story of a guy who doesn't fit in the environment he grew up and happens to be homosexual, that's all there is to it. There are blockbusters with much bigger pretentions on their stortylines and presentation.

You have to be a brainlet to consider a simple coming of age movie to be 'pretentious' on any level.

there were 2 black actors that won oscars this year, the same as 10 years ago when forest whittaker and jennifer hudson won.

sure of course all of the niggers bitching and whining about #OscarsSoWhite was the reason why 2 of them won this year and moonlight won best picture but it's not like it's unprecedented or anything. you guys are all just triggered by black people for some reason and spend hours a day complaining about having to see them in movies and tv.

It was cheap and easy Oscarbait thanks to people like yourself. it's literally the exact same film every time with no variation of theme or atmosphere. It's a very straightforward representation. I'll admit it was handled more elegantly than say, Selma was, but it's really nothing special. Overly-dramatic, too. My God. Life is not like that. It's cheap when they do it that way.

Not a single thing you wrote is in any way a valid criticism of a movie. Try making an actual observation based on artistic merit, or lack thereoff.

Who cares if they won Oscars or not? They really didn't deserve it anyway. My point about Selma was it's a historical drama handled waaaay too melodramatically and also avoids any kind of challenging thought on the subject matter. It's basically just MLK = Good, Bad guys = bad. It's not even a step above Disney shit. 12 Years a Slave is the same except for "adults". Go and watch The Toxic Avenger of Nightmare on Elm Street if you want truly good and well-made, unique films. Seriously.

Which Slavery movies deserved Oscars? Maybe Django Unchained. I'll give you 12 Years a Slave because, while I thought it was melodramatic, I still think it's a decent film with some neat camera tricks.

What else?

>>84620192
I actually agree with you. I thought he was great. he looks like the devil when he's forcing the slaves to dance. I just feel like the film is similar to Schindler's List in the way it rubs your face in the "history" and presents things in, pardon the pun, black and white terms almost entirely.

>>84620272

>he looks like the devil
No, he looks like a man with the power over other human beings, due to slavery. People show their true face when they have power over other human beings.

>I just feel like the film is similar to Schindler's List in the way it rubs your face in the "history" and presents things in, pardon the pun, black and white terms almost entirely.

Yeah yeah, its all some gigantic conspiracy to end the white race yada yada.

I think Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave deserved their Oscars much more than films like Argo or Crash.
>>
>>84620037
Chicago is a decent musical but how it won the oscar I really don't know. Probably the most prime example of 'guess the academy just loves musicals', it's really not all that special.
Crash is garbage unsubtle melodrama.
The Artist is a nice exercise in recreating the silent style but ultimately very forgettable, some good performances in it but should've never won the best picture.
Moonlight is pretty good, though more of in the tier of 'good indie movie that you'd recommend to people', not best picture tier.
>>

>>
>>84620402
I'm not saying the "history" didn't happen. That's not what I meant by using quotation marks. I just mean I doubt it happened the way these films present it. Wouldn't it be great if we were given more human moments rather than just all doom and gloom the whole time? Look at Life is Beautiful, for example, or some of Paul Thomas Anderson and Robert Altman films which utilize a full emotional spectrum. That's all I'm asking for. Frankly, I don't have the patience for films which make you feel guilty and depressed the ENTIRE time you're watching them. It's simply manipulative and unrealistic, no matter how you look at it.

>>84620488
Again, I'll agree with you.

I personally see the oscars as nothing more than Hollywood politics and money/job oppurtinites for people with the correct group of friends. It's why people like PTA are rarely ever noticed in these awards shows.

Are you saying that a handful of house slaves of a wealthy southern family are representative of the slaves picking cotton, or even working in mines?

Seems like youre just trying to internalize the notion that slaves didnt suffer at the hands of their white masters at all. In fact it really sounds like you still cannot accept the fact that slavery is a destructive force of pain and lifelong suffering.

Furthermore you probably should know that the slavery in the Mediterranean in the age of the Roman Empire was so ruthless and universal, that it enabled the most popular ideology in the history of the world to spread like a wild fire, because it promised a life after this one and that all men were created and were equally loved by "him".

Food for thought.

100% this.

I'm shocked it even made it to theaters because it has the definition of made-for-TV production.
>>
>>84620703
That's a TV show, not a film.
>>
>>84620605
All films are manipulative and unrealistic. Not trying to sound condescending, but some of us are older than most and we remember the days before "hyper-realism", when suddenly everything had to be "realistic".

Movies arent real life. As much as we all wish that "Master and Commander" was really how it looked like on a ship in the early 19th century, we must accept that its just an interpretation.

As you correctly state, some films with a historical background can easily fall prey to the personal views of the director/producer, but that is secondary to the fact that history is in books, not on film.

>>
>>84620699
If there is a place for doom and gloom it's a slavery (or holocaust) film, sure. But don't try and tell me there weren't human moments there as well. I have no doubt that at its worst it was representative of what happened in the films. I've seen enough gore shit on here to know that, and I'm a sheltered North American kid. I'm just saying, given the modern political climate and the "point" being hammered in while also being obviously put in context with what's happening today, it got to be a bit much. Maybe that's just my privilege speaking, I don't know.
>>
>>84620830

Ben Affleck is the single greatest actor/director/producer in the last 60 years of film. His non-stop stream of smart and emotionally provocative films prove this. The Town? Classic. Argo? Classic. This man oozes genius out the ass and leaves the steaming pile for consumption by hacks like Paul Anderson and Scorsese. Actors look to him for whatever they need. He's always the first on casting lists for any and all parts. You want a snarky business man? Who else but Affleck. A femme fatale who will do whatever it takes to get the mission done? Affleck. A prominent civil rights leader? Affleck. He passes on a lot of these because he knows what he wants. That's what makes him alpha. He knows exactly where to go and what to do. Damon just rides his coattails. Long live Boston. Long live Affleck.

Also this. We're all growing tired of the bitching and if you really hate it here so much you should go back to Africa. Life isn't easy for anyone, okay? It's not all my fault your life sucks. In fact, at this point, unless you were born in a ghetto, I'd say it's almost 100 percent your own fault. Take some fucking responsibility. Either that or we're all victims of circumstance and in that case whining is pretty much worthless, as well. Tell me a single flaw in the execution of any filmmaking element in NCFOM, just one thing that you thing was done wrong/badly. I'll wait.

t. butthurt superhero movie fan.

There's no other reason to claim Birdman is worse than forgettable, unremarkable Oscar bait trash like Crash.
>>
I like Boyle's filmmaking and the music, but I couldn't get past how contrived the story is.

What was good about it? Shitty feel good film about a kid winning Millionaire? Worst idea for a film, well executed but that doesn't make it good.

Somebody hates movies.

I think your /pol/ brain is preventing you from actually seeing what is a good movie. 12 years was exceptional. Michael Fassbender was pretty fucking good in that movie.
