That scene was complete kino, old horror movies end with police light letting you know it's over and the remaining characters are going to be alright. Here he is still in danger until his bro comes out of the car.

I mean that is probably true but to what end? I think it would have been far more chilling if our expectation had come to fruition. Its inevitability would have made for a far darker ending with a stronger impact. I think the ending they took was mostly a choice based on what would be most palatable to a mainstream audience. The far more depressing ending likely wouldn't have gone over as well.
