2. Basically stay and wait until Robert came back from his hunting trip, at which point Ned would tell Robert the truth about the incest and paternity of his "kids". At which point, Joffrey, his siblings, and Cersei would all be murdered and Robert would still declare war on the Lannisters and wipe them out.

Ned would not fucking budge one inch from his position. He was going to make sure Stannis was made King no matter what; which in turn is why he lost Renley's support (Renley wanted Ned to install him as King) and why he turned down Littlefinger's offer to gangpress Cersei to let Ned be regent. Which in turn is why Littlefinger betrayed Ned, since NO ONE wanted Stannis and with Robert dead and Renley playing his own power play, keeping Joffrey on the throne made more sense.

Watching the marathon, one thing that bugs the hell out of me is Jamie's entire arc.

I know the showrunners are huge Cersei apologists. But would it have killed the show to play up the fact that Jamie is a worthless NEET type, coasting on his looks and having checked out on doing anything with his life after the Seven Kingdoms branded him history's greatest monster?

It would have made the Brienne roadtrip work even better if they had Jamie having to prove his worth and expose how pathetic he is and how his rep is basically his daddy's name and wealth plus everyone simply THINKING he was a great swordsman only due to idiots thinking handsome=talented. Jamie as a NEET was a retcon the fat man came up with when he had to flesh out Jamie's character in the third book (the first that had Jamie as a POV character).

Jamie started out as a cliched "handsome dude/knight who is secretly a monstrous degenerate who fucks his sister and who does horrible things and gets away with it because no one ever things a handsome man can be evil" character.

Also to call Jamie a NEET is not exactly true: being a knight is a huge thing in medieval culture. The thing that made Tywin consider Jamie a glorified NEET is that he became a bodyguard for the king. While the highest and most prestigious position a knight could hold, it basically had the drawback that you effectively became a priest. You had to renounce all titles and estates and inheritance and live a life of chastity with no wife or children.

Had Tyrion not been a dwarf, it would not be much of a problem but Jamie was the only non-dwarf son Tywin had.

The irony is that Jamie being turned into a proverbial neuter was Cersei's brainfart: Jamie was around 17/18 years old and Tywin was already starting to groom Jamie to be his heir and getting him a wife. Cersei of course, could not allow this and came up with the idea of having Jamie volunteer to become a member of the King's Guard. That way he could never marry and continue to fuck Cersei on the side.

Him vetoing a Robert's Rebellion spin-off most likely has to do with the fact that HBO doesn't actually need him in any way, shape, or form since the framework for the story was long written.

It's one of those things that the book explained much better: the book makes it clear that Roose basically is a bad guy from day one where as the tv show made Roose just another Northern lord.

The books clearly state that the Boltons were the second major power in the North and that Ned and Roose didn't really like each other due to Ned thinking Roose was a sick fuck who liked to skin people alive and had repeatedly threatened Roose if he ever found out that he was still flaying people (something Ned made forbidden by penalty of death).

Also, Roose was a vampire-like figure in the book: pale and into bloodletting/leeches and stuff. Also, explicitly shy about using his own men as cannon fodder, which is something that foreshadows his ultimate betrayal of Robb.

The TV show makes it less that and more Roose an opportunist that turned on Robb the moment the war started going against him.
