Being an incredibly subpar knockoff of Fist of the North Star with vampires was not a good thing.

And as far as Hamon goes, they took the concept to its absolute extreme in Part 2 with Joseph and his insane trap shenanigans. As far as vampires go they took that to its extreme by having legitimate South American gods as the antagonists. Hamon was creatively done because Joseph was too much of a genius.

I can't believe that that this is Vegan Gains's favourite anime series. I'm so disappointed. One of the greatest YT content creators is a stormin' norman in his anime preferences. To each their own, but damn. I didn't dislike DN until after the first twenty-six or so episodes, but it became terrible then. Only a few likeable scenes after L leaves the stage. The atmosphere of everything prior was interesting, though. I know you're not reading this, VG, but goddam, you need to expand your anime palet. Almost all of your favourites are from the last decade. You need to see the classics.

Season 1 was interesting because while he is mass murdering and he is also heinously manipulating and throwing away people to accomplish his goals, he is also legitimately trying to change the world for the better and protect people. So he's breaking the law and even doing awful things to the people in his life, but he's also reducing the crime rate of the whole planet like 78%.
So there's a huge grey area when it comes to him and L and whether you really want him to be caught or want him to evade capture.

But in Season 2 that whole dynamic is lost and Light just becomes a generic Disney villain with no motivation other than self-interest.

Also yeah the Season 1 theme sucks, the Season 2 themes are fucking amazing though which is a shame because the show itself became shit.

Honestly the only part of Season 2 I find redeemable IS Teru Mikami who is so ridiculously fucking campy and over the top, especially in the English dub, that I can't help but love him.

Honestly a better story would have been Mikami stealing the Death Note out of his obsession with Kira and going complete overkill with it, and Light having to team up with L's crew to find him and stop him.

Season 2 is on par with Season 4 of Rurouni Kenshin in terms of complete shit anime.

This is the biggest problem with the show. From the get go Light is a psychopath who barely cares about the consequences of his actions and largely does stuff because he's bored. If he actually genuinely cared and willing did what he does because he honestly tried hard to justify it and weight his options than the whole thing would be a fantastic tragedy, but that only happens once he looses the powers of the Death Note.

Goddamn it, I regret seeing that other than Willem Dafoe as Ryuk, THAT was a fantastic choice. I'll miss Brian Drummond's iconic voice, but that's not at all a terrible interpretation of it. Everything else, however, no.

I actually thought that L's actor had some charisma to him, but inverting his skin pigmentation was so unnecessary and even detrimental to L's identity that it almost seems there were political motivations behind it. He looks nothing like him, sounds nothing like him, moves nothing like him, etcetera.

At least Light has the obnoxiously edgy vibe reminiscent of his source material and sounds somewhat similar to his English language voice actor. Overall, looks like another abortion of manga/anime. Only Batou was acceptable in G.I.T.S., I imagine that'll be the case with Ryuk in this.

Cool premise, goes almost completely off the rails at the beginning. It's supposed to be a procedural drama with a supernatural twist, yet every major governing body bends over backwards for some weirdo who apparently "solves cases the world over"? The whole concept of L is fucking stupid and there are better ways to having the character than making him a world famous recluse whom every government bends over for.

The Manga/Anime have a tendency to do this, instead of L being just a smart rookie detective who's Lights foil they need to aggrandize the character to an insane level to "sell to the audience that this guy is a serious threat"
