The writing and plot for the prequels was awful. We didn't need to see Anakin as a kid. Qui gon, as cool as he was, was unnecessary. Instead of the backwater planet of Naboo, and instead of Jedi master Qui Gon and his apprentice Obi Wan, how about Jedi master Obi Wan with his apprentice Anakin Skywalker investigating trouble on Alderaan, a core world? In 4 when Tarkin blows Alderaan to smithereens, we should watch that scene with new eyes. The prequels failed to inform on the original trilogy like it should have.

So yes. It was the writing. There's no reason that Christensen couldn't have had a brief career as a teen heartthrob like so many others. Any actor would have failed to live up to Darth Vader hype.

Well from what I remember in the books, Alderaan turned out to be a very boring planet anyway. It's more interesting to see all these people who were off planet having to deal with their homeworld being destroyed.

Probably could've gotten away with someone like Cillian Murphy, circa 2003, 2004 he's a great actor that can play both villian and hero well, still would've looked early 20s then if not passable as a teen.
