Blade Runner has always been a mediocre story with flat, underwritten, underperformed characters but with absolutely stunning visuals.

The concept of marrying sci-fi and noir was a good one but it only nailed the sci-fi aspect. Blue Velvet came out 4 years later and is the definitive neo-noir 80's film, all without insane set design and costumes, just a great story with compelling characters.

It's easy to headcannon/interpret an explanation. Deckard was an (opportunistic) experiment like Rachael with implanted memories, and very likely had a normal lifespan given the sequel coming out.

The setup for the experiment had the built in failsafe that the fugitive replicants would die in a short time span anyway.

Would Deckard have had a better and more interesting character arc as a human? Jay and Canadian guy think so but personally I dont because the movie never explains what caused him to fall into his slump.
