i've only watched 6 episodes of the wire so far and i can already say it's one of the best TV shows I've ever watched.

Not better, but try The Shadow Line. It's British, and only got 1 season but it's pretty good.

Also, Quarry is fucking great. again, only 1 season but better than 99% of shit I've ever seen.
